awesome mate, I will have a look into that, is launcherpro a 3rd party program?

what are the base programs people here recomend?

LauncherPro is an app you can get from the Market, there's a free version and a paid version with more features and it's intended to replace whatever launcher you use. The Launcher is basically like the thing that lets you set up homescreens, widgets and the application menu.

There are so many applications to recommend it's not funny :D

Honestly though it depends what you want to do with your phone. The SGS comes with a lot of core functionality out of the box - one of the best things is the myriad of video formats it supports (mkv anyone?)

I'm coming from a 4 year old nokia with out even a camera so this thing is lightyears ahead of what I'm used to. its gonna be learning curve as to what i can and cant do with it etc. I'm over the moon thus far

Must say I'm getting quite excited about the SGS2 though - and it looks like lots of others are too. 3 million pre-orders already and that's before pre-ordering even begins in the US.

SGS2 has certainly caught the popular imagination.

the sgsII definitely looks like a winner... if money was no object id get one as soon as possible. but then, i know im a sucker for customisation... and i would get sick of waiting for the dev wizards to fumble thru early custom rom builds etc while stuck on TW4

then again i had a go with TW4 on my SGS as the latest build of SimplyHoney has it onboard, its pretty cool i must say. more than enough for the average user. i also switched to the SGSII's email app, and that is pretty damn slick too, i like the landscape mode 2 pane view and all that. so im getting a bit of a taste for it already :D

but yeah more than the SGSII im waiting to get my hands on a 8.9 Tab. ive held off getting a tablet for ages as they all havent had enough time to find themselves yet, and was contemplating the 7" Tab for ages, but the 8.9 has the right blend of OS (proper honeycomb), battery spec, screen density, everything. so im going to keep being patient till July, and try to get one, and use in conjunction with my SGS, which im sure will have a very fined tuned rom setup by then.

by the time its ready to be upgraded, the SGSII will be down to a more reasonable pricepoint, and the devs will have a few refined versions of customised roms to install on it, and that to me seems the perfect time to switch :)

I got my little bro to buy one of these and he came from a really terrible Samsung dumbphone with no camera etc. I've been teaching him how to use it and helped him out by flashing custom firmware etc. maybe a little overkill but he wanted a custom theme :D

I just send him email links of apps I think he will like

ive almost never watched video on my SGS other than youtube clips... ! interesting. i have put one movie on there (some national geographic doco) to test out the screen... and it does look phenomenal every time

theres definitely too many apps to even start but i guess everyone can recommend his/her own preferences for the core stuff

like i dont know anything about music or video players. but i can say:
Opera Mobile is the browser i always go back to, over and above the stock android browser, in terms of usability etc.
i love Retro Camera for... um, the retro cameras it has
CalWidget for my calendar widget.
Palmary pro for my weather
Battery snap for my battery usage graphs
Switchpro is a CRUCIAL widget to control my data/wifi/gps/bluetooth/sync behaviour and usage
Tweetcaster, is a good twitter android app
Astro as my primary file manager
Bump for a cross platform syncing tool
Dropbox for wireless data transfers of files etc especially quick transfer of photos
Ringdroid for custom ringtones made out of mp3 music which i always do (i love making custom snippets as ringtones)
Shootme as a screen capture tool
Colornote as a really great note app and widget and shopping list type app
SMS Popup which really changes your SMS handling and notification
TradeDroid pro which is a really awesome trademe app, which has won me bidding wars when ive been stuck in a car many a time lol
Appbrain which is a great way to track and manage your apps
and the most crucial, Titanium Backup pro, the only way to back up all your setup and data when youre flashing new roms every now and again.

those are probably in a nutshell the ones i will ALWAYS fall back on and reinstall no matter what

would be keen to hear others picks especially for music player and video player??

I watch a bit of video on my phone and use JetVD http://www.jetvd.com/ (go here on your phone) to download Youtube clips - it's pretty sweet.
I use Ringdroid to create ringtones from songs
Zedge to download new ringtones & wallpapers
Tweetdeck for Twitter/Facebook
Wellington Transit for train/bus timetables
Aldiko for reading ebooks (this goes great with Calibre for managing ebooks via PC)
BeyondPod for Podcasts
D7 Google Reader or FeedR for Google Reader
2Degrees Toolbox for the 2degrees widget

Oh I forgot I can't live without Beautiful Widgets for the best skinnable homescreen Clock/Weather Widget + a whole lot of other nice widgets that you may/may not use.

Kernel: GTO Ginger Kernel JVB (Beta 2 V2.1)
Modem: BUJP5 (tried JVO first)

Having pretty poor GPS - compared to DOC's JS8 which I was using before. It's struggling to get a lock , let alone find more than a handful of satellites.

Too early to jump on 2.3.3...? But my, it's oh so pretty and fast too!

On Simple Honey 3.3 myself. Pretty good. Quite fast, but not as fast as a 2.2 JS8 Rom with Speedmod but I can live with it for the time being.

UGKC1 modem is working real well, much better than UGJL2 for some reason. GPS is quick and gets locks from even inside the house. My problem of losing signal is gone I'm sure so yay!

SGS II is looking real nice but too expensive for my liking atm, and my SGS is less than 6 months old so really cannot justify upgrading just yet. Also the fact that I am a poor uni student :P

i recently went back to gold2.0 to see how that ran, as i also upgraded to simplyhoney 3.3, and to be honest the gold2.0 is just as good a kernel. wondering how youve been finding it?

It seems pretty damn good- definitely on par with froyo and I haven't had the android os process drain problem yet which is very promising. I have tried Gold 2 but it seemed unstable and I was having a few issues so I just stuck to beta7. I have been using my phone quite a bit the last few days(I'd call it moderate use). I charged it on Sunday and took it off at about 11:30 am and this screenshot is from about 6:30 tonight.

Definitely not, mainly because I've only had SGSI for 6 months and for me it is all I need and I want to make it last at least a year. And because it is quite a bit of dough for a phone when you already have an SGSI. But if I had to upgrade it would be what I'd buy... Samsung for life :P

I'll have a squint at Beautiful Widgets - I guess there's a community whacking together skins and such?

Yeah you can download new skins from within the app and there are tons to choose from. I think there must be a community as they appear to be created by different people.
