lokhor: Tasker is pretty great but it requires a lot of geekery to get it to do what you want. it's also available for any Android device, many of which are a lot better than the SGS out of the box.

I think if you manage to upgrade to a newer 2.2.1 build using Kies then a stock rom might be bearable.

I imagine it would be a nightmare trying to update multiple phones with kies. Would be better off just doing it all with odin, only a couple mins per phone.

It'd be nice if as part of a contract Vodafone or Telecom could update them all for you.

Think I might give Docs ROM a crack tonight. What Base ROM, CSC, modems and kernels are recomended as giving the best performance here in New Zealand.

Currently running Darkys 9.2...

Hey meeekael. Have a look at my signature for what I'm running. I choose the default XEU for the CSC. You get a whole pile more Samsung Apps with XEU. Not that I've bothered with any of them, but you might find some there you like.

I'm running the Doc rom in my signature but that has been replaced with JS5(Too lazy to upgrade), I'm using the TNZ CSC for Telecom XT and Speedmod(K13A). Seems to work all fine and dandy, I'm sure the newer Doc Rom (JS5) would provide better performance and would do fine, CSC is really dependant on whether your Voda or XT(VNZ or TNZ). I think Speedmod is more aimed at stability compared to Voodoo but have only ever used Speedmod, and it is recommended.

Haha! There seems to be a way to get the dmesg thingee to work after all. Here's the link from XDA explaining how to do it. I think I'll give it a whirl over the weekend. Might put that Skin thing on first so I don't waste all my sparse patience on SDK and have nothing left for the hour it'll probably need to get a perfect application.

EDIT: Reading further on it seems it's the logcat that replaces the dmesg. Ok, if you're interested start from the link provided and then continue to the next page as there conversation continues.

The problem with this phone is it is crap out of the box, you're going to have to at the very least upgrade it to android 2.2. Pretty sure Exchange doesnt work on 2.1, only 2.2 up. If kies is crashing you're going to have to get familiar with Odin, everything you need is on xda-developers.

Exchange worked fine for me on 2.1.

I don't think my usage patterns will ever allow the kind of endurance you get, but I think I can say that my use was fairly average for me. If I ever use the nav apps, I always plug the phone into the car charger so I suspect that I should ignore that use because it would actually make a net gain to endurance.

i can back up Shrapnels battery life performance with my current config. i would also class my usage as light to average -

right now the phone is at 64hours uptime with 13% battery left.

this is about 30mins voice calls, 8 hours wifi use for browsing and syncing, 5hours screen on (which is about 74% of total battery use)

i have wifi set to sleep when screen off, and i have all radios disabled when i dont need them, using switchpro to toggle. i also try to maintain "background data" to off, and sync off, i manually sync once a day or so.

i also do not use "auto brightness", i lock the brightness to 20% all day every day, and use switchpro to toggle from 20% to 50% and 80% for those occasional moments in bright sun where you might need a bit more visibility. but otherwise no point stressing the OLED out i feel with auto brightness pumping up the voltage constantly.

auto-rotate also almost always disabled, no point having it constantly polling in your pocket right.

this is all using darky's v9.2, which is based on JS3 not JS5, and the UGJL2 modem

when i use the phone more moderately (ie, sync/backgound data on, occasional GPS navigation, lots of browsing, and some gaming) battery lift drops to about 40hours, this ties in with R2D2's performance.

so its good to see a bit of stability in the performance of these roms, especially darky's build versus Doc's, which im sure people have debated alot before.

so performance may actually improve further upon switching to JS5, which im looking forward to.

I would like to know if it's possible to easily get the NZ VFNZ APN's as I flashed the latest ultimate and despite having a large APN list, my connections to internet and sms aren't working, though I had a feeling there was something you were supposed to do to get it setup (Some wizard to run)?

I don't have a voda galaxy s, and i also thought that the apn list included all of the nz networks, however all the apns are available in the stickied post in the android forum here:

pop them in manually. also recommend getting apn backup (free) from the market to backup your apns, so after flashing, just load up the backup file and youre golden :-)

That's strange - I've never had to do anything with Doc's ROMs to get a 3G connection working; if in doubt, try using the VNZ CSC rather than XEU etc - the big APN list should be enough, but APN settings are part of the CSC, so it's worth a shot.

Sorry networkn - I'm not sure how Darky's ROM's work (it's been a long time since I dabbled), but with Doc's, when you cook a ROM in the kitchen, you can specify the CSC (Country Specific Code), which is essentially a bunch of files identifying your country/network - one of the files is an .xml containing all the APN settings for the network (in our case Vodafone NZ, hence the VNZ CSC).

Have you confirmed that you're using the correct modem for a Vodafone device? I know through personal experience that if you flash an 850Mhz modem on a phone expecting a 900Mhz one you go nowhere fast.

Have you actually confirmed that the APN setting are present and correct?

I didn't specify a csc but I'll try and find out what csc is included. The modem hasn't changed in the last 6 roms I have flashed.
