kiwijunglist: I'm giving away my phone, so I want to revert to a stock rom doesn't need to be VF-NZ specific, but should be 900G modem. Currently I'm in the doc rom with the corrupt kernal, I thought I would flash the kernal fix and then flash stock rom. Has anyone already done some research into this and which stock rom I should go for. The reason to do this is so that future updates can be done for my friend using kies rather than having to use xda to find new roms and use odin.

I had the kernel problem but because I want back to JM9 with a factory reset I didn't have to do anything about the kernel problem on Docs rom. Might as well give your friend Froyo though :)

There was a version of Doc rom and voodoo and quite a few other custom roms that had corrupted kernal, if you were running this version you had to do a special fix to fix the kernal, you couldn't just flash a newer version of the rom, you had to follow some specific steps.

I went to Darky's v5.6 from Doc's JPU without doing anything more than a full factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik. I didn't flash a stock Eclair or anything, just straight to CWM to flash the rom.

Anyway last night I noticed that my Digital Clock Widget didn't update the time of day. And today I see that my Smooth Calendar widget looks like it's got two slightly different sets of information overlayed.

So something didn't go as planned, or there's some bugs in the ROM.

Tomorrow (when I've got my cable) I'll flash JM9 using Odin and then go to Doc's JPX version.

I'd just do the Kies reghack and flash to JP3 - the SRJP3 rom isn't loaded with Vodafone rubbish at all, so is a good-ish vanilla Froyo build with a NZ CSC.

I've got V4 but didn't know it was called "final". I looked to see if there were maybe two versions but no. So I guess I'll stick my hand up :)

The battery drain is really bad. I turned wifi off last night and had 3% battery drain in 8 hours. But if you leave wifi on, expect your battery to practically drain over an 8 hour period.

I'm not sure if it relates to Docs rom or JPU in general. ROM Manager doesn't work well - can't take a backup of your ROM, however CWM has a backup function so that's the work around.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I preferred V9 of the ROM, which was pre JPU.

Lots of things are new in JPU (or since), Market has changed, Google Maps v5 (which is way cool!) but these aren't specific to the ROM version.

What version of Docs ROM are you on, if you're on a customised ROM at all?

Im on the Doc V7.6.2 - JPO based rom but im just downloading the new Docs XXJPX V5.1..

One quick question, what lag fix are you running on these roms ? i tried the NO-RFS STANDARD but was thinking about trying the voodoo fix .. need more speed.

@snowsteve, since you are using 7.6.2 u need to follow the steps to fix the corrupted kernal before going onto the newest doc rom. then use the lagfix in the advanced features cwm menu.

Hey Snowsteve. I wasn't using any lag fix at all. I found them to be responsive without needing to amp it up. The Darky rom I've got on at the moment has Voodoo and I think it's a little too fast. When scrolling through the app drawer it really does get away on you and you over shoot what you're looking for. I'm sure you'd get used to it, but I think it's a bit too much.

As Kiwijunglist says, you'll need to do the fix on the kernel before flashing the latest Doc Rom, or flash back a stock ROM and then get 2e, update.zip and then flash Doc's rom via CWM.

So I finally got brave and rooted with Superoneclick, and then applied the OCLF app (quite proudly and resolutely never used Odin!) and I'm very happy with the results.

Still not happy about not having 2e recovery/CWM, but tbh having Titanium is worth more to me anyway, as if things turned to custard in a big way I'd be inclined to reflash (yes, from Odin I know. . . ) and start from scratch.

I'll wait to see how things pan out with JPX before making the leap. . . .

@neets - still no word from bloodrider re: the VFNZ CSC - will keep you posted on developments there.

Random ravings for the day - my SGS is the first smartphone I've owned, so I'm not prejudiced for/against Apple and the iPhone, but had a chance today to spend an hour playing with a mate's iPhone 4 while he giggled at how cool Swype is.

My impression of iOS is that while it's slick, it seems rather convoluted in how you do things compared to the SGS - there seems to be a lot of clicking and swiping to get to where you want to go, which may well be due to the lack of customization that Android has (and that I probably take for granted).

The retina display is certainly nice, and makes the SGS look very blue, but with both on full brightness, and running Angry Birds, the SGS was hands-down the nicer, more vibrant screen - the reds on the retina display seemed washed out and drab in comparison.

Was a very interested experience!

Man I really want to flash the new XXJPX but need to find time. Luckily the gf is going away tomorrow and only 3.5 days left of work so may get to fit it in somewhere.

No problem. I'm not sure what one you should get - what i did was downloaded the JPE update for my phone as my phone was from Hong Kong and that is what Kies tried to give me. So maybe you should get the 2.2 for your phone's original locale.
My logic for downloading it NOW is simple: if I have to send the phone back under warranty, I'll flash it to jpe first as it was a legit upgrade. If that cures the problem then fine; if it does not it's a hardware issue and off it goes.

As far as frequency goes - I'm not sure. I think that is a function of the modem hardware and cannot be changed and is not part of any rom. Try it and see! the worst that will happen is you will discover the frequency IS changeable and be hailed as a hero (and then can flash it with some other rom), OR you will find it makes no difference and it works as well as that rom was ever going to work.

Just make sure it has 2e recovery on it. Despite what samsung NZ says, it IS an expected and required part of the phone. It is needed to remedy problems with flashing from kies, as stated in the user manual. Samsung NZ seems to be run by incompetents.

What I did have was cwm seemed to be the wrong one for doc's. Didn't have the options that doc said it should. It was the one from darky's. Strange. I tried flashing the cwm that doc said in his instructions - it's just the basic one - and no change.

So, flashing back to a stock rom, THEN flashing the custom rom I want should resolve that?

Flashing the Desire was soo much easier...

The update.zip I've left on my Internal SD is the one from Doc. So I'll just apply that first before I factory rest, wipe cache and dalvik. Then I'll apply his JPX rom. Thanks for letting me know there wasn't any problems from switching one to the other.

And yes, anytime you flash back to stock rom (and you could go JPU) will reset everything. You wouldn't even need to do any wiping of the cache if all you're doing is that. If you go JPU you'll have to use Odin to flash CF-root to get 2e. If you flash say JM9 (Eclair) then you can apply the update.zip file and then flash Doc's ROM.

Oops, almost forgot. Have you rebooted the phone since moving to Doc's rom. I recall once it appeared I didn't have all the CWM options. When I shut the phone down and went back to recovery it was all there.
