Ok, I got confused as two different but similar types of questions. I would however suggest to both that if they are currently using the jet servers in any form for their DNS hosting, and they aren't getting support at all from them, to alter their nameservers from their server to a new provider. That new provider maybe their existing domain provider or a new webhost. That then safely removes them from the equation.

If yours is the domain name I am thinking of, there is no way for you to change the nameservers without Jethost doing it for you. Interestingly - there is an update on this site (http://www.jethost.com ) - which does nothing more than provide a landing page to direct people between the three 'branches' of Jethost. That update does say normal service should resume this week - so perhaps you may have some hope.

My advice would be to submit an urgent request to that alternate email on the page - support@jethost.ca - and see what they can do. As a tip - ask for a forthright response regarding how much access they have to the server on which your website is hosted - because that's a question you need to have answered :)

Buda: Thanks, I've emailed Discount Domains with that advice. Hopefully their support can sort it.

To qualify my last post - you need Jethost to assist if you want to change your MX record only, as that needs to be changed in the DNS zone on the server. Discount Domains can only change the ENTIRE nameservers for you (i.e. point them somewhere else). Seeing as your website forwards to another location, that may not be a bad option - you would only need to duplicate your email forwarding from another location!

A lot of the JetHost ones seem to be registered with DomainAgent under a JetHost reseller account. As long as you are the registrant contact for the domain name, all you have to do is request the UDAI from the current registrar and move it to a new registrar (or open a new account with the current registrar under your own name) - then you can change the DNS. You can even point the A record back the JetHost server if your site is working (and you are feeling really brave) and point the MX record back to the registrar so you can get your mail going again.

If in doubt, do a WHOIS on the name to see who the registrar is and contact to them to help - a long as you are the registrant, you should have no problems. We've had a few though where JetHost has registered the domain name for the client and stuck their own details as the registrant - THAT is a potential problem. But really, as long as you are the registrant contact and have access to the registrant contact email, you shouldn't have any problem.

Other than that, you DON'T even have to move it to eziWeb - lest we get accused of "soliciting clients"!! But we are happy to help where we can if people ask

Do a google search on 'Whois NZ', and then enter your domain into the whois lookup form to find out the 'registrar'. That will tell you exactly who to contact to get the UDAI. If you purchased the domain through Jethost, who appears to be a reseller for 'Domain Agent', who is infact Webdrive, when you should contact Webdrive directly. They will then email the 'Registrant' on record the UDAI, to allow you to change registrars. The thing to lookout for, is if the host has either registered the domain under their own name, or has entered their email address is the 'registrants' . You can however check this in the 'registrants' details in the whois lookup. If that happens to be the case I would contact the registrar to find out what you can do.

If you are the registrant contact, the domain belongs to you - it doesn't matter who the registrar is. You just have to email the registrar and request the UDAI, then you can shift it wherever you want and edit the DNS records. I don't think they can legally withold it from you (at least for NZ domain names) but you might want to check with the DNC on that.

Since JetHost isn't a registrar (as far as I know) and just a reseller to various actual registrars you should be able to request the UDAI directly off them (which is just as well!)

Unfortunately this has happened to some people - you then have to provide fairly clear proof that you are the actual owner of the domain which can become a real pain. If the registrar still won't release it to you (and to be fair, they have to be extremely careful) you need to go to the Domain Name Commission in Wellington to sort it out which can be a lengthy and reasonable expensive process

The registrar must supply you the UDAI, if you are the registered, legal owner.

I have had a registrar who wouldn't release the UDAI of a customer's domain to them, as it was registered through a reseller. I told them as the registrar they must give the customer their UDAI as it's required by the Domain Name Commission (DNC), under one of their policies:

3.6 A releasing registrar is not able to delay the transfer, nor refuse to supply the UDAI so the transfer cannot occur

We eventually got the UDAI when I threatened to haul them before the DNC.

I thought the domain name commissioners service was free. Or was there actually an ownership dispute, where they had to hire lawyers.

Unfortunately there are quite a few web designers (mainly novices) who register their clients domains under their own name, and have all the email addresses set to their own. It is a real pain when that happens, and the designer disappears. I however don't think the host in question has done this, so it should be a simple process to get the udai

I have been there before to, with a registrar who was non contactable by email or phone, and couldn't get the UDAI. I had to contact the DNC to get it sorted. Ultimately the registrar, not the reseller is responsible for providing the udai.

For most things I think it is, if there is a dispute and it has to go to arbitration I think there is an upfront fee of $1800 you pay to the referee but that's probably not an issue in these cases we're discussing

What I would do is:
- ping your domain name to see what IP address it currently resolves to (probably 202.124.116.194)
- contact Discount Domains (or whatever registrar you use) and request the UDAI
- open a new domain account with a registrar and transfer the domain across with the UDAI
- Leave the name servers set to the new registrar so you can set up your mail accounts
- set up a custom A record for the website and point it to the IP address from the first step.

Really though, if you have a backup or can still access your CPanel, I'd be moving the whole thing to a new provider while you can (and no, that DOESN'T have to be eziWeb)

One thing I don't understand though and you might be able to explain then...

Some sites are still running (and not in that IP address), and I have received reports of Joomla administration access still being allowed - but joompack backups can't be done because permissions have been changed so no R/W access to some folders.

I also received information that FTP access have been disabled and someone claiming to be from eziweb is asking for a $95 to access the files if the owner wants to transfer to another hosting provider.

What's going on there?
