OVER: It's still the same update through PC companion, just often PC companion has the update live before the OTA method.

It won't void you warranty as it's still an official update method.

^^^^^ That!

When my 1st OTA failed, it told me to use PC Companion. I've done it for every update since. So much quicker too.

Re lollipop:

"Hi <name> we were expecting it soon because we had finished our testing, but late last week Sony asked us to review a new piece of software, so we don't have a new date yet. Hope to have an update soon but normally takes a couple of weeks to test, then a couple more for the manufacturer to finish things off. ^Sam"

Sounds similar to the problem the carrier in Aussie was having - I saw a post about them having delayed their release due to some problem with the firmware.

I spent the morning using flashtool and putting baltic 5.02 on my phone.
The hardest part was the unsigned drivers on 8.1, but once I sussed that, I'm all good :)

(using a Z2 atm)

No, this might be very good news, it seems sony got certified for 5.1 for the spark/AU model friday last week.

If going by the version number on the new firmware it does look like it could be Lollipop 5.1

I would rather wait a few more weeks and go to 5.1 than get 5.0.2 (with its memory leak and other bugs) and having to wait a few more months for 5.1.x

If going by things on the web it would seem that the D6653 and D5833 (NZ/AU/Asia) z3's will be the test for rolling out of 5.1 :)

From what I've read, it's not 5.1, just bug fixes for 5.02.... time will tell.

Well lets hope it is, it's not like sony to jump to a new version number for a bug fix.

Loving your optimism :) I suppose "a new piece of software" can be interpreted as a newer version, rather than a non-broken version of Lollipop.

So have to say I am happy with the update.
Did flash the AU unbranded onto the JB Hifi purchased one (spark branding) so had to set everything up again but very happy so far.

Battery is better and a bit faster, however do miss the close all windows button.
New lock screen is great and smart unlock is also good :)

Just updated my unbranded Sony Australia D5833 Z3 Compact to 23.1.A.0.726 which is 5.0.2.

I'm impressed by the initial visual impressions, can't wait for my Z3 Dual D6633 to get the update!
