Neets: After patiently waiting, Cognition has finally released 1.40 with KG6. ?Have flashed iHi...did you backup to internal memory and did the flashing of cognitit this afternoon. Now to see how it performs.
Flashing is such a breeze these days. ?Setting the phone back up takes mere minutes (if you use the donation version of Titanium Backup). Everything back in order after just a few presses of the button.?

Hi...did you backup to internal memory and the flashing did not wipe data?

nofam: If anyone wants a really good replacement set of earbuds, I'd highly recommend these - very sharp price on firstin.co.nz today:

http://firstin.co.nz/products/sennheiser-cx-500-earbuds-5821/?utm_source=MailingList&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=16th+August+2011

You rock! I stopped looking at daily deal sites a while ago. Time to get a pair for when my current ones give up. :)
I've used CX-300's before and currently have a pair of CX-400's (which have been through the washing machine twice - still work perfectly!). They are great ear buds and at this price are pretty much impossible to beat. Much like nofam, I'd highly recommend these to anyone.

Hi joker97.  No, I only backed up my apps using Titanium Backup, backed up my homescreen (I'm using Go Launcher EX) and that was all.  Just flashed the zip file over the top after having wiped cache, dalvic and performed a factory reset.

Factory resetting will wipe the data, but Titanium Backup has backed up the data of the apps that I'm going to restore.

Once you get Titainum backup installed and restore your apps it's all plain sailing.  The paid for version of TB allows you to restore without having to click "OK" for each of the apps.  So it's really painless, and straight forward.  Once TB has restored Go Launcher EX, then I just restore the homescreen.

No, I didn't backup to an external sd card.
I've never done that.  The only backup I do beyond TB and my launcher is copying my Internal SD to a folder on my PC only when I'm going to do a factory format of my phone. After which I then copy back the Internal SD from the PC to the phone.
I'm giving a little more detail because I'm not clear why you would backup to an external SD. Or maybe it's just my practice not to.

Perhaps others would like to chime in whether they backup to an external sd as part of their flashing routines.

Like Neets, I just backup with TB Pro - the default path for this is /mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup which you could certainly change to your external sdcard.

I used to copy the above directory to my external SD, but I haven't in ages.  Nothing you do in the regular pre-flash/flash process Neets listed above should ever touch your sdcard. . . . .That's assuming you stick with mainstream ROM's like Cognition, and don't go arsing about with uBERLeetz Ning-Nong Rom v99.1r23 etc etc.

My escape plan is always to have a copy of the previous ROM and kernel on the phone, and standing by on my PC incase I need to roll back etc.

I have a similar method. I make a cwm and titanium back-up. Once every couple of weeks I transfer these to my pc. Then if things go horribly wrong I'm covered.

Question re: voice searching on the SGS II.

Does anyone know if Vlingo/Google voice search/SwiftKey uses the same voice recognition when dictating texts/emails?

I’m trying to work out if one is better than another – I seem to find that Vlingo is more accurate than SwiftKey and want to know if that’s me imagining things or if they do maintain different databases or parse things differently.

What are others experiences?

You can get any voice recognition app to actually hear your words correctly?  I've used Vlingo, Google and SwiftKey and they're all absolutely hopeless.  Yet others have said it works. I'd have said it was a gender problem but it can't detect well what my husband says either, and he does have a masculine voice.

Yeah, Vlingo works quite well for me...I also found that when I had the NZ voice installed on my HTC Desire I had things working quite well (Google voice recognition). When I had the language set to US English, I did find that if I spoke in a faux American accent, my words were nearly always picked up and it improved recognition immensely. Of course, there is only so long I could talk like that before my other half had enough! Smile

It’ll be interesting to see Designgear’s spin on this kernel – if he can successfully fuse OC/UV’ing with Hardcore’s adjustments/tweaks, we could be onto a winner!

Battery use (initial - uncalibrated) with the latest Cognition ROM and kernel - no O/C'ing, but U/V'ed as per my sig. . . Not too shabby!
