Now, I can't claim that the SGS GPS is as good as or better than the recent competition, but it's definitely better than my better half's iPhone 3Gs. So yaaaayyy!

I will post the settings over the weekend for the sake of it, but the silence in the thread has been deafening so I'm thinking that the majority of folks here already have the fix or like you, don't need GPS or care about it. C'est la vie. :)

Inside I get a reading of 10 metres. If I zoom in, it even has me in the right part of the house! I also don't think it takes too long to get a reading, and I'm not a patient person.

Sounds like your GPS already has the fix applied then because that performance sounds bang-on. Your ROMzilla already tweaked, perhaps? Kiwijunglist's device sounds dire though. Did you happen to get a signal reading as well? I seem to be getting 30+ as Cno on 3 satellites continuously, indoors again, which certainly seems fairly robust. I'm not decrying others' results, mind you, since it's possible to have hardware differences between units due to manufacturing tolerances, antenna connections, impact damage and suchlike. I would like all SGS users to have at least the performance I'm getting (and you're getting), so if my settings help those 'less fortunate' than us, I'm happy to provide 'em. :)

Blackberry schmackberry - the old addage "if in doubt, pull the battery out" springs to mind. (When I say old addage, I mean a minute or two, as I cleverly coined that particular addage as I typed this. What a talent I turned out to be).

I reckon your OCD/AR personality type more or less guarantees you'll be providing me with nifty Tasker scripts well into my dotage, so the pressure for me to crack it is off now. :D The baton is yours, young Jedi. [*snickers, and nods head in smug expectation*]

Hi KJ...

Here's the skinny, and I hope it helps you as much as it helped me.

First, choose a home page with some free space and perform a long press. Youll get a pop-up dialog.

Choose Shortcuts.

Choose Activities (wait for it to populate - might take 30 seconds or so depending on what's on your SGS)

Scroll down to LbsTestMode and select.

You now have a shortcut to the LbsTestMode utility where there are many options for you to experiment with. Here's some of the options...

Get Position Test
Application Settings
SUPL/CP Settings
Test Application

and the biggie, for me...
Delete GPS Data

That last thing is in fact the first thing I did, on the basis of clearing out nthn hemisphere bollocks, but that's a total juju on my part. YMMV. Also, turn your wifi to off before you change any settings, but turn it back on once you've made 'em.

In your case, it might take a minute or two to lock the satellites in since you have a problem there, but if you do as I did, and delete the GPS settings, it might shortcut the fix time. Be aware that the first symptom I experienced that told me something had improved was the satellite icon in the notification bar wasn't doing its little dance for more than 10 seconds. A very good feeling, I can tell you.

The first item, Get Position Test, merely shows you if your SGS's GPS is actually capable of receiving a signal, plots your position and continually resets itself with 'hot booting' to make and break TTFF.

Application Settings is the place to change stuff to tweak the performance. List follows...

Session Type set to Tracking
Test Mode set to S/W Test
Operation Mode to Standalone
Start Mode to Hot Start
GPS Plus to On
Dynamic Accuracy to On
Accuracy to 50
GPS Logging to Off

Next, use these SUPL/CP Settings

Server FQDN Type to Custom Config
Server to supl.google.com
Server Port to 7276
SUPL Secure Socket to Off
AGPS Mode to SUPL

That's the guts of it. Note that most of your settings will probably match mine. I only had to change a couple. Restart your SGS and turn your wifi back on.

The Test Application screen has 3 buttons as follows:

Performance Test
H/W Test
Show Sensor Data

Those are self-explanatory and that's the fun part, since you'll be able then to compare notes with others with your results and it should be a real help in diagnosing any GPS faults on your device.

Many already have the update. Didn't work for me with my ROMzilla but I have Doc's Froyo ROM so it doesn't matter.

Remember to update your Kies to the latest version in order to download the Froyo update.

Hmmm...

Maybe that only shows on Froyo or maybe it needs to be rooted. Don't know the answer to that I'm sorry.

You should know that GPS (generally) doesn't work inside buildings. The signals are very weak and the tin roofs of most kiwi homes are a barrier to reception However if you live in a house with a (concrete) tile roof you'll probably be ok.

And as R2D2 says clear the old data if it's an import otherwise there will be a delay to your first fix (because the 'seed' data will be based on the other side of the world). Also turning A-GPS on helps with getting a fast fix time, but wouldn't leave it on if you want to manage your data
