Jumped on the gingerbread bandwagon using the following combo:
ROM: Simply Honey v 3.3 (2.3.3 JVB)
Kernel: GTO Ginger Kernel JVB (Beta 2 V2.1)
Modem: BUJP5 (tried JVO first)

Having pretty poor GPS - compared to DOC's JS8 which I was using before. It's struggling to get a lock , let alone find more than a handful of satellites.

Too early to jump on 2.3.3...? But my, it's oh so pretty and fast too!

surely your gps performance is nothing to do with the ROM and all to do with the modem?

one thing you can do is fire up FasterFix, and change the default location to Oceania, instead of Asia or Europe or whereever it defaults to...

Cool, yeah thought it was all to do with the modem but not 100% sure - new to the game! Thanks for that, seems it reverted after the modem change, back on oceania and working a lot better.

thats good - right after i mentioned this to you i thought to check my gps performance as i recently swapped to simplyhoney 3.3 - using GPS Test app - took about 10secs to start getting satellites on the screen and about 20secs to lock. then realised i had not re-run fasterfix as it does indeed seem to reset itself whenever there is a system change. i am on XT network so i am using the KC1 modem

changed to Oceania and retested in gpstest - found 3 satellites instantly on launch and locked on 5 satellites in 5seconds solid

huge difference!

there was talk of gold2.0 having some changes that werent as good as beta 7. im back on beta 7 now to test and it seems good - id say start with this

once installed u can also add the EXT4 app from CFroot's thread, and convert your stuff to ext4 if you havent already

Thanks for that mate, everything is working great so far and seems as fast or faster than cf-root. But the real test is whether the battery drain problem is still there. I'm still on rfs now but will probably change back to ext4.

so hows your idle drain now shrapnel you still on beta7 kernel?
i recently went back to gold2.0 to see how that ran, as i also upgraded to simplyhoney 3.3, and to be honest the gold2.0 is just as good a kernel. wondering how youve been finding it?

I use the SGS Tools GPS test, usually 10 hot starts, and my most recent results show fastest 5-satellite lock at 2.4 seconds, 15 metre accuracy, slowest 6.3 seconds, 15 metre accuracy. 8 satellites in view on each run.

Even in my office with the roman blinds drawn, the SGS locks in under 10 seconds. Which is why I've always been surprised at people's criticism of the Galaxy's GPS prowess. Worked better than the dedicated GPS unit supplied by the rental car company in the US and Canada.

Anybody tried to post here from their SGS? I find that as soon as I place the cursor into the text/editing box, the cursor immediately disappears from the screen as the screen re-orients itself, also hiding the text I have written/edited from view! How does one type and/or edit when one can't see the words? One scrolls up and down to find the characters to edit or to read your text so far, or... well, you get the picture.

I use the standard Geekzone web version and I'm using the standard web app as supplied with the phone.

I takes me about 10 times as long to compose a 5 line post with the SGS vs any other site I contribute to.

Very, very frustrating. I suppose it might be my phone but given that it doesn't have this issue elsewhere, I don't think so. To work around the issue, I've resorted to composing a note, selecting all, then pasting the contents into the Geekzone reply/text/edit box thingo. Annoying that I have to do this but quicker than typing straight in.

I'm interested, but there may be even better handsets due between now and when I get to upgrade. (Oct...)

Must say I'm getting quite excited about the SGS2 though - and it looks like lots of others are too. 3 million pre-orders already and that's before pre-ordering even begins in the US.

SGS2 has certainly caught the popular imagination.

I don't think it's all that much bigger than the SGS and apparently a lot more solid. I really want to get one but don't want to pay the current $1200. perhaps once they drop to $1000 I'll consider it. I got my SGS in August last year so perhaps once it's a year old... I am getting sick of my terrible battery life though, today I only got 8hrs and that was using JuiceDefender. I was browsing on 3g for about 2hrs throughout the day as I had a boring training course.

You might be better off with the diesei-powered Samsung Galaxy S-2di although I believe the silent mode leaves a bit to be desired. Or you could attach an 80 amp-hour Century car battery to a sack barrow or lpg-powered forklift and keep that with you whenever your phone is off the charger. :D

If I can get my replacement phone for the same price as the SGS 1 and it's better and the user experience is more impressive than the SGS 1 aleady is, then I see no barrier to upgrading. But then, this phone is really awesome now, so the urgent need to upgrade isn't there. It'll be down to gadget lust I expect.

Yeah I think I have gadget lust. I also have a huge number of apps so my SGS lags even with EXT4 :/

So I've just bought my self a new samsung i9000 on vodafone today and I've got an easy question.
how do I know that when I'm at home I'm using the wirless network and not 3g.. does the phone automaticly switch or do i have to change it my self?

Also how do I edit the order applications show up under my application window.

If you are connected to Wifi the 3G connection will not be used.

To edit the application order using TouchWiz I think you just hold down on an icon until it lets you drag it around. been a very long time since I used it though (LauncherPro FTW)
