kiwijunglist: Unhappy with gps & camera. GPS is nothing like the desire/nexus one. I would consider the Desire HD as well as Galaxy S. If the Desire HD came with a 4" screen and the same or smaller body size to Galaxy S I would grab it in a heart beat. You'd be better sticking with HTC if you can handle the large screen/size.

With regards going from Desire -> Galaxy S, I think it's not a big enough difference to upgrade, I would either get Desire HD, or wait another 6 months and then upgrade.

I've looked at the desire hd, but its currently $1200 and it seems ok but no improvement to battery performance, its screen in sunlight performance is questionable??, and etc. But atleast it has a flash on the camera! Lol.

Is the camera really that bad on the sgs?

The galaxy S is screen is bad in sunlight too I can't read it in direct sunlight but if you shade it with your hand it's very good. The Desire HD was about $850 - 900 from clove (currently out of stock). When the galaxy S come out here it was about $1200 as well, price will drop to a similar amount as the galaxy s over the next few months. Desire HD has better battery performance than standard Desire. The camera performance without using the flash is a lot better on the desire hd cf the galaxy s. It depends what your want to take pictures of. Pictures on a bright sunny day or slightly overcast will be ok for facebook, but they have lots of artifacts when viewed at more that 1024x768 resolution.

I was chatting to the reviewer who has owned both Galaxy S and Desire HD, and he likes the Desire HD more.

ArtooDetoo: GPS update.

Getting a lock indoors at ~15 seconds, which ain't bad I reckon. Used the LbsTestMode settings to make a couple of minor tweaks but I think the most useful thing was tapping the 'Delete GPS Data' button. Basically satellites began popping up immediately after that and the tests show >5 and up to 10 satellites seen, up to 7 with a signal >20.

So I am happiness filled.

If anyone wants my settings, post and I'll put them up. Having seen very little in the way of complaints here, I'd say most are already happy enough with their GPS, so I won't be surprised if there're no takers. Good-oh then...

Go on then. I haven't done a thing with GPS. Maybe living in Christchurch, and knowing how to read and follow a map I haven't needed a GPS device. Having said that, my Gramin Forerunner 305 is fantastic and I wouldn't bother going for a run off road without it (only tracks, doesn't navigate).

So what's all the fuss with the GPS, maybe my simple needs just haven't allowed me to open my eyes to the wonder of GPS. So you're saying I could fire up GPS on the phone, get directions (yes I've done that much already), but I don't have the turn by turn audio.

So what am I missing with the GPS?

I've been really impressed with the Galaxy in full sunlight. I can see mine fine, well not perfect, but way better than my LG KM Arena that I had before.

I think I need to hand in my "wanna be Geek" card.

This morning not only did I miss my flight to Auckland, when I finally arrived at the airport I hadn't a clue how to turn the (work) hand-me-down Blackberry 8310 (or some such number) off.

I pressed every button on the side and top and thought I had it right. Well the screen turned off.

That was me done. On the plane, arrive in Auckland and press the same button as I did to "turn off" the phone and realised it had only been in standby.

I became one of "those" people that irritate me, the ones that insist on using their phone well after everyone's been asked to turn off the electronic devices.

The taxi driver who took me back to Akld airport had to explain to me where the button was to power off the phone.

Give me a Samsung Galaxy S any day. It makes sense to have a separate power off button. Yes, I'm red-faced and ashamed - also becuase I did a stupid thing and miscalculated the time I needed to get up for my 5:55am check in [groan].

Back home now, having almost drained my phone during the day. Galaxy now charging up. All is well in the world again :-D

Thanks, I already had mPass on my phone, the outgoing flight was JetStar. I simply didn't calculate backward enough how early I needed to set my alarm. I suspect my brain couldn't fathom I'd need to be up prior to 5am. JetStar actually sent a txt the night before which I thought was nice and I STILL didn't twig. Anyone would think I was blonde!

I took the advice of another member to download Tasker which I'm trying to fathom. If you don't RTFM for that app, you're lost almost immediately. Intuitive it isn't. So that's my bedtime reading now. Difficult learning curve, but it's like learning a new computer language so once you've got it, it all becomes clear and unleashes lots of power. I think. I hope, actually...

Ahhh, now that's definitely Linuxluver. I was tempted to download as well and then spend next week in Q'town teaching myself how to use it. It sounds like it'll do everything, which means it's not going to be a simple app to get your head around. I shall stay tuned to all updates.

Nope, it was me. Tasker is the mutts proverbials. Get on it now! (hope you're not a visual person, those two sentences may bring an unwanted image to mind)

Good luck R2D2, you won't need it, you'll get there eventually! I'm still learning as I try to achieve news things with it, the number of other softwares you can replace with Tasker is just stunning!

