r2b2: Was only put onto the issue with 24/7 Hosting as Voyager/1st Domains sent me an email talking about the issues.

I really must have bad luck. My local theatre company that I manage the website for used to be on Wellington Community Net prior to them having all the server issues and then going offline for large chunks of time.

So then 24/7 Hosting came along with free hosting for charitable companies and so it made perfect sense to jump over to them. Unfortunately now it seems that that has been a bad choice too! And it doesn't help that I can't seem to find any link to take a backup of the site so I guess I'll be FTPing stuff off manually.

Does anyone know of a good web host company that offers free hosting for charitable organisations (preferably NZ based as I believe its important that NZ organisations support NZ wherever possible)?

Give WebSlice a go, they will move your sites and cPanel config for you at no charge.

Oooooops pays if read properly!! Dont know if they do charity pricing but worth asking.

Ha not a problem - have flicked them an email to see what they can offer.

Have also contacted HostBee (who assure me that they are definitely not related to 24/7 hosting) and Hoopla Hosting who both seem to be very actively trying to get 24/7s business... So if anyone has anything to say about those two please let me know.

HostBee isn't 24/7 Hosting definitely. HostBee is just simply copying those articles from 24/7 Hosting and forgot to edit some stuff.
Although I have no experience with them, I would rather recommend Hoopla, Webslice or OpenHost. HostBee - from the looks - seems like a plain VPS which is being resell. The guy is doing web design, puts his clients to one VPS and boom, already a hosting provider. Trying to squeeze everything into one VPS. :D

Yeah according to a post I saw on WebSlice's Facebook page looks like HostBee was copying from them too. Guess imitation is the best sort of flattery and all that!

WebSlice seems to be leading the bunch at the moment - they've given a really good offer and the support person I've been emailing with has been very prompt and given me lots of useful info and is even going to do a provisional transfer of data over even before I've confirmed that we wish to sign-up in order to not lose the data when the 24/7 servers finally get repossessed :)

Holy crap, 24/7 are turning into a nightmare!

Tried to get the UDAIs from them for the sites I manage but their console reports "Invalid username or password. Please use your Affordabledomains.co.nz login details"

If you visit Affordable Domains you'll see a message: "Note: As of 24th September 2013 we are no longer accepting new accounts ..."

I've had several emails from Voyager about my sites on 24/7, so I tried replying to them via the address in their email. Response:

Your message cannot be delivered to the following recipients:

Recipient address: services@1stdomains.co.nz

Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address

Diagnostic code: smtp;550 5.1.1 <services@1stdomains.co.nz>: Recipient address rejected:
User unknown in relay recipient table

Will try their 0800 number next ...

I checked out several companies and have decided on Hoopla for now. Brad was very responsive to my enquiries and has guided me through everything. My domain was transferred in less than 2 hours and he is helping retrieve a copy of my website that was built in 247s web builder and transfering it to Joomla for me. Its not quite all flicked over yet but I am hopeful it will all go according to plan. As someone who had no technical knowledge at all this has been really harrowing and I really wish all 247s customers the best of luck. I will be moving to a cms on my desktop in the near future so no one ever has both my domain and website again...

I got that UDAI error page and was told to ring Voyager (as they actually hold the domains for 247, who gave me the udai within minutes...

And sorry - but I totally disagree with "charitable" hosting.

If a charity can't afford the minimal amount that some sites offer they shouldn't be doing it.

Yeah looks like the link they put in for the email address was wrong. The text & reply to address were correct though - service@1stdomains.co.nz

The reason that people offer things for free is to free up the money that would otherwise be used for that thing to be used for the charitable organisation's purpose.

That is true. I was new on the scene then and didnt do a lot of homework - but everything was fine for a year or so. Problems crept in slowly but surely - thankfully I kept everything up to date and transferred in time to avoid too much heartache.

I think he probably has quietly crept out of the country again back to mummy in OZ.....
