stevejenks: Have done both a factory and hard reset. Have had the same sim for the last 2 years with the same number. Will try out a Voda card tomorrow and see what happens. What would be the cost to replace the sim card reader?

Couldn't tell you, varies from model to model and most of our issues are covered under warrant; ask the Voda guy

Don't bother looking at the SIM card reader get another SIM into the handset from Vodafone or 2D

If it works then the handset is not suited for the Telecom network, If No SIM card works in it then return the handset to the trademe dealer and request a refund

This comes down to a couple of things:

1.The phone is not compatible with Telecom XT (it needs to be 850 MHz) but you say the IMEI passed the check page'

2.The phone is reported stolen to Telecom and blocked.

Cheers for the help guys, yep hopefully the person I dealt with is reasonable and will give me a refund if it's buggered, but I highly doubt it

If in doubt involve trade me, they helped me out on a couple of dodgy deals in the past but it is the risk of trading online

You still need to determine exactly what's happening.

If you insert a 2degrees or Vodafone SIM card and it works then most likely it's the wrong type for Telecom. Unless the auction said clearly this is Telecom compatible then it would be the buyers fault for not getting the correct type.

If the auction says "Telecom compatible" then you might try another Telecom SIM card and if still doesn't work then the phone could be faulty.

If the auction says "Works on 2degrees only" then most likely stolen.

In any case, contact Telecom and ask if the IMEI is blocked, which again would indicate a stolen or lost phone.

Once you know what's the problem then you will know how to approach the seller.

By the way, with your telecom SIM in the phone. Try to enter * # 0 0 1 1 # the phone should enter Service Mode if your phone is using stock ROM.

The third line of the screen will show you which band your phone is using currently. Mine is showing WCDMA 850 Band 5. I am on Telecom as well.

If you only see WCDMA 2100 Band 1 and it does not change (try doing this in different areas), then your phone might be missing the 850MHz band / band 5. If it is showing WCDMA 850 Band 5, your phone might be blocked by Telecom (could be a lost / stolen phone).

What is the model number of the phone? There are a number of variations of the Galaxy S2. It should be on the label under the battery.

However there are no non-Telecom compatible ones. All the GSM/WCDMA Galaxy S2's unlike the original Galaxy S have support for 850Mhz.

I was going to suggest it could've been a US CDMA/LTE variant but if the image on the TradeMe auction is correct then it isn't one of those.

theUpload: Hi their.

I have encountered a similar issue in my place of work and here are the possibilities and solutions.

1) you bought a non XT compatible S2. Unfortunately If the s2 was origionally imported from overseas it may not work on XT, it is an issue we have encountered at work a few times with the odd unit. The way to find out is to visit this page; follow the intructions and input your IMEI (a unique code for your phone) into the checker and it will tell you. You can find your IMEI by going to the phone application and inputting *#06#
[http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/ournetwork/phonecompatibility/]

2) you phone may be in 2G mode. jump into settings -> mobile netoworks / wireless and networks (dependend ton software) and look for a mode that says either "2G mode to save power' or WDCMA auto. make sure its set to auto OR select WCDMA.

3) Are you in XT coverage?

4) could be faulty software do a factory reset..

5) pop in a Vodafone or 2Degrees card and see what happens

Dude all s2 are xt compatible

Should be fine, it doesn't come with the 850MHz optimised modem but still works no worries.

Your problem will likely be with the SIM card.

I assume you also tried the factory reset, you may have said that already and I overlooked it.

Not in my experience, we (at dse) sold two variants, one that was not XT compatible and we accidently sold the wrong type to a customer and Samsung themselves confirmed to this customer that her variant of the S2 was not XT compatible.

just because it has the 850 band doesn't mean it will work, XT tested the initial range of Xperia phones in NZ and they weren't compatible with their network despite being quad band.

I'm sorry but that's wrong. The i9100 sold by VF and 2D and the i9100T sold by Telecom were the only S2's sold in NZ. Both work perfectly fine on XT (having owned both). The T model varied only in that it had to meet different emissions standards in Australia and had modem firmware optimised for 850MHz networks.

The scenario you describe applies exactly to the Galaxy S not the S2. The i9000T supported 850MHz while the i9000 did not. So a Galaxy S for VF would not work on XT.