That's really nice they give a 7 day trial. I'll be printing out the manual tomorrow and putting the *.apk file on my phone ready for it to spring into life on Saturday when I can sit down and start to wrap my head around it.
And sorry for (again) getting the wrong person linked to past posted details. My memory is shot.

While we are talking apps that aren't working as expected, has anyone found Meridian stops playing the album after about 3 songs? Its happened numerous times and on different albums.

Yep. I walk to work most days. It's about 9km each way, so I listen to the tunes from my phone via bluetooth and Meridian. Meridian will be set to random and repeat forever. It usually craps out a couple of times in the 1:20 it takes to get to work (or back). Often after receiving a txt.

I've wondered if the Galaxy S is tuned to kill apps after a certain amount of time if you don't interact with them. Meridian lasts longer if I pull the phone out of pocket, unlock it, bring meridian to the foreground and then re-lock it. My Nexus One did not behave this way. The Galaxy S does.....same app. Well....a few updates later, but Meridian has behaved this way on my Galaxy S from the day I got it.

I use the paid version of Meridian.

I also have the Lithium Player which I think is *seriously* cool....but it doesn't seem to support the button controls on my SONY Bluetooth stereo headset.....so I use Meridian on the longer walks because I can drive the music through my headset without touching the phone.

Right O, so it's not just me being daft. I find when the music stops (and it is the end of a song) after I press the play button, it repeats that song and then merrily carries on with the remainder songs in the album.

9k walk to/from work is a decent walk. That'll give you plenty of time to be tweaking your phone :-D

Not so much what we're missing as a 'concept', but more that there is a widely held belief that the GPS as stock... um... not to put too fine a point on it - sucks. In fact a couple of posts back there's a reference to its suckiness. I did a little googling and found some settings that improved my TTFF time from a couple of minutes if at all, to an average 15 seconds. So I'm thinking that it's pretty decent now. And where I was getting 50 metre accuracy (misnomer) before, it's now indicating 10 metres, and that's in the house. Maps is confirming that, down to pinpointing where I am in the house.

So whatever was broken before has been sorted with the settings.

Now, I can't claim that the SGS GPS is as good as or better than the recent competition, but it's definitely better than my better half's iPhone 3Gs. So yaaaayyy!

I will post the settings over the weekend for the sake of it, but the silence in the thread has been deafening so I'm thinking that the majority of folks here already have the fix or like you, don't need GPS or care about it. C'est la vie. :)

Post settings plz, my GPS accuracy is usually about 30-80m outside (when it works, never seen it below 30m, as reported by GPS test app), I can't get a lock inside. Also mention the GPS program you used to tweak the settings. Thanks.

The Desire HD certainly looks like a nice device, but comparing it to the Desire (1st gen), I'm not seeing a lot of benefit except the 8MP camera.

The battery performance is about the same (e.g. pretty poor)

Same screen (SLCD - my Desire has an amoled tho)

Very poor speaker (I was blown away by the speaker on the SGS).

No gorilla glass (I just think it feels nicer, it's also very tough apparently).

I've owned HTC smarphones for the last 5 years. I've generally been very pleased with them, but they always seem aimed more at a Professional market - rather than an enthusiast market. What i mean is they lack some of the more cutting edge features, tend to skimp on others (poor speakers on every one of them, weak multimedia, etc). A change might be in order..

The lack of a flash on the sgs is a major let down though. What the hell were they thinking of?! So i'll have to investigate just how much of a pain that'd actually be to me.

Reading some of the comments on that video, it seems there are a lot of people just as happy to stay with their SGS too.

But thank you for your replies, they have been genuinely useful.

that's why i suggest sticking with the desire, but if i had to choose between Desire HD vs Galaxy S I would choose the Desire HD, as long as you can handle the slightly larger size to accomodate the much larger screen. Battery life is a moot point you need to recharge both phones every night. S-Amyloid vs S-LCD, not a big difference, it's negligible. Desire HD is reported to be slightly faster. You know that you will get excellent firmware and driver support with HTC, Samsung is pretty poor here. Speaker on the SGS is reported to be alot better, cleared and loader, however if I want to listen to music I would still use external speakers over the built in speaker so this is not a big deal either. GPS dodgey on Galaxy S, I expect the GPS to be better with HTC judging on their previous phones. Desire HD camera, takes much clearer photos and has a flash. I just wish they made it a 4" device like the Galaxy and not a massive 4.3". As far as speed comparison goes, I've read that the Desire HD's is a bit faster than Galaxy in the benchmarks. If you compare Desire HD vs normal Desire, Desire HD is a lot more powerful.
