teihoata: Rushed home to dig into it. First Impressions - it's epic, screen seems a lot more washed out than the nexus ones amoled, speakers aren't as bad as I thought they would be, a bit more quieter than the iphone 4 I would say. The build quality is second to none however I am a bit weary of a small gap between the metal and the bottom cover which situates the simcard. It's also really quick, puts the old desire to shame.
GPS is fast to lock on and I love that new zealand is called aotearoa in the locations app (nice touch).

My first impressions...
I prefer the AMOLED screen of the original Desire BUT putting them both side-by-side I can't see any difference in colour or vibrancy when indoors or out of bright sunlight. In the sun there is a difference - not a lot, but enough to notice.
The camera is awesome. I took a few test shots inside and out in bright sun & its doing a better job than my 5 year old Canon.
When I first put the cover back on the SIM/ MicroSD card compartment I had a very small (2 x hair width) gap. I found that kind of worrying because I don't want to get dirt inside (not such an issue once more cases are available) but taking the cover off and putting it back on again has eliminated that gap. I guess I was being too timid when I replaced it the first time ;)
Both the battery compartment and card compartment covers fit perfectly. I haven't experienced any issue with the proximity sensor but most people who had those problems said it didn't start for a few days so I'll see how that goes.
I agree with teihoata - the speakers are quieter than the iPhone 4. Ringtones at maximum seem to be a little louder than the original Desire. Sound with the headphones on is great.
I'm still in two minds about htcsense.com, the HTC Hub. I was able to use it ok but it wasn't picking up my location despite the phone settings being set with this on. It's early days yet (both for that service & the phone) but at this point in time I wouldn't rely on HTC Hub to trace a stolen phone. I like the way they offer apps but its sure no replacement for the marketplace.
Speed on the DHD is AWESOME! And, OMG, some of the videos on YouTube look amazing on it.
Most of the time I hit buffering slowdowns when viewing YouTube videos on my PC. Using the same WiFi, I had a 100% Pure New Zealand video start playing within 3 seconds after clicking on it. It played seamlessly, with no slowdowns, jitters, buffering or any other annoyance. I recommend watching one of those 100% Pure ads when you get your DHD.
I'm a Grafitti lover from way back and until this year I had stuck with phones that required the use of a stylus. When I got my HTC Desire I found adjusting to a touch keyboard slowed me down considerably. Getting those keys right in the corner was a PITA, but right from the first minute of using the Desire HD that's become history. I didn't think I would like the change to touch buttons and since I used the trackpad I thought I would miss it. So far, neither of these changes phase me at all.
HTC have also released a capacitive touch screen stylus - its not cheap though.
One thing that would concern me a bit, if I was a guy, is the weight. The difference in size and weight to the original Desire is noticeable & will probably be more noticeable once a case is put on. For me, this isn't an issue as I usually drop my phone in a bag. If you usually have your phone in a shirt pocket the weight will pull the pocket down. Phone + case might be too big for trouser pockets.
Damager:
Great first impressions! One thing i have noticed from various samples of video, is the brightness/white balance seems to vary consideraby in dodgy light. Let us know how your HD videos go please if possible!

Dingbatt: Thank you Elpie for some 'real world' first impressions. I have been waiting for some practical reviews to assess whether it is worth getting a DHD to replace my Hero. In sunlight you said there was a noticeable difference to the Desire, can you say how (ie which is better, why). Is your Desire AMOLED or SLCD?
I'd been worried about battery usage but, so far, this has reassured me.
TheUngeek: 20 hours on WiFi?? Thats pretty impressive!
