Teardown shows no removeable memory cards, so I'm guessing it must be soldered on Samsung memory chips
This slow down issues seems to be luck of the draw? Where did you get it from Kilack? Hopefully people who aren't having the issue won't get it later on :(

Thanks Vin... I expected it to be embedded but the way people suggested it was an SD card......
perhaps it's more a batch issue and some aren't fitted with the higher speed chipset???

Eitherway IF it is a valid issue then it seems that it is a relatively easy fix in the next production run. (Relative to say redesigning your case and antennae arrangement that is....)

I don't really understand this "fix" that they are talking about on modaco as it doesn't seem to make sense to me. They talk about moving the data directory to another partition (/dbdata) them symlinking it which is a 130 meg partition and they claim is faster...

but as far as I know... there is 512 megs of ram in this phone... then either a 8 or 16 gig nand chip.. 2 gigs of that is used as rom.. the rest is mounted as an sdcard /sdcard.....

So.... this 130 meg partition they are talking about that is "Fast" and solves the issue still has to be on the same nand chip... so to me it doesnt really make sense at all but the people that have done it say it definitely speeds it up. The only thing i noted was that the block sizes of the partitions are different which definitely could effect speed..... so who knows, maybe just a case of changing the block sizes of certain partitions :)

people running speed tests definitely get faster speeds to that 130 meg partition.. so it must be the block size hmmmm....

i have a feeling that it could all be solveable though..

My friend's brother works for samsung in thailand, and she reckons he can get these for about $800NZ + postage cost (price to be confirmed). Might also be able to get the pro version too. Would there be any problems getting the thai version of this phone? The other advantage is that he can post them as "gift" or "sample" or put the $ value lower so that we don't get stung by GST. What is the total $NZ cost to get them from clove in the UK (ex/incl GST)? Actually might not even have to pay for postage, because she has a thai friend coming to NZ anyways. This is not for reselling, just thinking of getting 2, one for me, one for her, and possibly get the docking station for the car/home as well.

posting as a gift etc means nothing to customs, they will sting for gifts just the same, it is purely the value they are interested in. If you read the posts going around, the singapore versions of this phone have apparently had very severe problems compared to other versions, no idea about the thai versions..
With samsung its very hard to get information and support....... its all rumours usually..
Getting them from clove is about 1050 probably with courier...?

Customs werent born yesterday, if they didnt charge on gifts then obviously everyone would import everything as gifts, if you dont beleive me call customs on monday and they will tell you gift or no gift makes no difference. false delcarations also carry penalties so be careful.

One thing I don't understand is why Customs doesn't crackdown on packages through EMS. I didn't pay customs for my package but if I went through DHL you can they would have been efficient enough to call me. It's not like the package was improperly marked, it clearly said 385 pounds.

My experience, having worked in the courier business, is that DHL is a very efficient operation. They most likely process all imported freight for duties and GST in-house therefore catching all packages as they arrive. EMS I believe is handled by NZ Post -a less efficient operation. I imagine that this combined with the sheer volume of parcels NZ Post handles that you are more likely to slip through uncharged. Of course your new Galaxy is probably also more likely to arrive smashed to pieces but I guess you can claim insurance...

Companies like dhl and fedex etc are interested in speed.
They let customs know about the goods you are bringing into the country before they have even arrived in the country. When you import something with Fedex you get a call a couple of days before the item has even arrived in the country asking for the gst. They do this so there are no holdups once it is here and can sail through customs quickly etc.

With using regular mail, yes it may get through sometimes because it is missed but others it can be held up by customs etc and then they contact you wanting $$.

On a side note.
A girl that does phone reviews had posted a youtube review of this phone showing the very bad lag and black screens. She was contacted by samsung, samsung sent her a new phone to try with new firmware, she is saying that the new firmware makes a difference. She rarely sees a black screen now and if she does its only for a split second and now gives the phone a 9/10 :)
So that is great news....samsung have said they will release the updated firmware "soon"
hopefully they will keep working at it and get rid of even the rare occasions...

That along with froyo later on.. and this phone will be great :)

Also to note, it affects all phones, whether yours is doing it yet or not it has the potential to...
They all have the same nand chips, it all comes down to the applications you have and the i/o to certain parts of the nand....

Oh yeah I read about that girl from Belgium or something who was contacted about her Youtube video. That's pretty cool that Samsung cared enough to contact her and see what was going on.

So if we can get some firmware updates and Froyo, then life will be great indeed. Hard to believe that so soon after release there's even a MCR rom out.

Well, I'm pretty chuffed with the phone, despite the lags. Impressed that I put in the order with Clove last Mon night, and it turned up on the doorstep Friday morning. I showed it to a neighbour who's an iphone fan, and he was in awe of the screen.

What I have found is that the battery doesn't last very long. A full charge in the morning, and almost flat in the evening. Is this an issue, or is just a settling in period for the battery? How would exploring the phone, downloading and installing applets (wifi) etc drain the battery compared to talking on it?

That's about normal for a smartphone these days, horrid battery life, it's the one thing holding the phonens back, the Galaxy S is about 1 - 1.5 days, Nexus One flat within a day, my wifes i5700 is a bit better round 2.5 days.

Do you have the Power Control widget and Advanced task killer?

I find it you turn everything off, leave on say 50% brightness and everything else off, you can make it last 2 days, with email syncing every 30 minutes(Xtra account) and gmail talk on constantly, plus the weather channel app set only to sync when phone is unlocked.

I just really wish battery manufacturers would catch up to technology, they are holding everything back, cars, electronics, home consumer items :(

Yeah smart phones are a pretty much charge per day thing.
Just have to get used to plugging them in each night.. I even plug it in when im near a pc etc especially if im going to play a game or something that is going to drain the cpu etc...

Yeah they definitely need to find some new energy source for everything :)
