eracode: I understand that the Galaxy S is going to get Android 2.2 Froyo at some unspecified time in the future and that, amonst other things, that will give Flash 10.1 functionality on the phone.

What exactly will that mean for day-to-day use? I have been using my GS for a couple of weeks (and lovin' it) but I'm not really aware of anything it can't do due to NOT having Flash 10.1. What does Flash 10.1 do?

Enable all those annoying banner ads on websites to appear and instantly triple page load times!?

Youtube for example - non-Flash devices like the iPhone have to have a Youtube App to play videos because the web browser can't view them natively.

So how come I can watch Youtube on my GS with Android 2.1/without 2.2?

it's because Samsung has an app for it :) same with the Spica Lite

Try Metacafe, Grabaseat etc, they don't run :(

Unless, you use Skyfire beta 2.1 with Flash 10.1, then it'll run :)

Probably not - IIRC, Samsung are the only ones producing SAMOLED screens for smartphones, and at this stage, the only ones equipping their handsets with them (did I read somewhere that they're not onselling them to other manufacturers for 18 months?). If that's the case, they'll probably be selling the Galaxy S at a loss to get the technology out there; I suspect that's why the case is a little on the plastic-y side too. Kind of along the same lines as Sony with the PS3; use the device to get a new tech out in the market (Bluray) so it takes off and other OEMs start clamouring for it.

Shrug, I am not sure they really wanted this situation of their flagship phone having major lag.
There are people reporting lag of 20 seconds now.. phone just goes totally black.
I bet questions will be asked in the company now that more people are complaining about that lag..

Also the fact that 4 carriers in the states are probably asking questions to samsung about the issue now.
They are probably trying to get decent nand onboard those phones now seen they are being hardware custoized anyway.

The screen is lovely for sure but for a few dollars more I would have happily paid for decent nand or nor whatever is in there.. You see the breakdown of phone parts and the valuing of them and they usually only cost 200-300 US dollars, I doubt they are making a loss.

even the iphone 4 with its "retina" screen, the parts only cost about 188 usd, screen was 28 usd..

What's the gaming experience like on the Galaxy S, compared to the iPhone 3GS?

My iPhone replaced my PSP for occasional gaming, so if I were ever to consider a move to the "dark side" it'd have to compare favourably.

well hardware wise it kills the 3gs in 3d performance...
but probably less games though they are appearing...

Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:

Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7-14 million(?) triangles/sec

Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec

iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 7 million triangles/sec

Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec

And for comparison a few consoles:

PS3: 250 million triangles/sec

Xbox 360: 500 million triangles/sec

and of course the big screen makes them nice.. the touch is very accurate too...

Its definitely the pick of the Android bunch for gaming, more and more titles becoming available, but not to an iPod Touch kinda level yet in terms of numbers.

Certainly has replaced my PSP for me.

Don't forget that PSX emulation is coming soon, should be silky smooth on this GPU. The same dev says N64 emulation is also on its way. At that point you have a pretty amazing portable games device.

can someone tell me how (apart from the obviously better screen) the galaxy as everyone is saying in this thread is soo much better than the desire? Specs? Just i was thinking of getting the desire but maybe the galaxy a better option

The galaxy is better spec'd than the desire, but it also costs more, and some people worry that the support from samsung ( android / firmware upgrades) wont be as good. Also there a few reports of people experiencing lag on the galaxy.

The other pros for the Galaxy S are:
- better sound quality
- better music player, has EQ
- better video capabilities
- better video capture and camera (low light conditions that require a flash aside of course)
- 1.8GB of app installation space
- loudspeaker is orders of magnitude better than the Desire's
- TV Out via cable, DLNA
- better for high quality gaming
- WiFi tether
- better bluetooth implementation (my heart rate monitor wouldn't work with the Desire etc etc)
- significantly better battery life
- supports landscape rotation in both directions
- better apps package with paid licenses for Asphalt, VLingo, Aldiko EBook reader, Layar, Thinkfree Office with editing

Pros for the Desire:
- better UI, especially widgets support
- for me slightly better general speed of operation (opening apps etc, and my Samsung is not on branded firmware, so this is an apples with apples comparison)
- multicolour LED notification light
- hardware keys
- HTC email app better than Samsungs
- better browser with flashlite 4.0 (although I prefer browsing on the Galaxy S because of the larger screen)
- better initial setup (a lot better)

Also don't forget that the desire does not have proper multitouch. THe multitoch gets confused if it crosses the axis and it thinks your fingers are in opposite parts of the screen. Not a biggy for general use but some games will be unplayable and some apps eventually too probably.

I had the nexus and now couldn't go back, the samsung has its flaws, the lag is the major one but even that has vanished for me now after making a few tweaks. Samsung have said they will address the issue too and yes their past history isnt too great with support but considering this is one of the biggest android phone rollouts for them I think they will try and fix it.

People are finding new ways of speeding it up each day due to little silly things that samsung did, for me lag is not an issue anymore.

Also remember that the galaxy s kills the desire in cpu and gpu performance..

They are different generations of phones really, galaxy is definitely superior. the desire is outdated already as far as tech goes.

My wife didnt like my nexus one (she has an iphone), she likes the samsung and now wants one for herself.. she is a non tech person.. so i am amazed.. she just loves the big screen and how clear it is..

Mines:
2.6.29
umts_scm@S1-Build05 #2 and I haven't had any slowdowns yet.....it's a bit strange
I90000XXJF3(would be the firmware from Samsungfirmwares.com)

Some people dont recognise slowdowns, they just think small lag is normal :)
you see a phone that has been modified to use the nand instead and then you realise it had been lagging.
The problem is the lag can get worse depending on what is in memory etc...

jf3 is what the european phones come out with, then there was jf7, then jfb, then jg1 is out which is the latest.. They all suffer , though perhaps getting marginally better.....

Yeah some same they dont notice it but the are all the same inside... so probably comes down to applications etc
