I would be inclined to see if you can borrow a battery for a few minutes - pop it in your phone and make sure the phone still goes - then hook it up to your charger and see if it looks to be charging. If it looks like it is then my money would be on a dead battery.

If its just the battery then I would bite the bullet and just buy a replacement - they look to be <$30 (pbtechs website today).
Batteries get a hard time and a bit over 2 years is probably not unusual.

If its a problem in the phone though I would have a go at the CGA.

Bought a new battery and a new charger. So its none of those..unfortunately.

Dont know if there is anything helpful on it - some people are swearing its the cable. When you say new battery and new charger - is it a new cable as well? Couple of people swear this was the issue. Also - on the second page someone did a reset of the phone and said it fixed the issue. Worth a shot?

Yeah - I thought it might be the cable etc, so I bought a new charger and an original S3 battery for it. That cost me $40 bux battery. And the S3 Charger $20. Thanks. Haven't tried the reset yet..the phone is with NL @ the moment..well see!

The reason being is that the phone works fine if the battery has charge..possibly something to do with the charging port?

Just an update:

Spoke to CAG Consultant :

If it's a minor repair i.e the charging socket needs to be replaced i.e that is $60 then they recommend that I pay for it however if they come back saying phone needs to be replaced that's a different story, eg the system board is dead..

Ta you all for your help on. I will keep you guys posted once I hear from NL.

While cameras may be the closest on the list to phones, I'm not sure that retailers would be comfortable with the assumption a phone and camera are interchangable, as this assumes how they are used is similar. How many people keep their camera in their pocket all day, every day? Lend it to their two-year-old kid to keep them amused? Drop it in the toilet?...

All I'm suggesting is that there's probably no other device that can provide an accurate proxy of mobile phones' use, wear and deterioration in condition over time. I'm disappointed (but not surprised) that Consumer haven't provided such information for mobiles. It comes back to a post I made a few weeks back on another thread: it would be useful to see the data that Disputes Tribunal officials (and higher) use in reaching their decisions regarding goods' acceptable lifespans. Or is it that each official needs to make such a call in each individual case? Surely they have some guidelines?

BTW - I've got an out of warranty Sony Duo 11 tablet from Noel Leeming in for repair at the moment. Tablet is 18 months old, Sony warranty was 12 months. Tablet dropped a vertical line of pixels on screen and Sony agreed two weeks ago to replace the screen free of charge under the CGA. Unfortunately, when I got tablet back last week, it can no longer find its operating system, so its back with Service Plus at the moment )-:

The tablet is a dog - this is its third time into shop for repair since purchase. Thankfully, the CGA has been of real assistance now its out of warranty.

True. It may be able to help as a guideline if you have data on a range of products.

btw don't drop things in the toilet, that's how I killed my Palm V.

Not always fatal, in my experience! My last non-'smart'-phone survived surprisingly well after a toilet dunking. Initial signs were not good, but a good dry-out and a night in the hot water cupboard and all was hunky-dory. Similar story with my previous smart phone in a swimming pool. With such a history I guess I should look at a water-proof model next time!

To be honest the main reason for the S3 not charging is due to corrosion on the charging port, look at this with a flashlight and you'll likely see there is some green corrosion.

And this, is not covered by the CGA as it is actually liquid damage caused by pocket-sweat (wear and tear) or similar, 2 years you should be also looking at upgrading your phone.

Inphinity: So wave the CGA at them, I would imagine the 'reasonable' life expectancy of a mobile to be somewhere between 3 and 5 years. However, if it's not charging because of the battery, rather than a phone fault, I would imagine a battery to be a wear & tear item and potentially not covered.

Have not read all the responses - but Inphinity's is a good one.

Consumer Guarantees Act has no hard and fast rules, and it all comes down to your particular facts. If you can demonstrate that a phone/battery should still charge after 2 years (I will agree with you on that one!) then they absolutely must repair, replace or refund the original purchase price. If they can show as Inphinity has suggested that it is reasonable for a battery to wear down after 2 years, and needs to be replaced (presuming this is the only problem with your phone), then they are not required to repair or replace.

Note: Many warranties exclude batteries, but this is not a warranty issue, its a CGA issue. All that act says is that the Vendor guarantees that the goods sold match their description, are fit for their purpose, are of acceptable quality and will last for a reasonable time having regard to the price. The rest is argued on its facts, usually at the disputes tribunal

That isn't an excuse though, goods must be durable and designed to be and fit for purpose. As a phone is held in a hand and stored in a pocket, wher there are higher than normal moisture levels, it should be designed for those conditions, and not fail prematurely as a result. I suspect these new phones which now have water proofing in them is a solution to these problems. Not everyone can afford to upgrade a phone every two years, and a phone should easily last 3 years. Personally I have never had problems with my devices charging, nor any corrosion appearing on the contacts.

You could argue the fact however won't get far. The fact is they don't cover moisture and the corrosion could have come from anywhere.

Trouble too with all this is often things can be power surge damaged. This can often degrade or weaken components, but won't necessary fault straight away. Very hard to prove when this is the cause.

The reality is the life cycle of a mobile phone is about 2 years.
