ok thanks for the quick reply. I have installed a different launcher thing and it is already a bit better. This custom rom business sounds interesting however Im not sure my boss would be stoked if I bricked a $1000 phone so will have to have a think about this.

Is there any other software apart from Kies that can be used to sync files etc as Kies seems to crash all the time on my laptop (Windows 7 32bit)

The thing that I am really missing from my iphone is the double tap on home button to bring up itunes controls when screen is locked so I can skip tracks easily etc. Anyway to do this?

Oh, and I would really prefer a different color background but it is usually black. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change it?

Being new to Android it seems like the marketplace is quite a mess, my phone wont sync with Exchange 2010 SP1 (apparently I need to delete all my ActiveSync Policies, sync phone then recreate them) and I seem to have a whole lot of guff installed which I think is pointless.

I am willing to give this a fair go though but not having the time to go back through 2 or 3 hundred posts can anyone give me a quick run down on what you might normally do to one of these things when you get it straight out of the box. Any and all tips or pointers appreciated.

I'm curious why you "just got myself one of these phones" without doing some cursory research into it? $900 isn't exactly impulse purchase territory unless your name is Graeme Hart.

People here will be happy to help you get the most from your purchase if you appear to be genuine. But for some, the iPhone is definitely the best way to go. Perhaps that's you?

Fair enough question....I didnt pay for it, work did. I have the (sometimes) fun job of researching new gadgets to see if they have a place in our organisation (I also have a Windows 7 Phone here to play with which I think I am quite liking but I dont use facebook so a lot of it seems pointless).

Im not an apple fanboy and am willing to give this Android thing a go but I just need a little help and a few pointers in the right direction. I like my iphone cause it is very intuitive and easy to use but I know this doesnt necessarily mean its the best solution and that maybe my braincells need a bit of stretching.

Ok?

The problem with this phone is it is crap out of the box, you're going to have to at the very least upgrade it to android 2.2. Pretty sure Exchange doesnt work on 2.1, only 2.2 up. If kies is crashing you're going to have to get familiar with Odin, everything you need is on xda-developers.

Having an open mind will certainly allow you to have a better experience than going in with "this doesn't work like iOS so it sucks". And whether or not you intended that, it's how your opening post comes across.

However, I'm willing to cut you some slack but suggest that you do some reading before you ask questions. There's a lot of info in this thread, some say too much, and it can be daunting to read. But the last 50 pages will be a good start. XDA Developers is a site with many topics that will impact your SGS experience, so it's highly recommended. Join the discussions on the issues that are affecting you and offer the solutions you have discovered in return for the help you receive and you'll thrive.

A word of warning, (since the SGS isn't yours) - you will void the phone's warranty by rooting it. Your employer may not be too happy about that. He or she may be looking for a perfect out of the box experience. I can assure you that this phone cannot deliver that. It's worth getting that straight right at the beginning. There are other Android phones that may well deliver that OOTB perfection you seek.

Having said that, the SGS I have is superior in every way to our 3Gs iPhones at home. In the end, your decision will be made on the experience. Embrace the change, and you'll be rewarded. If not, then you'll always find things to negate the experience and frankly, life's too short to stick with something that leaves you disappointed.

The stock music player controls appear in the notification bar at the top of the screen. You don't need to do anything when the screen is locked other than drag the CD icon down the screen to reveal the controls. Different to iOS, but probably easier to use?

But YMMV. Give it a try...

You learn new things every day about the phone as well for example, I installed the new version of Kies on the PC at a place I do Volunteer work as I did not want to use their dial up and I am use to using Kies to do the Tethering for the internet on the pc and version 2.0 has no option for doing this.

So after surfing the net on dial up for about an hour (pages with photos etc take ages to load on dialup) on how to do it under version 2.0 I found out (on the vodafone NZ site actually) how I should of been doing it all along under the Tethering options in the Wireless and network settings.

I have not Rooted my phone and perfer not to at the moment maybe when I have a newer model or the warrenty runs out it will be an option.

You can change the background image by pressing the menu button from the homescreen and selecting Wallpaper (may be slightly different depending on Launcher used)

I never use Kies for transferring files, I think if you have USB Debugging enabled you can just mount the SD Card as a drive on your PC. To enable USB Debugging go to:
Menu > Settings > Applications > Development - Tick USB debugging
There is probably another way to do this, I just use this method.

ok thanks for your replies guys. If it is as you say and these phones are only really useful when flashed then I am up against a bit of a brick wall with this voiding the warranty, obviously not good from a corporate use point of view. Ill have to mull this over for a while but inbetween the read the last 50 pages, flashing roms, etc etc Im afraid this ones going in the when I have some spare time box under my desk.

Dont get me wrong, I appreciate the help but this just doesnt seem ready for prime time yet (at least in the space that I operate in).

If you go to Menu > Settings > Wireless and Network > USB Settings you can set it to what you want it to do when connected to USB or get it to ask you what you want it to do each time you plug it in.

The calendar/contacts/email will sync easy with an account you have setup exhcnage/hotmail/gmail etc.

I am running 2.2 which if you phone does not have it is available via Kies to flash as a normal upgrade for the phone.
Flashing to 2.2 is not Rooting the phone so you will be covered by Warrenty.

finally theres a video editor available for free on the samsung site , lets u edit and put background music on videos and pics etc version 1 yet .works ok

Absolutely agree - the iPhone 4 is the only choice, especially given the number of enterprise-apps available. I don't know that Android will ever dominate in this area, and I'm not sure it would ever want to.

I reckon the one app you absolutely must buy is Tasker. This app illustrates the kind of thing that Apple will never let you do, but on android it lets you make the phone your own. Essentially you can set up actions to be carried out based on various triggers to automate the phone to your liking.

For example, with the iphone I was often putting the phone into and out of silent mode when at work or in the evenings, and the physical switch for this was great. Initially I didn't like that the SGS didn't have a silent switch, with tasker I have the phone automatically put the phone into and out of silent mode at the appropriate times.

Similarly, when using the iphone to play music when biking or in the car I typically had to manually start the music, and set the volume levels depending on where the output was going. With tasker it automatically starts in the car at the appropriate volume level when I plug it in, and stops when I unplug it. Similarly it auto starts at a different volume level when using the headset. SMS messages are read out using text to speech when in either of these modes.

There are tons of different ways to use Tasker (there is a wiki with common recipes that is worth looking at)

Tasker is pretty great but it requires a lot of geekery to get it to do what you want. it's also available for any Android device, many of which are a lot better than the SGS out of the box.

I think if you manage to upgrade to a newer 2.2.1 build using Kies then a stock rom might be bearable.
