Chalk up another bootlooping 5X. Bought mine through PB Tech, but going through LG and its going to take up to 2 days to check the IMEI. I'm hoping PB Tech didn't import them, but in any case it has a 2 year warranty so I guess worst case its gonna have to be PB that refund or replace.

Such a bummer - as I like everything about the 5X - fantastic value... well except for it crapping itself of course! All I can say, is thank god for google pics backup - a life saver.

Any suggestions on a good replacement for below $400?

You probably won't find a decent replacement for under $400.. but have a look at the Nokia 6.1 (2018) which is $400-500 depending on where/what model you get.

I loved my 5X too. After it bootlooped I replaced it with a Vodaone V8 which I really like. The V8 runs apps better due to the larger RAM and the only thing I miss are the regular Android updates.

You can get parallel imported ones for under $400 - just check out Pricespy. I too am considering the 6.1 as a replacement - and the 7 plus as it happens. Waiting to see both in a Spark store so I can have a play and make a final decision. Or are there other retailers stocking these yet?

Edit: Spelling! Also - had another look at PriceSpy and I should have said "could get them for $400" - looking harder now. $499 from Spark is worth it IMHO since its a big retailer

Also have a look at the Nokia 8 if you want last year's flagship for $600ish via PI. (I replaced my N5X with a Nokia 8, been great so far)

Never had any bootloop issues with my 5X (brought from einfo so parallel imported), however am now starting to look at upgrading/replacement and the new Nokia's and the Xiaomi mi A1 seem to be the only decent bang for buck options with pure android (Android One). Such a shame the Google Pixel range is so over priced and restricted (no sd slot etc).

I replaced a dying battery Nexus 5X with a Nokia 8 which you can get from parallel imported for like $580. Stock android and promised OS/security updates. Only downside is if you want custom ROMs the bootloaders on all Nokia's are locked so far.

The Nokia 8 is slightly bigger than the N5X but it's not too bad. For the price you can't go wrong with the Nokia 8.

I replaced my wifes n5x with an A1 about 6 months back. Been great phone. Pretty big though, camera is so so but mostly on par with n5x. Heaps of battery and nice finish. Those nokias do look interesting though

Have any of you had any luck arguing with LG about getting a refund, instead of a fix, for a bootlooped 5X?

I sent in my Nexus 5X to LG (FoneFix), with a note stating I want a refund, not a fix. I won't bore you with the whole story but it has taken 6 weeks of them utterly mucking me round (with continuous chasing up by me), for them to only decide to refuse a refund and only offer a motherboard replacement.

Fonefix have confirmed to me its a motherboard replacement and that the new motherboard will eventually suffer the same problem.

I have tried agruing with them and quoted the CGA saying its a major proven fault and their solution is just a temporary fix and backed this up with the fact they have had settled lawsuits in the USA, other retailers offering full refunds here, etc, etc. But basically they are refusing to acknowledge bootlooping is even a common problem.. here is a quote from their email to me "if there is a design fault on the product it should’ve occurred on its early life."

What a joke. I guess that is what happens when dealing with an overseas call centre.

I bought the phone of PB Tech and brought it up with them, but they were just awaiting LG's response, so they will be no help either.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you had any luck with arguing for the full refund from LG or PB Tech?

I have asked for LG New Zealand's contact details, and will give them a go as there is a small chance they may be more receptive. Otherwise I have to decide if I just give up and sell the repaired phone on TradeMe or whether I take them to small claims to prove a point and hopefully set a precedent for other poor saps.

BTW thanks for the recommendations on new phones - I think I will go with a Nokia 6 2018 for price reasons.

I guess I was just lucky that they decided to refund me. I don't know if the retailer made any difference (I bought from The Warehouse Stationary) to the decision. I do know that they sent my phone to Australia on LG's orders and the decision came back from Australia.

I guess it depends when your phone starts bootlooping.

Mine started bootlooping after 2.5 years, so I think it was pretty reasonable to get the motherboard replaced (for free) - ultimately it only needs to last another 1.5 years then I'd be happy. (4 years for a phone is pretty exceptional I'd say)

In my opinion it is unreasonable to expect a full refund if you are over 2 years from time of purchase (and that a free repair is reasonable), as clearly the phone has served you well, and will serve you well again with the new motherboard.

Mine has lasted a bit over 1.5 years. Its also the fact that it is highly likely LG had already become aware of the problem/flaw when they sold me the phone, and their fix is only a temporary one with the same known flaw. Its all dishonest.

Also, there is inconsistencies in their policy as plenty of people have had refunds. LG not even admitting there is a problem/flaw when the rest of the world knows there is one (and they have already settled legal challenges, etc, etc) just smacks of a company who doesn't care about their customers and will do whatever they can to weasel their way out of doing the right thing until they are legally challenged.

Well mine died too now, think it's probably 2 years old ish.

I guess the bang for buck you got at that price point was too good to be true.

Welcome to the club of ex-Nexus 5X users. I really liked the phone and would still be using min if it hadn't developed this fault.
