Yeah lets hope the fix promised for september is real...as vodafone UK have publically talked about gps fixes I assume vodafone NZ are aware of the gps issues of this phone.

As for GPS apps, one of the weak parts of android unfortunately.
I sent an email tomtom a couple of days ago asking about their plans for android.
They replied saying they are inundated with requests for tomtom on android.
They said they don't have a date for its release on android.

I guess thats better than saying they have no plans for android at least :)

But yeah tomtom for android would be a big boost to android and I am sure for tomtom. The other GPS apps out there just aren't up to standard really.

Anyway good to see Vodafone bringing in a pretty new phone, well done.
This phone has new surprises each day, they just said that it actually has gorilla glass on it now.

I have more than enough data on the phone, so it's not an issue in the city. I guess it would be an issue in the rurals with poor coverage....but then there's usually only one road at that point anyway and I do have a map. ;-)

I'm just not mentally capable of spending $150 on a GPS app when i can do just as well with a $7.50 paper map....and a couple of minutes at the side of the road either before I start (short journey) or every hour or so (long journey in strange area).

Maybe if I was being paid a $1,000 / hour I could justify the time saved versus the expense.

Well yes google navigator is pretty good even though you have to use a hack to get it working here..

I was thinking of offline navigators.
Google navigator is fine if you dont mind using the data and have reception :)
I tend to go overseas quite a bit and no way im chewing through data navigating with that.

A lot of people would see $150 as a bargain, loads of dedicated gps units still being sold at prices over 300, heck top garmin models and tomtom models are like 700... and thats all they do - gps.

Having seen tomtom on the iphone, it really does work well, I would love to see it on android.
and paper maps?? ewwww :)

Last trip overseas I used Mobile Atlas Creator to download maps I wanted and then used them offline on Brut Maps.

Heh yeah you can do that but I think people on this site lose track of what an average user can do and what they are willing to do..

I can imagine explaining this to someone.
Yes first you need to download the hacked google maps the apk of brut maps and install that.
Then if you want to go offline you need to download this other app and know exactly the area you want to go to (bad luck if your trip changes part way through) and select how much detail you want to save (tile depth etc) then you need to save that into fhe right format and then copy that over to the phone to the right location etc etc and if your plans change and you have to go somewhere else ... hmmm

I mean...yes it can be done of course but its a lot of mucking around. Get a real offline navigator and you have the whole of europe in one mapset and with detail of the roads but not taking a huge amount of room. google naviagator if you want decent detail of the roads in closeup you have to download a huge amount of tiles it will download a massive amount of data too much for this phone that is for sure.

Having come close on a couple of occasions to ordering a SGS from clove I'm glad I held off. I have been waiting until confirmation that the lag and gps issues have been resolved. I can now be confident that if I get a VF SGS and those items don't work I will be able to get it remedied under the CGA with VFNZ.

I will be watching with interest to see how the pricing/plans compare. I was disappointed with the offerings attached to the N1. Parallel importing seems to come in around $NZ900 for the SGS.
I look at iPhone subsidies and wonder why other top flight smartphones don't get similar levels of subsidy.

Edit: and swerving off topic again. I have used Mapdroyd successfully in Oz cities with no data connection. No turn by turn tho'.

Knowing Telecom, it'll be somewhere in the extravagant area of around $1500 dollars Damn them.

It should sell for ~1k if they want people to actually buy it (8gb)
I wonder which firmware they will ship with, it'd be a pity if it was JF3.

Probably at a guess 8gb, thats all mobicity had.
Mobicity has interestingly enough changed to the AT&T Captivate model, which is inferior to the i9000. Hope telecom doesn't get the Captivate.
