ArtooDetoo: Now that I have all the doodads functional again, I can once more bask in the glow of the almost-perfection that is 2.2.1. Still smooth, still responsive, still a joy to use. Is it better than an iPhone 4? Dunno, but it's at least as good in its user interaction, it's lighter and the screen is bigger, and it's noticably superior in the great outdoors. If nothing else, the iP4 has a real competitor in this phone.

Time will tell if lag reappears, but so far, nary a whiff of it.

And the GPS is locking, in my office, in under 10 seconds. Awesome.

Thanks to the OP for the heads-up that this update was available and to the peeps who chimed in with tips and advice. And Mummy Neets for the cheek and encouragement.

PS: I just know that some other tempting Update-O-Goodness™ will get me lusting to flash again, so expect this to be a short-lived oasis of contentment.

I don't consider my upgrade to be as smooth as others I've done. What a royal pain in the a$$ it was. I realise some of it was doing a factory reset and then having to set up the system settings from scratch. Then the hour I spent in vain trying to get the CSC fixed (appears it's not just me according to the XDA forum). And to top it off, my battery is draining faster than a swimming pool with a turd in it.

I've been left a bit disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high based on the Doc roms. And he's getting a Nexus S (or whatever it is) so his dev on the SGS will slow if not stop. Oh I've been spoilt and I don't like anything less ;-)

Neets: I really wanted to stay on stock 2.2.1. Yeah yeah, I've only had it on overnight. But overnight my battery drained to 19%. I feel like lokhor ;-)

I had flashed with a full battery, and had my phone connected to the computer during flashing of the CSC. Sure I expected some battery drain but not that much overnight.

So I'll be going to Doc's rom tonight. And I've promised myself to get to bed at 9pm and asked hubby to kick me off the computer if I'm still here at that time (which he's fairly confident I will be) :P

Go to your wi-fi settings -> Menu -> Advanced and change sleep policy (the phones not yours)
It seems to be set at never by default

I found this was killing my battery over night while the phone was idle, now it's awesome

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Thanks for that. I'll make the change. I had tried that on Doc's V9 but found as soon as I turned the screen on it automatically showed 3G data connected - even when I was at home with Wireless available.

The Never setting is what I had on Doc's V9 and I didn't have this battery drain problem. But I'll give your suggestion a go and monitor whether 3G kicks in. Cheers :-)

Thanks for that. I'll make the change. I had tried that on Doc's V9 but found as soon as I turned the screen on it automatically showed 3G data connected - even when I was at home with Wireless available.

The Never setting is what I had on Doc's V9 and I didn't have this battery drain problem. But I'll give your suggestion a go and monitor whether 3G kicks in. Cheers :-)

The stock eclair rom would be at full charge when I went to bed, then at 50-52% the next morning. Changing that setting made a huge difference.

It also seemed to force the phone to reboot during the night (that's loud in the middle of the night)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

That wifi never sleeping setting is universal on 2.2.1 I think. Had it on my SGS and only discovered it because the wifi wasn't working initially. Read about it a number of times since though. It's strange choice for a default setting, but this is a leaked 'beta' release after all so I can't get too indignant.

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

sms was fine, just mms had issues and got it to work intermittently, but I think that was partly a VF connection issue in the area. I got my wife to send me a pxt from her iphone and it failed to send as well.

Once I searched for network providers and selected Vodafone NZ all the settings seemed to work apart from mms & the default for internet was 'VFNZ Gateway' which I had to change to 'VFNZ Internet' to get online.

The sms number appeared by itself.

On my stock Eclair the default wifi was set to never as well?

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

When you look at your message app settings, is the VF number actually listed under Message center? Or is it blank? Or is the Message center item invisible?

Yep, I didn't put it there either must have been when I selected VF as the provider

More mysterious still. When I was doing the APN setup, I chose Vodafone as provider, but it didn't populate the Message center with anything. It was blank. Go figure...

Settings/Wireless and network/USB settings.

You should see -

* Samsung Kies
* Media player
* Mass storage
* Ask on connection

It defaulted on Kies for me and I had to tell it twice that I wanted it to be Mass storage. It seems to have stuck for now.

OMG I have been looking how to use this a mass storage for ages I obviouslly need to go through the menu's again.
Its like my Nokia now.

Forgotten: So, first time flashing my phone tonight, went to Doc's XXJPU (3.0.1).

Wow, just wow.

Going from Telecom's version of Eclair to this is pretty amazing. The phone feels like it was actually worth the money now.

After setting up APN's everything appears to be working, SMS both inbound and outbound work (saw Artoo's trouble so thought I'd check this). Data is working fine, only workaround I had to use was this using terminal emulator:

su
chmod 0666 /dev/usb_mtp_gadget

To get the phone to talk to Kies so I could copy my contacts back to it. Backed up all my apps with Titanium backup before I did anything, but didn't really have that much saved so I decided to start fresh anyway.

Backed up Eclair and my /efs folder before I did anything also using ROM manager (and terminal emulator again) and have it sitting safely on my PC now incase I need to go back to it for warranty reasons. Glad I did a lot of reading and asked questions before I tried anything, everything went off without a hitch.

I'm guessing the phone needs to be rooted to perform this kind of superuser command?

There's another version of this fix which uses 0777 instead of 0666, and it's added to init.rc to survive reboots.

Is anyone else having issues with intermittent 3g internet?

Yes, you need to be rooted to get Super User. If you use Chainfire's file then it's a real easy 10second flash in Odin.

When you say intermittent 3g internet, do you mean it just turns it on for no good reason? I had that last night, just the once and it showed both Wifi and 3g going at the same time. Daft.

Intermittent 3g internet = Mostly not working at all, with random fits of working perfectly.

Does anyone have recommendations on a nice froyo rom that is worth trying out whilst I wait for a more stable version of the latest to be released?

Nice one, it sounds promising :-D And he seems to be a fairly helpful bloke (I assume). I've got my own issues with the OPS CSC on JPU and he's responded to my question.

So what are the most promising ROM's for everyday use, with good battery life and excellent bluetooth support? I am running ultimate and it's awesome except for bluetooth which seems to break every few hours and the phone needs a restart.

I had doc v7.62 but I thought it's battery life was very average, and it was so basic, it didn't include many things I consider to be essential such as a battery monitoring app and swype.

I might even re-flash my phone via Kies (Reghack is still causing it to say it has JH1) in an attempt to properly grab the update package. . . .I tried to when I originally flashed JP3, but I was praying so hard that everything would work that I didn't notice the save location window in the background. By the time I realised, it was gone.

I'm thoroughly sick of JP3's lag now, so might actually just head back to JPO/JPP/JPO and apply the Voodoo lagfix until JPU becomes stable, and I have a CSC fallback solution if it all turns to custard.
