I'm also decided to get one of these - wonder when the parallel importers will have them? :)

Thanks for the video link, just heading there now to check it out!

RE: Trackpad - I don't really miss it, but there is the occasional use-case that pops up where it would be welcome.

Ordered it from clove, based on the price and the good feedback everyone here seems to be giving them it seemed like a no brainer

At the moment its sitting at 444 GBP so just over NZ $950 including shipping, just hoping I don't get snapped for the gst when it gets here.

Probably 15%, too.

Also be aware of the new bio-security and documentation charges that can add about $50...."just because".

Argh thanks for the heads up. Suppose I would gladly pay the extra, the build quality and the sheer awesomeness look more than worthy of the extra dough.

We are born, we pay taxes and we die. Ahh... The certainties of life.

By the way, anything under a grand NZD is exempt from taxes isn't it?

Yes - anything over NZ$400 is subject to GST. Plus there may be other charges. See here: http://www.customs.govt.nz/importers/Private+importers/Customs+charges.htm#top

However, there seem to be plenty of people who have imported phones that haven't had to pay GST. Think you should budget for it though :(

No. They (Customs) tended not to charge unless the GST was $50 or more (so base price would be $400 *including* shipping charges).

With GST going up, that $50 GST is levied on an item costing $333 (*1.15 = $383 which includes $50 of GST).

So for things to not attrach GST on import, the lid sinks to $333 from $400 on October 1st.

I know this $50 thing is a rule of thumb and things often slip through that should have attacted it...but didn't. I suspect there may be a moving 'target' depending on the ability of Customs to process stuff. If there is a big backlog, perhaps they let stuff through at higher thresholds just to keep it all moving.

Generally, I thought the legal position was that GST is always payable...whether they collected it themselves or not. I haven't checked that in years...so I may be wrong.

Thanks for your response guys.

At the end of the day, it is highly likely it's still going to be cheaper than buying it from Parallel Imported - they definitely inflate prices during the initial launch.

If I remember rightly from one of the early Desire threads, those who chose the Royal Mail delivery option when purchasing from Clove seemed to avoid GST more often that not while those who took the courier option all got hit for it.
