Vivasanti: Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster :)

Just brought a SGS from Hong Kong its got 2.1 on it, whats the best way for me to update the firmware id like to be on 2.2 or 2.2.1 (not sure about 2.3 just now)

Since the phones from HK do i have to be careful what rom im flashing?

any suggestions would be sweet :)

And heaps of reading on XDA - plenty to get your head around! Most important thing I think is to make sure you back up your EFS folder.

Did you change root explorer to read/write. backup the old one just in case it does something strange to your rom

Yep did that! Strange, might try reinstalling Simply Honey then dark core.

Just make sure you do the most important things
1. Backup your EFS
2. make sure you have 3 button recovery/download

and even if you screw things up it will be easy to recover

Followed your advice and just flushed in to 2.3.3 European version... noticed a bit of slowness compared to 2.2.3... anyone else had the same issues???

Basically, there is a lag sometimes with the response, especially in typing...

I haven't had any speed issues with Simply Honey 3.5 which is based on JVH and using FuguKernel 3.9 Ultra. I think Gingerbread still has some issues that need ironing out though.

Seems after a couple of reboots it came right... weird, will continue monitoring and let you know if I get to the bottom of it :-)

After several attempts to get BLN working with Simply Honey 3.5 + Dark Core 2.4 without success, I gave up and installed Darky's 10.1.

So far so good, I like how the wifi and network bars change colour when it's connected to google services. Not quite as smooth as SH + Dark Core but overall experience is nice.

im interested to know also, about 10.1 performance and your thoughts... have had an awesome run with SH but im getting tired of the blue rom - i love darky's green, and in reading 10.1 it looks like alot of things have been refined and improved since i left.

also long overdue to format my entire phone and bring it back to stock as i have been restoring apps and junk that ive had since early froyo

intending to run darky's 10.1 + the GTO overclocked JVH kernel and see if i can make the phone levitate... ;p

There's a couple of things I'm classing as annoyances: incremental ring and non multi CSC. Otherwise everything seems to run pretty well. I turned wifi off (for a change) overnight and don't think the battery lost much (if any) throughout the night. Will try again tonight and post results.

Hmmm, I think performance wise, Damiens kernels are awesome, but the over sharpness and lack of BLN support is what got me to change.

Out of interest, does anyone use the inbuilt SIP support in Gingerbread instead of SIPdroid or another 3rd party app?

I found DamianGTO's Kernel overly sharp and also not sure if I can be bothered with overclocking. FuguKernel isn't too bad. I would like to try a different rom than Simply Honey though - maybe I'll give Darky's a go. It's a pity Romkitchen has basically turned to crap since DocRambone left.

Within the rom kitchen thread on xda, tricky, one of the chefs has posted some new releases. One JSD and a JV9 one but I guess it defeats the purpose of having a configurable kitchen...
