jeffnz: Kies may not work for a variety of reasons especially if it has been rooted.

Odin is really only needed for the initial rooting and installation of recovery after that only need to use CWM to flash new Roms.

If the phone is properly bricked Odin won't help

You can use odin to flash anything to the device, Kernal, baseband and Roms

And in this situation we are talking about stock roms not custom, I'm not sure this guys is aware of what CWM or Rooting is.

And Odin is one of the the only tools to fix a bricked device, its based off the old goldcard method. If you can get to bootloader then odin can help, if you can't get to bootloader well kies can't help you either and then the only hope is a proper goldcard or a service repair technicians tools.

I am aware of what it is used for and use mobile Odin when required. If your phone is properly bricked you won't be able to access download mode therefore Odin is of little use however a usb Jig may give you access.
Anyway this is off topic my apologies.

AKLWestie: By the way, with your telecom SIM in the phone. Try to enter * # 0 0 1 1 # the phone should enter Service Mode if your phone is using stock ROM.

The third line of the screen will show you which band your phone is using currently. Mine is showing WCDMA 850 Band 5. I am on Telecom as well.

If you only see WCDMA 2100 Band 1 and it does not change (try doing this in different areas), then your phone might be missing the 850MHz band / band 5. If it is showing WCDMA 850 Band 5, your phone might be blocked by Telecom (could be a lost / stolen phone).

Did this at work and a few places on the way home and was showing the same as above, WCDMA 850 Band 5, and was calling/txting no worries. But at home no signal, even though the nearest cell tower is a matter of 2-3km away but over a hill. Could it possibly be a faulty antenna?

It is good news your phone is picking up WCDMA 850 band 5.

Well, if your phone was able to call and send SMS in other areas it's obviously not blocked.

Have you tried other Telecom phone at home to see if it works then?

Yeah my old phone worked perfectly fine, usually full reception.
