lofreq: you guys that wait around for updates via Kies are crazy :) but ok i do remember what i used to be like when first starting out. once you get a bit more time to try out things like odin and CWM you will never need to wait again

agreed about the facebook app, its the most terribly coded nonsense ever. ive never used it, and have always used the facebook mobile site which has been improved tenfold over the time ive been using it... best part is you can have facebook open while tabbing to other sites instantly just like your normal firefox/IE - no time wasted switching between apps etc - so much quicker to use

Kinda crazy, but then again for me it's most critical that the phone works, everything else is playing & getting a feel for android vs iOS. So I use Kies because I figure it's been more thoroughly tested, but also once I've finished work the last thing I want is to play with more computers, dirt bikes are way more fun.

The only reason the facebook app is still on my phone for is that it enables you to upload images, if the web page did that it'd have been deleted within the first day of downloading, mind you it's better coded than Zinio on an iPad :).

I've always used the FB app on my SGS, even more reason to keep it now that vodafone is doing unmetered FB access on Android.

Yeah true, I've only had my SGS for nearly 2 months and have been reading up about flashing since I wasn't sure if a parallel import would be able to get the update over Kies. I haven't been too fussed about it thus far since the phone is still new for me, and the early gingerbread ROMs seemed to be a bit quirky. Wanted to get my feet wet on something stable, but that said it seems like some of the custom ROMs are pretty stable now. It's just some like Cyanogenmod that aren't quite there yet, but Darky's or Juwe from what I have read sound pretty stable.

May still end up doing a custom ROM at some point though for the extra customization options, but for now it will be good to try out gingerbread through an 'official' update.

lokhor: @lofreq what browser do you use?

opera mobile - heres an example screenshot showing the popup tabs screen which allows you to quickly jump between browser windows, or close unneeded tabs as needed

the tabs slide away when you dont need them and by enabling full screen you also can pan away from the address bar up the top to maximise your screen real estate.

supports all normal pinch to zoom, double tap to zoom, bla bla

I just plugged mine into KIES and it has indicated that a new firmware is available. My SGS was a NZ new unit purchased from Noel Leeming last year.

Latest firmware version: PDA: JVH / Phone: JV1 / CSC: Jv1 (VNZ)

Will try and update shortly.

do you mean it allows you to batch upload albums and whatnot?

for normal image posting im sure you know you can just send an email to your customised facebook page email, with images as an attachment which will show up on your wall, subject line shows up as the caption.. which is good for those quick wall updates. you can attach more than one photo and they all go up - i batch uploaded 3 at a time for example during big day out and they worked well :)

but ok if the app allows more detailed control over photo uploads, and you upload alot, then i guess stick with what works best for you :)

and for those worried about stability etc, fair enough, i can understand wanting a stable phone where everything works as opposed to a buggy loopy custom rom that might crap out on you - you just need time and interest in reading up on the custom roms available and more importantly the reported bugs from early adopters, and then more importantly than that, the speed and willingness of the developer to correct and update their work. hence me always recommending that no one go past page 1 on the XDA i9000 android forum - if it is inactive enough to fall to page 2 then its probably not one you want to go for... just a simple rule of thumb of course!

there definitely are some very stable and complete custom roms out there, and as mentioned i believe the best of the lot are Juwes and SimplyHoney - Darky following that but ive found SOME things with his builds to be iffy. many others are very new developers and in their infancy, theres alot to be said about developers that have been customising since Froyo because they know the basics. and id never touch Cyanogen mod because that seems more of a dev playgound than a serious complete rom alternative

anyway all the best to those getting JVH via kies, enjoy the experience - i maintain the best part about GB is the "CRT style " screen lock animation!!! haha

its really nothing to do with telecom, or vodafone or any carrier. they have to wait for the region specific updates to come from samsung - there are no "android builders" in telecom sitting around taking their time making a rom and holding you up - they just have to wait for the specific build to come from samsung before they can roll it out.

the carriers send off their required updates, modifications and so on to Samsung, and wait for a customised regional CSC package to be built specifically for them. once thats available, it is tested etc, and all go, then its released for kies.

for example, telecoms requested modifications will include :
the telecom logo boot animation and shutdown animation and sound,
the background and homescreen setup for new users,
the setup of Touchwiz for out-of-box experience,
the telecom APNs,
the customisations to the icons (like renaming the android browser into "YxT World" and that sort of sillyness),
loading bookmarks that point to their homepages or customer services ..........

you get the picture. a thousand settings, that need to be built into the CSC and into the rom. Vodafone will have all their own demands of their own. as will every single other monkey carrier in the whole world who samsung have agreed to support and distribute their galaxyS's thru. and being "official", it all needs to be tested by samsung completely before being sent out because, they will be committed to the carrier to not release a rom thats goingto f@#k all the carriers' customers!!! and this is JUST for the galaxy S. multiply this out across ALL the handsets that need supporting, the different variants on differing 3g frequencies or 4g even, and you start to understand the logistics required just to "update firmware"

so give samsung a chance, the fact that they are doing ANYthing at all we should be happy about. it would have been infinitely cheaper to just not do anything, right?

and yeah no need to bag on telecom or carriers, they USUALLY have nothing to do with it...

I saw the new JVH Talon kernel on xda today, looks pretty promising with some good features(voodoo color). Was going to try it out but I'm still the CM7 side of things, can't decide! Must have switched between CM7 and Samsung roms several times, it's unhealthy :P

sweet, so I just downloaded the firmware update and its up and running :D (tried this morning but it couldnt connect to server, i guess too many people were updating at the time and i only had 15mins to try it).

It's definitely running faster, i can tell just by the smoothness of flicking the unlock screen and moving between the pages of my homescreens / apps. Haven't noticed too much different, some newer icons on the notifications bar and the keyboard is slightly different. But so far so good, was a very easy process through Kies.

Hey guys

I have a galaxy s from expert infotech and i'm pretty sure its a singapore one. Anyways still haven't got gingerbread even though my mate who's one is a nz one has already got it. I thought for sure that my one was going to get it first.

so what should i do? how can i get 2.3 ?
i'm pretty noob with this android stuff. just came from symbian so still learning the ropes of android

what happens if i do the *#272*imei# thing and change it there? will that work?

any help would be appreciated

this just in: updated version of the speedy nexus S email APK for gingerbread roms

this new version fixes exchange sync timeout issues that admittedly i have had from time to time

its also probably the fastest email app ive used on the SGS so far

lofreq, does it have a "move to folder" option, this was missing in the previous version, which I didn't like, so have been using SGSII app to date.

Would give nexus a go again if it had this option.

I took the plunge last night to drag myself kicking and screaming into Gingerbread-ville via Odin. It's absolutely vanilla so I'll probably leave it that way for a few weeks to get a decent feel for the improvements, but 'smooth' is my first impression.

A couple of things are immediately apparent though - wifi signal is significantly lower and GPS is poo compared to my JPY experience. I'll be looking at sorting those over the weekend if time allows (and assuming that there are straightforward fixes. If not, I guess I'll be flashing a modded ROM in the future).

There was a good thread on XDA about the Wifi signal strength and what happens when you change to a Froyo modem but I can't find it anymore! I think from memory the jist of it was that the notification indication (# of bars) showed singal strength went up, however comparing dB numbers - they stayed the same. But reverting to a Froyo rom had an increase in actual signal strength.

As for GPS, I'm running the BUJV3 modem (from vodafones BUJV9 release) and get pretty quick and accurate GPS lock, failing that, I'd reccomend going back to BUJP5
