Neets: Yes, the product code is correct. All set up on V9 (without lag fix) with tweaks 1, 2, and 3 (not MISC) and auto killer set to strict.

Phone looks like my phone again :)

BUT ... man it's laggy! Imagine setting everything back up with all that stuttering, delay and sluggishness. I expected it would be humming along like it was on the earlier version I had.

I thought it might have been due to now yet having auto killer and tweaks enabled but that hasn't seemed to make any difference.

The Media scanner is pee'ing me off. That of course is the cause for the delay on start up. But even after that's complete there's still lag.

I'm going to have to apply a lag fix. I'm surprised others are running without any lag fix. Makes me wonder what's different.

I've even gone and deleted some "safe" *.apk files that aren't needed by me (or the phone).

Noob as I am, I'm reluctant to offer advice, so please accept this merely as a possible suggestion...

Now that the official Froyo is out there, maybe try a vanilla update. I know it means hacking Kies/reg but it's a one click dealio now. And in my experience, painless. I used Ryan's OCLF as a post update lag fix, which seems to have done the biz performance wise.

I believe you can still apply ext4 (via CWM) when you're done but I haven't attempted that yet.

One thing I know, is that once the next update turns up, it should be a doddle to implement it via Kies given the nature of the reg hack. But I've been wrong before...

If you decide to go the vanilla route, I recommend the backup and restore option. Seems to be a no-brainer method of keeping your app/settings intact post update. And if you also have a Titanium bak, you're covered every which way.

Anyway, whichever way you go, best of luck and as always, I watch your steps with much interest.

Being an impatient woman, and spending some solid time on the phone customising it, I'm wondering if it's only noticeable becuase of the mass amount of changes I'm doing at one time.

I'll leave it alone for now and maybe after we both get a good nights sleep we'll be feeling refreshed and on fire again.

Okie dokie. I left things for a while. You know, have a life outside of flashing the latest and gratest on the phone. I've come back, things seem a bit smoother.

But no, I can't just leave things alone. I've now cooked myself a new battery. Welcome Mr Android.

I went girlie on my Widget Lock screen. And then my home screen is as I had it before.

Got my lagfix which is awesome for my 2.1 THANKS but then after playing for some time realise my haptic/vibration is not working... went to IRC webchat and supercurio says can't do much...he reckons the new stable voodoo lagfix which will be common for eclair and froyo and also would work on the stock(original) Kernel... YAY

also read somewhere that JJ1 and voodoo has this vibration issue and there are some people experiencing it out there? man hopefully the official froyo should be released soon so I don?t have to resist the tempt to upgrade to froyo doing any tweaks?

BTW Neets your lock screen is cool and which home & lock screen is that?

Been reading through the last few pages, but they haven't been terribly helpful, a lot of talk about lag fixes and the like - more turning me off than anything haha...

Basically, I'm fairly sure I'm going to buy one of these. But I have a few questions...

From what I've read there are problems with the GPS (one of the main reasons I want a smart phone in the first place) and with the unit slowing down over time? Are there easy work around for this? Will 2.2 fix the problems?

I follow engadget and have noticed that 2.2 has been released for the Galaxy in some locales, but has that found it's way to NZ yet? If it hasn't is there an ETA on that? Will what provider you're using affect which update you'll be able to use? I'll more than probably be on 2 degrees.

3rd question and kind of unimportant in the grand scheme of things but is it likely to work the the USB input on my Pioneer head unit?

Hi Ali7 The lock screen is Widget Locker, it's a paid app. You can choose which sliders you want, and what you want on the sliders (the action that will occur). When I slide the Internet one, it takes me to the Internet without unlocking the screen. The thing I wasn't aware of with Widget Locker is that you can still activate your status/notificaton bar. Anything that appears there you can get to while the screen is locked. I didn't need Tweetdeck as such, since any tweet that arrived shows in the status bar, but if I wanted to compose a Tweet without there already being something from Tweetdeck in the status bar then I'd need to have unlocked the screen to get to the app. And it's that reason I chose to add some of the other apps to the lock screen, so I can have them there handy without unlocking the screen.

I user LauncherPro. I've been able to customise what dock I use, and customise the icons for the 5 apps on the dock. I've also got:
Countdown widget
3G (small widget)
Smooth Calendar widget
Digital Clock

All apps (for the widgets I've used) are free.

I have the "donate" version of LauncherPro, but what you see on my homescreen you can do without the donate version.

The backgrounds are those that have been posted in this forum some time ago. Sounds like Kiwijunglist might have them, or provided them. There were links that took you to a secondary website where you could download them.

