I don't think my usage patterns will ever allow the kind of endurance you get, but I think I can say that my use was fairly average for me. If I ever use the nav apps, I always plug the phone into the car charger so I suspect that I should ignore that use because it would actually make a net gain to endurance.

I agree, a lot of the time my phone is just sitting there and 60hours is just unnecessary to be honest, I do listen to quite a bit of music and wifi sleep is on "never", I don't use many really power hungry features, and I put it in flight mode while asleep. It really makes you think that companies can make these phone have good battery life and make them go fast, but instead they don't. It amazes me how great this phone really is when using roms made by some smart people(Like Doc) as a part time thing for free and Samsung releases horrible software as stock, think about how many more SGS's they would sell if the got the software right! A no brainer if you ask me. Let's hope the don't screw up the SGS2 that bad.

My hope as well. But I'm happy that 4 months of SGS ownership have resulted in probably 10 days of frustration - the rest has been highly pleasurable and this device is head and shoulders above the iPhone 3GSes we have in our household. This slightly euphoric feeling must be how the Apple iPhone owners felt when the iP3 was released.

Nice that it's our turn now.

Tonight's test...

I intend to leave wifi switched on overnight in addition to data to see what the drop is. In theory, the data will be minimal as will the wifi so battery drain should be no more than 11% again, but tomorrow will tell. Battery is nearly charged (94% according to SGS Tools) so it won't be long before I start the run-down again.

Exciting stuff.

Checked the noLED battery usage (insignificant) but the notifications do turn the screen on for 30 seconds so there's a nudge of high drain whenever that happens, so I'm going to set noLED to sleep between 12.01am to 6.30am to make it more economical. And as an aside, the screen used ~70% of the battery, with phone and wifi next (can't remember the figures but much less).

I'm going to do a little research on the screen's high power draw in case there's a tweak or two but I have my doubts that I can make any significant saving there without the screen being off practically all the time.

So, more to report tomorrow. Watch this space...

Your OEM battery show up yet?

Yeah using it now. Going to wait a few cycles before judging. So far it seems the same as my original. I think my phone either has higher drain because its an early manufactured one or because I'm just a super heavy user. My screen drain is always over 90%

Yeah, it's a little tougher for me to gain some respect for my phone with an Iphone 4 in the household, it always gets the attention, bit of a show off if you ask me ;)

On the subject of Iphones I just noticed how heavily discounted they are. For spending $80 a month you can get the Iphone 4 for $200, where I spend around the same amount monthly and it only got me $80 off my phone.

We'll get in trouble with the Off-Topic police if we're not careful...

I have a feeling the iP4 has a deeper subsidy because the plan doesn't cover some stuff (but don't quote me on it). So a user will spend extra each month to get the equivalent services/data as non-iP4 folk and thus they'll be paying for it anyway.

As I said, don't quote me.

So how is your SGS's battery life? (Just to keep it on topic kinda...)

That high screen drain is actually the achilles heel of the SGS, stunning images notwithstanding. I will try to find out whay it's such a battery hog considering OLED is meant to be a very power-efficient tech.

It's actually been pretty good lately, on 73% at the moment after 26 hours. Havent used it a whole lot but im happy with that.

That's darn good wazz. Seems that phone is capable of very good battery duration with a good ROM or at least a decent kernel. So really, the SGS is finally living up to its potential. I hope Sammy are learning from this how to get their kit working well OOTB.

And here is the Battery News, read by R2D2...

Overnight drain was a paltry (for me) 8% so that's confirmed that the fix has taken. From ~40% down to 8% is a great result and the phone is back to the sort of duration I had prior to flashing JPY.

So this is the last of the battery bulletins. I trust that somebody else will get some value from them.

Lastly, the 3% difference between my wifi-off test and this wifi-on version, while seemingly arse-about-face, appears to be down to there being virtually no notifications received overnight.

For me idle drain has never been a huge issue, it's just using the phone that drains it rapidly. I probably have my screen on at least 3 hours a day reading ebooks or browsing the web.

So I just got myself one of these phones and so far I am like....hmmm, I miss my Iphone3Gs. Being new to Android it seems like the marketplace is quite a mess, my phone wont sync with Exchange 2010 SP1 (apparently I need to delete all my ActiveSync Policies, sync phone then recreate them) and I seem to have a whole lot of guff installed which I think is pointless.

I am willing to give this a fair go though but not having the time to go back through 2 or 3 hundred posts can anyone give me a quick run down on what you might normally do to one of these things when you get it straight out of the box. Any and all tips or pointers appreciated.

Most of us run custom roms from XDA Forums. It takes quite a bit of reading but there is very low risk of bricking your phone if flashing it. If you just want to know what to do to tweak it without flashing then I'm sure there are a lot of people here who can help with that. The cool thing about the custom roms is that they are super fast and get rid of a lot of the stock bloatware. If you use something like Doc's Romkitchen (romkitchen.org) you can cook a rom with only the components of your choosing.

Doc's Rom Thread contains a lot of information for a first time flasher, post #3 probably contains the best steps for installation as well as an FAQ

If you just want to run the latest stock rom you should be able to update using Kies. What are you having trouble doing that you could do on your 3GS?

If you want to remove the bloatware on a stock rom you will need to gain Root access (look up z4root or superoneclick root on XDA) and then you can use something like Titanium Backup to uninstall stuff.

If you don't like the TouchWiz Launcher you can try out other ones without rooting by grabbing one from the market, LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, Zeam, and GoLauncher are some of the better ones.

As for Market you can now install apps straight from the web to your phone using market.android.com
