kiwiharry: Have just got my SG II last week. Owned the HTC Magic previously and found the LED notification handy when messages/emails received or calls missed etc. The SG II doesn't have this feature.

I found an app in the marketplace that would emulate this, but it require a modified kernel for it to operate. Have found the step by step guide to downlaod and install the appropriate kernel, but what I need to find out is if the phones warranty is void if I installed a different kernel. Hopefully somebody here is able to answer this for me.

Thanks

H

Look for noLED in the market to do message notifications for you. No need to root.

Looks like noLED is quite the battery hog? Apart from that, it looks great! Anyone had experience with it?

Thats strange, looking at my battery stats noLED doesnt even register any usage? Where did you see it was a battery hog?

I was going by (perhaps foolishly) the Android market comments. I've installed it anyway and will see if I like it.

Slightly out-of-place in the thread I know, but I hope I speak for us all when I say how sad I am to see Steve Job’s passing.

I don’t think it’s an over-statement to say that we almost certainly wouldn’t have Android phones (at least as we know them today) without his vision and determination to forge a new direction in the mobile device space.

With Steve’s passing the world has lost one of it’s great technology visionaries, and we’re all a little poorer for that.

Yep I think you are right.

No, his influence has been greatly overblown - as is often the case when someone dies.

He did not invent the mouse or the GUI as has been inferred on TV;
He did not invent the smart phone, touch screens, or programmable phones as has been alluded;
He did not do the most programming on any of the projects apple did do;
He did not invent the Apple I (Woz did) and it was NOT the worlds first personal computer;
The Machintosh was NOT the first micro computer to have a GUI (The Apple Lisa was, and it was a commercial failure).
He didn't invent online music/video downloading - various pirate groups in did that;
He didn't invent Tablet computers - Star Trek did; and MS and others made them real years before the ipad.

In fact I am finding it hard to think of much he DID invent...

Improve on - sure! Very good at that. Popularising, very good at also. Having a stylish design - top marks.

But no actual inventing. Despite the patent lawsuits.

However:

With Steve’s passing the world has lost one of it’s great technology visionaries, and we’re all a little poorer for that.

That i can agree with. While the man was no where nearly as inventive as some say, he was certainly a visionary and certainly did a lot of great things - putting him head an shoulders above the majority of other big company's CEO's.

@brendan: while he hardly invent anything, he REINVENT a lot of things that allows user to interact technologies a bit easier ;) - and yes he did create a pop culture in tech world :)

Without the iP, I would say we wouldn't have the GS2 to enjoy today :).

Not really. Hacker culture existed long before Jobs came on the scene; infact Wozniak did more to promote that by inventing the apple computer than did Jobs; Jobs was always a businessman in in that arena I agree he showed some innovation (along with paranoia and cult-leader aspirations).

He was a great man, I'll not debate that. But we do him and us a dis-service by pretending he was something he was not.

Without the iP, I would say we wouldn't have the GS2 to enjoy today :).

Sorry, but it is a silly statement (no offense).

I was using smart-phones before apple even invented the Ipod. They were all moving to a similar interface before the iPhone because of the realities of a small touch screen interface - you need big icons and etc. for our fingers.

Apple simply got there first because it did not have to drag a lot of legacy code with it; it had the advantage of starting fresh. Job's innovation is pretty much limited to picking the right time, and integrating a few services (itunes store).

Samsung, HTC, blackberry and others were all doing versions of what Jobs did BEFORE jobs did it - and that is what annoys me with these obvious patent claims Apple is pursuing. It's nothing to do with who is right and who is wrong - it's all about excluding competition.

As I have said elsewhere, patents and copyright are a stupid idea that has had it's day. Their primary purpose now is to exclude competition and control the market. Industry is quite capable of progressing and being profitable without them.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Maybe we should move the Steve Jobs discussion elsewhere, this thread is big enough now.

I think you might have to factory reset your phone.

Because the new market app is a POS. . . . .do yourself a favour, and find the old market.apk (it's all over XDA).

Try clearing data and cache for the market app, under settings/applications/manage applications.

Edit: might need to reboot as well.
