eracode: Is there any way to tell an actual 5.1 prog without putting your ear against one of the surround speakers?

I just realised that there is another way that I could tell whether a surround speaker is working or not - put my tongue across the terminals and no tongue-tingle = no signal. Easy, eh!

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Interesting, my Samsung set showed Dolby Digital just last night  on TV2  - and only during the movie.

All other times it's shown AC3 for TV1 & TV2.. so some switch must've been flicked briefly then.

At least TV One have got it spot on with their RWC HD 5.1 coverage.
I could even hear a well mixed surround music track quite a few times during the opening ceremony.

The picture quality doesn't seem as crisp as say the Beijing Olympics, or the Football World Cup, but still pretty good.

Sadly, TV2 is still lacking audio wise.

Aye, picture is pretty good here.

Only thing missing is any HD 5.1 channel bug like TV3 and incorrect EPG listing that didn't mention HD or 5.1.

I watched bits of the TV1 RWC coverage and it had 3 audio tracks, 2 AAC and one DD. Now it might possibly be my system but I heard nothing from the rear channels for the game.  This is from a realtime recording I was making on a PC and then playing it back from a Popcorn Hour in semi-real time.

And out of interest I was also using PlayTV on the PS3 and could not work out how to select one of the 3 audio tracks? Mine seemed to default to one of the AAC tracks.

I think with PlayTV you have to set an overall audio format as the default audio format for all channels.
It's in the main options somewhere.

It definitely had 5 discrete audio channels during the game.
Very noticeable crowd noise in the rear channels, and separated commentary on the centre channel.

In Playtv my only audio choices were stereo or multichannel. There were no specific Codec choices.

As for DD 5.1 I will have to check my recording again

It was interesting comparing audio and picture quality between TV1 and TV3 (the delayed replay). I'd recorded TV1 and was comparing to the TV3 broadcast on the fly. TV3 a clear winner for both picture and sound.

TVNZ seem to think edge enhancement is a good thing, it just makes the picture grainy. TV3's audio had more bass and treble, much clearer and punchier. TV1 was dull by comparison.

But that's the basic differences between the channels anyway, not just the rugby coverage.

I didn't hear anything crowd effects during the game from my TiVo on the sound speakers on the TVNZ feed. Was like listening to stereo but my HT amp said say DD5.1..

Both on Sky sports 1 and TV1 it was in full 5.1 with fantastic sound, on all 5 channels, tested on MySky HDi and PlayTV, I would agree the sound and picture on TV3 was better

How did Sky compare picture and sound wise to the others?

I thought Sky was good both sound and pic...to be honest it was slightly better than TV1...it looked like TV1 video was slightly compressed

I think 'Multichannel' is the one to go for to enable DD5.1. Although it does seem that PlayTV is somewhat lacking in fine tuning, especially when it comes to audio.

fatjulio: [snip] TV3 a clear winner for both picture and sound.

Really? I thought the TV One picture quality was vastly superior to the delayed TV3 coverage. Audio quality was about the same.

Maybe TVNZ haven't quite got the AC3 audio flags set right and some systems aren't playing the audio as intended. I definitely had very distinct, discrete, and separated crowd noises and opening ceremony music coming from the rear surrounds.
