So my knowledge of SEO is limited to articles online etc no formal training.

In NZ we still have opportunity to find descriptive domain names with the .NZ tld

Like carwasher.nz

Questions:

Lets say there are two domain names carwasher.nz and carwasher.xyz

When a person who is in New Zealand searches for a carwasher in New Zealand.

(Based only on the name not the construction of the site)

Which one would be highest up the search results?

I would assume it would be the .nz tld??

The .nz TLD will show up higher if using the .nz version of the search engine.

Could one surmise that if it was say someone searching outside of nz for a carwasher that the xyz would rank higher , seems obvious but....

Correct. Google will use "afinity" and try to return more .nz results to google.co.nz and .au results on google.com.au and so on...

Moz has a really good resource on international SEO

Key takeaways: While top level domain (.nz/.uk etc.) are important, Google uses other signals as well. Such as where your site is hosted, incoming and outgoing links for sites in the same country etc.
