yeah my bro got his HTC Desire for free I think ion contract in the UK for 40 quid a month. No doubt we get ripped off here - lack of competition. same probably goes for ISPs etc.

Well yeah it basically does come down to our size probably, its not an excuse for them but it means we only have a few players and they can basically do what they want and we don't have much choice, no doubt at all we are ripped off compared to these countries.

I mean they aren't even subsidising it are they on contract?
You can bring in the galaxy for their subsidised price yourself and in fact for 100 more you can get the 16 gig version delivered to your door..

Interesting that vodafone nz only got the 8 gig version, vodafone uk got the 16 gig one too..
another important difference.

Not sure why you think we aren't subsidising it on contract. The website clearly shows we are. We subsidise all kinds of handsets for on contract customers.

$850 from Clove and that's with an extra 8GB card as a freebie.

That whopping $100 VF subsidy really is laughable plus you'll be stuck on some 24 month plan at an extortionate rate, come off it

I was meaning that I bought my galaxy s with no contract for less than vodafone nz are selling theirs on contract. I assume you get them at far better rates than I do so I am wondering why your "subsidy" isn't as good as an individual can get it for off contract..

I guess I just don't understand how a big company that obviously has a bit of buying power can't match the buying power of one person, obviously something I'm missing.
I really can't see the incentive to buy it on contract with vodafone in this case. With the iphones sure, they were really subsidised.

Depending on the VF Plan you select you can get a $400 subsidy... I wouldn't say that was bad???

But I do understand your point that you got one cheaper by bringing it in yourself from Clove (did it include GST or did you manage like most not to pay that?), than if you were to go down to a VF store now and buy one outright.

Yeah, if you saddle yourself with an $80/month plan over 24 months so you'll have spent nearly $2K by the end of that and more than paid the 'subsidy' yourself.

I just don't get why there are so many people willing to defend these rip off prices, it's those that don't question it that allow it to continue by blindly just taking one for the team

Or, could it perhaps be as someone in another thread has pointed out, that the customer sees the value in having the plan (voice, TXT and data) and would pay more for that alone and that having the discount off the price of the handset up front means they get a smartphone sooner than they otherwise would...

It's just a thought because while you see no value in going on account and paying $80/month for a plan, there are plenty of customers who do see the value.

And on that point - there are a large variety of plans, pricing and options (including Prepay, Sim only, Post Pay) that cover all the bases. You can buy the phone outright, you can buy one on a plan, you can buy one from someone else. Nobody's locked in, nobody's forced to buy a handset at those prices.

The choice is entirely up to the customer.

I would happily pay more to buy my phone locally rather than overseas. You only need one problem and have to send your phone back to realise the advantages of having local support.

I just wish Vodafone or whoever would bring them to market sooner. I have had my HTC Desire since April.

On the page for the galaxy s they state a $100 subsidy so lets concentrate on that for now.

Now its one thing for vodafone nz to have a higher price than everyone else for out of contract sales as you talk about "buy one outright"

but its another thing when vodafone nz are selling it with their $100 subsidy and its still more expensive than buying it elsewhere.

unlocked-mobiles sell it for 330 pounds, thats what 700 dollars nzd, add 30 for postage etc, perhaps you get stung for gst but even if you do.. its going to work out less or even the same. I am pretty sure you can source then even cheaper from asia now too and that includes the 16 gig models.

Now that is one person buying it retail and paying freight etc and for one unit.

Vodafone NZ will obviously pay far less freight per unit and buy it at far less cost so its an absolute joke that they can't even beat the price of other retailers with their subsidy included isn't it?

another important difference.

Prices in NZ are higher for pretty much everything due to our remote location and small population. Those aren't necessarily bad things, either, as they make for a very pleasant lifestyle here.

But the price we pay for our paradise....is some stuff costs more than it does in the (relative) human ant-hills of Europe, North America and Asia.

The Smart plan that's $40/month - which entitles the phone user to benefit from the 3GB data promo - represents excellent value. I'm talking to my pre-pay daughter about *saving* herself some money and moving on to such a plan with her smart phone (Nexus One).

update: sorry that might have been harsh.. but way too many people jump to that defence and in this case it just isn't valid at all not even remotely.
