Hi Salty.  Fancy meeting you here.  Never picked you for a fellow geek.   No tolling mate, long long time lurker however.  Only trolling I do is in my boat out behind the bar hunting for wet critters with long pointy beaks.  As for my presence here I could just be being a geek in my spare time you know.Laughing

How good is the IR blaster on S4. I've given up trying to use the S3 as a reliable RC via Wireless it's not very reliable. Does it just work out of the box or is it fiddly?

Mine has arrived this morning. So some quick observations from me:

The Black Mist back cover is about 60% black, and 40% mirror finish stripes on mine. It's a much more reflective surface than I had thought even though I knew it was going to be gloss. From afar is seems darker but up close it's more silver than black in my opinion.

In real life usage it is marginally lighter than the S3 but i'd never notice it unless I had one in each hand to compare.

It looks very much like my S3 and my partner didn't even notice it was the new phone until I told her. She's not particularly observant of such things but still, it's not a head turner or anything.

The screen is a step up from the S3, for sure. Brighter and sharper etc. No surprises there. I'll check blackness differences between them tonight.

It works fine on my S3 desktop dock. Although being slightly thinner means it has very slightly more backwards lean on it if it isn't in a case.

Call quality is as good as anything else top tier. Apparently the clarity was slightly better than my S3 but that could have been for any number of reasons including my unscientific testing.

Touchwiz has never been my favourite so Nova Launcher is my benchmark and it does seem smoother. Transitions seem instant and lag is minor although that might change towards the end of the day as more apps are running in the background.

The speaker is much the same. Adequate sound levels but not wining any awards either.

I haven't tried headphone or camera quality yet. Perhaps later in the week.

I think if the remote control works out of the box that might be my deal maker

I've been using it on mine since I got it - brilliant with my LG TV! I'd be careful not to update the WatchOn app though, when I did that it broke the app for me and I had to rollback to the older version. I'm using it at a distance of about 5-6m from my TV without any issues whatsoever, so seems very reasonable to me (the HTC One remote range seems the same).

I brought mine from Telecom in Riccarton Mall yesterday afternoon and the guy said they had had very little interest in them so both colours were in stock

@hershawl thats interesting, I went to NL's in St Lukes on Saturday afternoon to have a look at the S4 and whilst they had about 10 demo phones they had sold out early morning (or so he said)

Apparently the demo phones are never sold which is just wasteful as I could use one that is used no problem

Thanks NZtech. Good to know it has been reliable for you might have to sell the S3 soon then. How about bluetooth connectivity in the car does it pick up contacts/music without issues?

Don't use BT in my car so no idea sorry!

Enjoyed the remote a lot last night - PS3 controller and TV remote MIA as we went to catch some Netflix, I said to my Fiance "I'll find the TV remote, you get the PS3 remote?". She agreed, forgetting I could use the phone (actually either phone, the HTC One IR blaster works well too), she was gutted when she got up from looking under the couch to see me grinning and turning on the TV with my phone :)

Totally worthwhile expenditure of relationship currency.
