Brendan:Shrapnel:Brendan:
I was using the current one, 2.whatever. But it wasn't MIUI that did it; it happened while I was flashing a stock froyo. MIUI wasn't even ON the phone yet, hadn't got to that part.
My point was that ODIN can just go wrong. Doesn't seem to be enough verification of the state of the phone and the flashability of the updates.
Yeah I know what you meant when it happened(flashing EzBase or another froyo rom). The only time I've used a pit file is when flashing that EzBase rom yesterday and quite frankly I don't intend to again. I've had odin 1.7 konk out in the middle of flashing a kernel, and the file turned out to be the problem. If it checked the flashability it would be a lot better. If you downloaded the "Ez Odin" for the Ezrom it checks the md5's (obviously knows the md5's for the Ezbase rom's)
The md5 checksum is somehow encoded into the tar file, and the md5 is added to the end. There was some tutorial on how to do it on xda a while back.
If you are flashing a PIT file, they do not have a MD5 checksum built in; if you are flashing a TAR file, without the MD5 tacked on the end, e.g. just something.tar, it ALSO does not have a MD5 checksum. If your file does NOT have the checksum, you better be real damn sure it's not corrupted because it could all go very wrong - especially if it goes wrong during the primary or secondary bootloader flash...
(aimed at noobs in general, not you shrapnel lol)
?
lokhor: @Shrapnel whats battery life like on Miui rom? also does it play H264 MKV files?
lofreq: mate - responding to your message took almost an hour and a half of work! i went thru and tried to test all that i could think of after flashing 3.5 as i was worried something might not be working - so i tested camera (front and back), browsers, data connections, wifi, gps, rah rah... everything except email. when you mentioned the issue i jumped into the email app.. and it simply wouldnt load. it didnt FC, it just sat with a blank black screen with a blank blue part at the top (where it would normally have the inbox name etc) - sh1t! checked the ROM thread and sure enough no mention of SGSII email app, only Polaris office suite.
ok, so i checked titanium backup, and i DID have Email v 3.0.0.1 backed up. so easy i thought, just restore it. restored it - refused to work - it goes thru the setup of the email account, then sits on blank screen again. so i thought to try SGS tools and redownload another email app - tried the Galaxy Tab app - took ages and failed to install. "not enough space on destination" but i have heaps of space i havent installed that many apps. tried the "stock email" apk - failed also. tried uninstalling email.apk from my system - now its gone completely, icon gone etc. fffffffffuuuuuuuuu
was getting worse and worse - googled the SGSII app an saw lots of people with problems with it, but then also saw alot of people say all you need to do is go Settings>applicatoins>manage>all>email and click force stop and clear data. did that, tried it with titanium backup version, fail. tried with stocl 2.2 email apk - fail.
ended up finding this link to the NExusOne email app 2.3.4 version. finally after flashing this with CWM, and then going straight to the settings thing and Force stop/clear data, i was able to enter my exchange setup, and it FINALLY started working. cant believe it!!
anyway to save you the hassle, you can try either the stock SGSII app (plus a ton more SGSII apps that work on the SGS) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058654
or try the nexusone version, via CWM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067631
as the thread says, the nexus version is really fast, - and in testing, it is the fastest email app ive used yet. almost ZERO lag waiting for emails, i can hit next next next previous previous and it just flies thru my emails, the layout is very pretty, doubletap to zoom (not sure if pinch works?) displays images inline with an option to view images, overall im very impressed. i recomennd you try it and see if it works for you. i think it is better than the SGSII implementation - definitely miles faster.
as an aside to all this... doing all this work constantly with the phone now o/c to 1300mhz really showed - in heat!! the back of the phone got pretty warm thru this, enough to make me a bit worried! it cools off fast tho but man, 1.3gig is like butter but you do need to be aware of heat! :)

lokhor: Ok so I want to do a full flash including a repartition. Can anyone point me to the cleanest JVH/JVO stock rom (do they have different bootloaders?) and a good source for the 512 pit file?
I'm not sure what custom rom I will put on after flashing, maybe Juwe's again unless someone else can attest to another stable working rom.

lokhor: Does using a PIT file wipe the internal sd?

tanivula: Just flashed the modem from BUJV9 (the vodafone specific new base) - modem comes up as BUJV3. Signal strength has increased slightly (compared to BUJP5). Will have a play with GPS later on and during the weekend and see how it performs. Modem is off XDA here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13943732&postcount=7
