Nice one.

Might have to try the terminal emulator string you have for getting Kies to work (only need it for USB connection to the PC. Prefer that to mounting the internal and external cards). I hadn't come across that wee gem, where was it mention? Cheers.

Oh, I do like that. I've saved the shortcut with the kies image. Very slick work around.

I'll not be on wireless until I get home. My phone is on charge at work and I'll charge it again tonight when I get home and then see how long the battery lasts. In which case I guess I reserve judgement until another day :)

Just for fun I have emailed the Samsung NZ this morning, asking when the 2.2 update will be made available in NZ. Here is their reply:

" Thank you for your email, The Froyo update is currently under test, and
although it hjas been released in other countries it does differ due to
Network requirements in New Zealand. This will be released once testing
has been completed."

Please note that I copy/pasted the contents of the email they sent me. So they don't even proof read what they write. But I guess the most painful thing is that there is no date for the update.

So, I'm kinda sick of waiting. Can someone post a link to a Kies registry spoof thing, so I can finally get the Froyo and start using Skype etc.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that I don't have a 3 button recovery mode enabled. But if I run into trouble, I'm sure I can borrow one of those rigs some guys have built on here to flash it.

The other thing, how can I back up my current fw version, just for the warranty purposes?

Looking at the link Kiwijunglist gave there's a section in there about how to backup your current ROM. But it does say to have the 3BR working first.

Take a look at the last page of the attached PDF for instructions on how you can get the 3BR.

Have had it off charge since 13:30ish, currently sitting at 72% battery. Went into town to run some errands, took about 7 phone calls, a few texts and GTalk/MSN for a bit. Kept wifi/GPS on the whole time. So ~30% drain over 3 hours, not amazing really.

Might have to use the recommended wifi settings and turn GPS off, I did notice a massive difference is battery life with GPS turned off running Eclair.

That's a lot really. Some say the modem can have an impact on battery life Pele76 has a post on the Doc thread which provides recommendations on which modem is most likely the best based on carrier/country.

Where did you track that rather obscure piece of info down? I'll have to find hubbys phone to see if I can receive/make txt messages and MMS. Titanium Backup is still doing it's thing.

Some obscure telecoms site that came up in search for set message center (yank spelling). In it was a reference to sms, and in the post was a reply from somebody who evidently knows about such stuff. Now that the numeric string is known, it should be a doddle to find it again. But since it's already here, and the mods are unlikely to lose it, it's all kinda moot now.

I hope it helps others who have this issue. Maybe DrD can add it to the knowledge base.

Well if that's true, neither of us will ever pay for a txt as long as we can still type.

I'm going to write an app that lets you do it, with a list of different international carriers to sponge off. I'll make millions. Or maybe hundreds anyway. Oh wait; with Tasker, you can prolly do that for free. Maybe not the big earning app I was looking for then.
