ahh you must have a pin on the sim card.

The phone should really ask for the pin regardless of whether you have data on or off. Sounds like it might be a bug in the software.

It is possible to disable the sim card pin and just use a phone pin. This will solve your problem.

The advantage of a sim card pin is it prevents someone stealing your phone, taking out the sim card and using it in another phone to make toll calls.

Neets if go into Settings --> Security --> Set lock screen, the options for PIN etc are there. I hate having PIN codes on my devices so I always turn them off...

...and for the person who hates the TW lockscreen: Widget Locker. Much better than stock and no wizardry required to install it.

I'm pretty sure you can set something fancy up in tasker

Location = home , no pin
Location =/= home, pin required to unlock

Not sure if you can do this but this i imagine would be ideal;

Location = home , no pin
Location =/= home & phone had only been locked for 30 sec, pin required to unlock

@NZTechfreak, I noticed that when I enabled PIN on lock it doesn't do anything. I swype to unlock widget lock but there isn't a request for a PIN. Perhaps there is a setting in WL I need to change. Haven't yet looked.

Like your idea KiwiJ. Tomorrow is the day to install tasker. Maybe NZTF will get around to sussing that out before I catch up on the learning. Great idea though.

Hey peeps. Just came back from Coromandel. One thing I've noticed is as soon as I left Auckland my 3G no longer worked. I'm on 2Degrees, so I'm assuming it's their thing, where outside big centres I can not access internet. All good tho, as my phone lasted for about 4 days on one charge! And not just stand by. I've been taking pics, filming video and playing games on it etc.

My question is, how do I turn off the 3G on my phone? Any good app for a quick switch on/off for 3G? I've tried 3G on/off app from the market, but it does nothing, apart from taking me to some settings which make no difference to 3G connectivity. Would be cool to turn off the 3G and only turn it on when I want to jump on the net.

Get the official Froyo off Kies(assuming you don't have an NZ Vodafone Galaxy S)

Hold down power button and choose "Data Network Mode" and it'll change to deactivated = off

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I don't think Tasker can turn the inbuilt lock PIN on/off, but it does have its own alternative, if that one suited your use then that profile is incredibly easy to set up.

@Neets: Its probably a WL thing now that you mention it, since its replacing the inbuilt one (which does ask for the PIN if you've set it up to do that).

my phones coming a few days will i need a good screen protector? i normally get them/use from "zag tag ones ".........or wont i need it with the gorilla glass ?

You should get a screen protector, it does seem to get tiny tiny scratches despite what has been written elsewhere.

@wipeout I have extended controls (paid app, cheap as though) which has an option to activate/deactivate APN. Its what I've been using while in Queenstown, away from wifi. I prefer to use that even with the option on the power button.

I don't have a screen protector. I did try one for a few days but didn't like it. I carry around a micro cloth (supermarket bought) and use it when I feel there's enough smears on the screen, or something sricky etc.

2Degrees only have their own 3G in Ak, Wn, Ch & Dn. Their cheap broadband packs apply there. Everywhere else, you " roam" on Vodafone & you have to buy the $6 for 50mb 'National Data packs.'

Gutted, as Neets said the extended controls app or Beautiful weather has the option to disable 3G in one of it's settings(it just changes the APN to one that's not recognised and 3G goes off)

APNDroid has a widget that lets you enable/disable 3g.
