there is an option in kies to reinstall/reinitialise the drivers, from memory it's accessed via the top right or top left corner, possibly a right click is involved, but I can't recall the exact details

After my 2nd attempt, I got the driver to install meaning I can use Heimdall.

Has anyone been reading up on the OC/UV threads?  Seems that doing this (changing the kernel to one that's compatible, then setting the OC/UV via a new app) provides a much better battery experience.

Here' are the links.  Yes I know, I'm going against my own wish to see links as a hyperlink rather than dumped into the post - shoot me!

Some of the people on the Doc thread are now including their OC/UV settings in their signature which is handy if you want to start out there and tweak further as need be.

I bought my phone the day before I had surgery, and spent the next weekish around home, or just out for short periods of time, using wifi at home.

Once I took it away from my network it seems HSDPA stays on constantly, and the battery drains faster than 10% per hour. Is there any way to tell it to stop doing this?
If I add another APN full of blank details and change it to that battery life is amazing, but that's not really a satisfying way to do it everytime I want to use data.

I'm guessing it might have something to do with the 'background data' setting? But even sitting the phone there not doing anything, I see the green upload arrow light up once per 10ish seconds, what is it uploading every 10 seconds?

I tried turning off background data, but it didn't seem to make that much difference, and turning off background data then makes the market not work, and just like changing APN all the time, changing this setting each time I want to use the market is unacceptable.

Is there anyway to stop it having the HSDPA constantly connected, and only to use it when it needs to? For example polling for my emails each 15 minutes, and using HSDPA when I go into an app that requires internet, for example the browser, or facebook, and then timing out quickly after I have stopped using it.

Even my old Nokia 6120C handled this better.

I use APNDROID to turn on/off APN data as required. JuiceDefender is another program.

Anyone else running doc's v6.2 JPY rom? I'm having trouble with asphalt disappearing after I reboot and I have to reinstall it.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

I saw your question.  I don't know what asphalt is.

Good to see you've been reading up on OC/UV threads. I've been running SetiRon's OC/UV kernel for about 3 ROMS now. You can really extend your battery life a decent amount if you can run stable with some decent underclocking at each frequency level. Not all Galaxy S's are exactly the same, so a particular user's oc/uv settings may run stable for them, but cause FC's or freezes for another user, even with the same particular custom rom. Quite interesting this particular part of the custom rom development

After spending a good portion of the afternoon catching up on Doc's thread, then finishing reading the threads I posted above, I've just now finished setting my OC/UV values (after installing the v69 Voodoo kernel).  Now to see what happens.

I really don't know what the settings ought to be.  I am just following someone who I trust on the XDA forums - who's from Aus, on Optus.  Gotta start somewhere :-)

Those are good settings to start off with Neets. I went with a -25 at 1200mhz and then -50 for the rest. I asked someone in the Captivate forums as to what to start off so went with what he gave me. Keen to see the battery life goes after that. Mine is normally pretty good anyway, but always keen to try new tweaks etc to get the most from our phone!

Hi all,

I'm an android noob and just recently got an imported Galaxy S. I've been running into a few issues, specifically with the Market. It seems that I can't access many of the applications on the market. For instance, when I search for Appbrain, it doesn't appear in the search results. And I got the email link to Appbrain but I get a "requested item cannot be found" error. I've also tried following various links on appbrain for apps such as Need For Speed Shift, Google Goggles, etc. and I get the same error. I have managed to download several apps like Angry Birds Seasons (the original Angry Birds didn't show up on search results) but this was only after doing a factory reset.

It comes with a few SingTel apps, so I'm assuming it's a Singapore phone. Also, it's still on Android 2.1 as Kies shows no updates available for the phone.

Any ideas?

I've heard that some countries block certain apps.  Others who have spoken about apps being blocked have had people provide them the *.apk files and they've been able to install them on their phones.

I'm not sure how you feel about flashing your phone.  Basically changing the firmware via a method other than Kies.  I say that becuase 1.  You get to Froyo and 2. you often get a Multi CSC which will likely give you a KOR product code or something else.  Even though I've got an Optus phone, my product code is KOR.  I have no problem with the market at all.

The ROM (firmware) I'm running right now doesn't even have a CSC.  First time that's happened :)  Phone runs just fine without a CSC, though I'd feel better if I could get my OPS one in there.

Just came across this link to Picasa that holds a bunch of wallpapers suitable for the SGS.  Plenty there for the red blooded male.  No, I don't need to know which is your favourite Tongue out
