Dom007: The girl in Lambton Quay told me today ....

Matt (VFNZ employee) posted in the VFNZ forums today (last night?) saying he had one in his hand and they would be releasing it very soon.

He was responding to a post of mine noting that VFUK was selling Samsung Galaxy S and would be a great addition to the NZ phone line-up.

Paul Brislen mentioned HTC Desire was coming to VF and that didn't happen. I wonder if "The girl in Lambton Quay" has more clout ;)

We are indeed stocking the Galaxy S and it is a beautiful device... very cool.

Not sure of price/timing/etc yet but we'll add it to the line-up of Android devices so we'll have four or five on sale.

The Desire won't be available from us (we're ranging the Nexus instead) but I see Orcon is talking about both the Desire and the Legend.

Droids everywhere. Love it.

This might sound tongue-in-cheek but is a serious question - once VF is selling the GS, will those of us who bought our GS overseas (ordered from Clove UK myself) and who are using their GS on the VF network, will be able to get OTA upgrades through VF? eg when Froyo for GS comes out.

That is indeed good news. Interestingly a couple of weeks ago a guy in the Telecom store on Lambton Quay told me that Telecom was going to offer the Galaxy. As the US proves, I guess it doesn't have to be exclusive to one carrier.

We don't control the OTA updates - that's something Samsung/Google will drive. My best guess would be that it doesn't matter whether you've bought the phone overseas or not.

cheers

Paul

Your phone is a creature of the network. It will get updates from where ever it was going to get updates from. That may be OTA and it may also include downloading them from a Samsung web site (as HTC and Acer - at least) currently do.

HTC devices don't care where you are. HTC does the updating......though you may be in a batch related to the telco you bought it from. You may also have the option of loading their generic ROMs for your device obtainable from their web site (like HTC Magic 32a and some others).

My Google-sourced Nexus Ones update flawlessly  OTA wherever...and whenever.

This is interesting, because i've heard Telecom are testing the 850mhz version of it.

As I understand it the various handsets "calls home" to check for updates. "Home" can be a server provided by the manufacturer or Google. The carrier (eg. VFNZ) or your chosen WiFi connection are just the pipe that connects the handset to home.

I was under the impression, probably mistakenly, that the way to get official Samsung updates was by connecting via Kies? Do you mean that when I downloaded upgrade JM1 via Kies last week, I could have done that another way?

No, you aren't mistaken.  Kies is currently being used by samsung to roll out their updates.
They may choose in the future to use OTA though.
