As a part of the "Safer Internet Day" Google is giving 2 GB of extra storage to anyone doing a security check of their account.

You can start a security check from: https://security.google.com/settings/security/secureaccount

In total that has gained me 6 GB of extra storage over 3 accounts, spending about 5 minutes doing the walk through. Didn't find anything bad, but did get to prune out some old app passwords that had been hanging around.

Well, that was easy.

Good scheme by google to get people to check up on the status.

But most importantly, being part of Safer Internet Day, did you folks think about your other accounts? Passwords that are being re-used? Accounts that have too many rights/access?

The free 2GB is nice, but did it spark that "Ah!" moment that makes you think about the overall picture?

Very good point indeed, I specially recommend this to whoever is using Facebook and have agreed to give apps within facebook to use your data. Its a good time to get into your FB settings and remove all rights for apps which you dont use now !

One feature of the Google login I would really recommend everyone use is the 2-factor authentication. Google Authenticator (app for iPhone/Android - not sure about WM) can be used get a truly secure login to services like Google account/Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, LastPass, Evernote, Microsoft accounts etc.

Here is a Wiki article with a list of services that support 2-factor authentication with Google Authenticator.

Instead of Google Authenticator I use Authy. The main advantage is that it is 100% compatible and syncs between platforms - Android, iOS, Windows, OS X. So if you lose your phone or get a new one you don't have to reenter every single item.

For a good list of services supporting 2FA check the Two Factor Auth List.

Brilliant, took my storage up to 17GB.

So I am going to ping everyone who has an account on my hosted domain and get them to login and get the free storage.

Many thanks.

Good on them, nice wee bonus and a good opportunity to do something I've been thinking about doing for a while but never got around to it.

It's own protocol. authentication based on phone number and you must authorise new devices.

Thanks, my three family accounts just got a boost each, AND I discovered iOS backup to google drive... IClouds 5GB is paltry compared to Googles 17GB :D

Woot?! So 100GB = 19.99 and 25GB = 24.99 ?!?!

Which service is this?
