Just use a reputable company run by reputable people. E.g. Sitehost or webdrive? Yes its more expensive but you get what you pay for

Web Slice seem to be pretty good and they will move your sites at no cost, so that's a bonus!

I think it's reasonable to assume that cheap probably isn't going to equate to greatest. However, cheap is a mile off: shoddy, incompetent, evasive and, dare I say, fraudulent.
Yep, I went "cheap" but I did expect a service.

Also, the Toblerone server is now offline, unable to download customers websites...

But the company in question is 247 Hosting NZ.

Their website says at the bottom KLiB Technologies Group Limited which hasn't been struck off the register.

I think Webslice is OK. They host in that basement datacentre in Queen street. I remember talking to the guy years ago when he was setting it up... seemed pretty honest.

Also I see another company that has Caleb Finlay as director (C&E Finlay Ltd) was struck off from 2011 until only a few weeks ago (7th May 2014) when it was granted a 'notice of restoration' from the companies office... maybe an attempt to re-invent themselves or divert creditors???..

I also notice taht apart from the websites being very similar the terms of service on both hostbee and 24/7 sites are exactly the same.... what are the chances..

In fairness, it looks like a pretty standard whmcs/cpanel deployment/template you see on a TON of other hosting companies. I'm sure you can hire someone to build one for next to nothing (if you couldn't do it yourself).

Was only put onto the issue with 24/7 Hosting as Voyager/1st Domains sent me an email talking about the issues.

I really must have bad luck. My local theatre company that I manage the website for used to be on Wellington Community Net prior to them having all the server issues and then going offline for large chunks of time.

So then 24/7 Hosting came along with free hosting for charitable companies and so it made perfect sense to jump over to them. Unfortunately now it seems that that has been a bad choice too! And it doesn't help that I can't seem to find any link to take a backup of the site so I guess I'll be FTPing stuff off manually.

Does anyone know of a good web host company that offers free hosting for charitable organisations (preferably NZ based as I believe its important that NZ organisations support NZ wherever possible)?

If it is not a complex site you can use blogger and configure it for the custom domain. The new pages features makes it more than just a straight blog.

Thanks will take a look - currently we use WordPress but as more of a CMS than a pure blog.

As an update it seems that a short while back 24/7 Hosting implement a new "Restore Manager". No hint of how you back things up for this magically Restore Manager but when you try and access it says "Restore Managet[sic] is currently unavailable, Please contact the server administrator." Guess thats a good show of what the current states of affairs is!

Oooooops pays if read properly!! Dont know if they do charity pricing but worth asking.
