Gordy7:

With all this excitement on GZ about the S8+ I decided to order one on Monday directly from Samsung.

The good news and surprise is that the dispatch email showed that I managed to get a 256GB memory card.

The disappointing news is that Samsung only put part of my full delivery address I provided on the package.... Street and postal code.

As a result NZ Post has my package out on Rural Post joy ride in another district (and incorrect post code area)  looking for a street that does not exist in that area.

I guess it will turn up in a day or two...

I used to get that because NZ Post insisted my house was in a place it isn't!

Lol that sucks, I preordered with Pbtech still haven't got the phone,

For $16 they sent it economy 3 days, Hopefully delivered tomorrow.

Pretty disappointing, Compared with the Note7 I preordered with Samsung arrived on release day.

I'm going to recommend the folio case I got from Otterbox.

It's a little bulky and does hide the beautiful design, but it provides good drop protection and there is a magnetically closing flap to protect the screen from damage. Also the leather outer looks nice.

I found an 8K video on line of Peru. OMG. The S8+ screen with that.....

Picked my pre-ordered black S8 up from Noel Leeming a couple of days ago. The exchange went like this;

Me : Where's the 256GB card?
Salesman: Oh there doesn't seem to be one.
Me : But I told you when I ordered it that the only reason I was pre-ordering it was because of the card. We even noted it on the receipt.
Okay. I'll order you one. Will be here in a couple of days.

How's this for annoying.

Set contacts to last name first name. Works fine.

Enter messages app and hit contacts to find someone to message. Now listed first name last name. But only in messages. It does not carry over the setting from contacts and it offers no setting of its own to do the same thing.

Grrrr.

Enjoying the s8+. Going back to my s6 feels like I'm going back to a 3.5" screen yet the phone feels only a tad larger in hand.

I put the blue Samsung clear view case on mine, works as I want so happy enough with that case. Still loving the phone guess my S6 is going to have to be put up for sale. Put the 256gb sd card in my Surface pro as will never use it up on my phone hell never even used half my 32gb on my S6.

I just can't get over the battery life in this thing, I am getting over 4 hours of screen time (which i never have been able to get on a phone) and over 16 hours standby.  That is with everything on.

Yes, I've been impressed too.

My S8+ turned up this afternoon. Charged up really quickly from about 60% to 100%

Installed a system update and used Samsung Smart Switch to migrate my Moto G3 to the S8+.

Most copied apps worked straight away. Some required an updated login and password.

Really easy. Had to use a file manager to copy across all the photos I wanted on the S8+.

Generally all pretty slick and fast.

So here it is.... out with the old and in with the new:

My apps just downloaded when I entered my Google account details. Does Smart Switch do something different?

Some Google account stuff did download.

Think I used Smart Switch because it was in some Samsung instructions somewhere...

I got interrupted with the migration and linked up the two phones with Smart Switch and just carried them with me.

According to this article, your Google account does not migrate everything and it is better to use Smart Switch.

Started setting my S8 up yesterday. Used my Google account and Smart Switch and most things transferred smoothly from my S6. A few of the things I do regularly on the S6 require root so I don't know how long I'll be able to resist on the 8. I wish Google would allow permissive access to things like mobile data and airplane mode toggling from third party apps. Then I would have no use for root at all.
Fingerprint scanner is a pain, so will be relying on trusted devices and Iris scan most of the time. And wow, what a fingerprint magnet the back of the (black) phone is. Perhaps the gold colour, the same as my S6 would have been a better choice. But probably moot when it's in a cover anyway. Does look nice though, sitting on the coffee table all black and shiny (how shallow is that!).
