You should know that GPS (generally) doesn't work inside buildings. The signals are very weak and the tin roofs of most kiwi homes are a barrier to reception However if you live in a house with a (concrete) tile roof you'll probably be ok.

And as R2D2 says clear the old data if it's an import otherwise there will be a delay to your first fix (because the 'seed' data will be based on the other side of the world). Also turning A-GPS on helps with getting a fast fix time, but wouldn't leave it on if you want to manage your data

Usually when I'm inside somewhere I know where that somewhere is :-)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

kiwijunglist: that's why i suggest sticking with the desire, but if i had to choose between Desire HD vs Galaxy S I would choose the Desire HD, as long as you can handle the slightly larger size to accomodate the much larger screen.

I like HTCs, but for a couple of reasons I'd still get the SGS (now that I've read the GSMarena DHD review). Screen quality is one thing, sound quality is the main reason. The DHDs SQ is poor, personally I couldn't deal with that, but for others it may be good enough. I think the main reason to get the DHD over the SGS is if browsing is the prime consideration, the screen size and non-pentile nature make it better suited for that task.

kiwijunglist: Battery life is a moot point you need to recharge both phones every night.

Not sure this is true, battery life seems a real problem for the DHD, many users are reporting that they do not make it through the day with the DHD.

kiwijunglist: S-Amyloid vs S-LCD, not a big difference, it's negligible.

DHD doesn't have an S-LCD screen, and the difference is anything but negligible (see how many users are disappointed with the DHDs screen at XDA, read the GSMarena review, SGS trumps the DHD here).

kiwijunglist: Speaker on the SGS is reported to be alot better, cleared and loader, however if I want to listen to music I would still use external speakers over the built in speaker so this is not a big deal either.

I agree, listening to music via your phone speakers is naff and should be avoided.

Oh, finally worked out a relatively elegant way to get flip snoozing for an alarm working, missed that function from my N82 and Flipsilent for a while now...

Now when the alarm goes off the morning turning the phone over snoozes it, when it sounds again flipping it the other way does the same. It stops altogether when the USB power cable is disconnected, and launches NewsRoom (morning paper delivery!).

Now to get a profile that replaces Shake SMS functionality... Having trouble getting Gestures to work well though (the above works of phone orientation, rather than Gestures, because last thing you want is for a gesture to not register when you're trying to snooze the phone!).

@oxnsox - yup i don't expect GPS to work inside either, it's just that someone mentioned they were getting locks inside. (me=single story, tile roof, 2 exterior walls are 90% window)

They say its SLCD, but none of the other reviews agree because its display characteristics aren't good enough (it sounds like its just a regular TFT display, the same one thats in the HD2, which I used to own). HTC don't call it an S-LCD screen in their own website, but I don't think thats related to it being a Sony brand (Sony would actually want its screen technology advertised, just as Samsung does with AMOLED). Whatever the case they say its disappointing Vs S-AMOLED and Retina displays.

The comments I read that said Desire HD didn't have S-LCD stated that it was only the Desire Z that had SLCD, however on htc website it doesn't use either words for both HD & the Z. Confusing, dissapointing to hear GSM Feel the audio quality with headphones is a bit subpar, and the issue with the camera not refocusing in movies (something that maybe fixed via firmware), hopefully the headphone sound issue can be fixed with firmware as well (Galaxy S also had an audio out problem that was dramatically improved with firmware).

Someone uploaded a phone call to HTC customer service, who told him the screen was S-LCD, however i don't trust customer service people. I don't think the specs or comparisons of the screen matter that much, all of the screens now are fairly good, the most important thing would be if you are holding the phone in front of you does it look good enough inside / outdoors and are you happy with it.

Yep, I'm sure its screen is good enough, just pointing out that the difference isn't negligible (but unless you had a SGS sitting besides your DHD its not like you'd be acutely aware of the difference!). I had an HD2 and had no problems with the screen at all.

One thing that is starting to bug me is the talk of viewing angles in reviews and so forth. Seriously after a point viewing angles don't matter, its not like you'd be using the phone when you're viewing it at an acute angle in any case, so in practical terms its a near useless point of differentiation.

fair point, neglible not the right word. yup viewing angles are good enough on all the top end phones. unless you like using your phone at extreme angles?

I understand, probably wrongly, that northern hemisphere ROMs will also futz with your GPS settings, so if you have a kiwi phone (vf, XT) but have a nthn hemisphere ROM in it, I expect the GPS will suffer as much as if it were a nthn hemisphere device.
But that may be totally wrong.

rant: I'd quite like to have some surety about this stuff because I hate not knowing. I'm a developer and it's really tough having to guess about stuff. Android has many compelling draws, but sometimes it suffers compared to the locked down models of MS and Apple. That said, i despise the control Apple exerts over its partners. Hence the Android development pursuit.

I hope Google puts a more stringent certification process in place even if it makes things more difficult for me. In the end, the consumer will benefit. And I'll make more money. (Hopefully) :-)

You have lower GPS expectations than I personally believe you're entitled to KJ. But I'm no expert, so...

Maybe it's easier to assume that the worst case scenario is the logical probability, but I can attest that in tech, things that seemed to be beyond reach can turn out to be entirely do-able. To me, getting there is half the enjoyment of the journey, and overcoming the obstacles is the other half. Assuming the journey is worthwhile naturally.

But if you're determined that the SGS is too flawed for your satisfaction, and your comments certainly suggest that, then may I respectfully suggest that you flick it off and replace it with iPhone, or HTC, or whatever you believe is a better option. There doesn't seem to be any benefit is staying with something that you consider is a constant disappointment.