The SGS isn't for everybody. It's both a wonderful piece of kit and a flawed execution. If you want Nirvana on Android, you're probably a year early I'm afraid, especially if futzing with tweaks and hacks "turns you off". Maybe Apple's iPhone would be a better fit?

My experience with the phone has been primarily satisfying, currently demonstrating no issues with lag or poor GPS (the opposite in fact - vast improvement over the better half's iPhone 3Gs) and I have vanilla Froyo thanks to a hacked Kies updater. My Froyo is a UK version and it works as well as I might have hoped. There are some glitches of course, but nothing that I have been unable to resolve with some reading and asking of questions.

If your Pioneer head unit works with an iPod via USB, then it should also see your media files on the SGS - you will simply have to ensure the files are stored where the head unit expects to find them. Check the forums at Pioneer for specifics.

2. Providor not too important, as you can just update using the computer software and the internet. 2.2 is not available for NZ purchased phones. No ETA.

It's one of the best andriod phones you can get currently. The other top of the line phone being the Desire HD.

The phone out of the box doesn't have any noticeable lag. But as soon as you start installing apps lag creeps in. I don't think there's any magic number, or any particular app that triggers. It just happens. The lag fixes (and there are many to choose from) make a difference. You need to have the phone rooted in order to apply a lag fix. And rooting your phone will void your warranty. However a lag fix can be undone, and so can rooting the phone. So if there was a problem you have a way of getting the phone back to looking/behaving like it was prior to rooting it.

I know R2D2 (and probably others) have been active in a separate thread dedicated to GPS. Maybe one of them will let you know what the thread is, or you'll be able to search for it easily.

I can't help with the 3rd question. I had to ask my husband what you were talking about ;-)

EDIT: Hadn't looked to see who had replied before I wrote, and I see you've had a couple or replies, including R2D2.

Agree with Kiwijunglist. It's a great phone. Sure there's a couple of things that could be improved, but I'm sold on it, even knowing it's weaknesses. For me it's the best phone I could possibly want, and I haven't even tapped into all of it's potential yet. Of course what I want from a phone will be different to what you're more interested in.

Choice. I have no problem with mucking around with tweaks, hacks, customisation and the lack of is what's making me not want an iPhone. It was just that it sounded like there are a few fairly major problems with it, but with the two response above I see I'm probably just being over cautious.

It's one of the best andriod phones you can get currently. The other top of the line phone being the Desire HD.

Sorry to hear you still have occasional issues with your GPS. Ignore the following if, as is likely, you're already aware of this...

I stumbled across a thread 'out there' which had this advice - fire up the GPS while connected to wifi, and don't boot into your Nav app until you have a lock. Supposedly the lock is faster (not something I've had an issue with since I did the set-up for local conditions), and the positioning more accurate.

As I said, if you already tried that and it didn't help, ignore my words of wisdom.

Not that it makes a jot of difference to you, but I can honestly say my GPS performance is all I could hope for. Now, the nav software - different story. Still looking for a 'perfect' app there.

And as a heads-up, I reported the Navigon audio TBT/music attenuation issue to their devs, with a response that said they're looking into it and will hopefully include it on the next update (Q4-2010). And I also asked them to look into the crap road identifiers they've foisted on us. You know - "St Heliers Bay Rd" expressed as "Street Heliers Bay Ar-Dee", "Elstree Ave" as "Elstree Ah-Vay", "Mount Wellington Hwy" as "Mt Wellington Hwee" and so on.

I'm gob-smacked that something as universal as Rd could be pronounced Ar-Dee in any nav software, but there you go. If I knew what xml file to edit, I'd do a search and replace to make Rd into Road, Ave into Avenue and so on. Can't find the info thus far though.

Which is the app used by you R2D2? I've done some basic googling so have got a brief overview as to what's available.

Using Google Maps and Navigon in equal measure, mostly just testing as I haven't needed to use GPS in anger very often.

Navigon has its map tiles stored on the phone so doesn't need 3G while you're navigating. Google Maps Navigation downloads its map tiles as it needs them, so 3G must be available, especially if you detour at all, otherwise it loses its position and the nav function basically stops.

There are other nav apps out there though, almost all of them paid - Navigon and Google Maps are free on the SGS.

Works fine with my Pioneer headunit. Set it to USB mass storage, like KJ mentioned, before plugging it into the usb drive on your headunit, and you're away. :>

Navigation app by google works like a charm. Since it's been updated for NZ use, I don't see any use for all the other third party GPS apps tbh. :>
