Did you not read a word I said? for crying out loud man...
You really think vodafone NZ cant bring in phones cheaper than I can?
come on...

langers1972: $850 from Clove and that's with an extra 8GB card as a freebie.
That whopping $100 VF subsidy really is laughable plus you'll be stuck on some 24 month plan at an extortionate rate, come off it
Linuxluver: The Smart plan that's $40/month - which entitles the phone user to benefit from the 3GB data promo - represents excellent value. I'm talking to my pre-pay daughter about *saving* herself some money and moving on to such a plan with her smart phone (Nexus One).

Actually that's $850 + gst and customs(994NZD at current rates) , so I think I would have rather gone the Vodafone option(as long as it doens't actually have vodafone at the top or vodafone custom firmware on it! All good though, had the phone a month and it's getting used a lot still
Kilack:Linuxluver:Kilack: Well yeah it basically does come down to our size probably, its not an excuse for them but it means we only have a few players and they can basically do what they want and we don't have much choice, no doubt at all we are ripped off compared to these countries.
I mean they aren't even subsidising it are they on contract?
You can bring in the galaxy for their subsidised price yourself and in fact for 100 more you can get the 16 gig version delivered to your door..
Interesting that vodafone nz only got the 8 gig version, vodafone uk got the 16 gig one too..
another important difference.
Prices in NZ are higher for pretty much everything due to our remote location and small population. Those aren't necessarily bad things, either, as they make for a very pleasant lifestyle here.
But the price we pay for our paradise....is some stuff costs more than it does in the (relative) human ant-hills of Europe, North America and Asia.

update: sorry that might have been harsh.. but way too many people jump to that defence and in this case it just isn't valid at all not even remotely.

Kilack: I guess you haven't been reading about the vodafone UK galaxy s customers and their firmware issues then :)
Official updates for their phones in kies waiting for them from samsung but vodafone telling them they aren't allowed to update and telling them if they do they will even lose their warranty with vodafone. The updates have to come from vodafone UK so they can put their extras on etc... I wonder if it will be the same here.

I heard you. I guess I should have made the explicit statement that our smaller market means business require larger margins on what they sell.
VFNZ may well get very cheap prices, but they need a healthy margin to keep their company running and turning a profit that makes it all worth their while. I'm assuming you've seen their offices and stores all over the country and understand everyone working them is being paid as a consequence of what we spend?
From washers to nuts to cell phones....NZ margins are high compared to markets with larger volumes. I did read what you said...and should have made is clear WHY being small and remote sees us pay higher prices even if the vendors do get stuff for what we think of as cheap. They can't sell at peanut margins or they won't even be able to pay Russell Stanners.....never mind keep the company running.

Old3eyes
old3eyes: Everyone seems to think that down here in little ol NZ that we should pay higher prices because we are small. These fone are bought by Vodafone Inc (because of their buying clout) not Vodafone NZ . Voda Inc allocates these to their franchise operators around the world. There isn't a 'Vodafone Inc'. 'Vodafone Group PLC' is probably what you are thinking. And Vodafone New Zealand is not a 'franchise operator'.

oxnsox: Couple of things I see wrong with the story so far
The Samsung Galaxy S is available now with a RRP$999
Well at least in the press release it is... elsewhere (even on the website) its out of stock
@Kiljack
I think you need to step back and look at this thru the other end of the telescope.
Forget about whatever subsidies VF are offering (partly because you're not really interested in them anyway). The real issue is that if you elect to buy the handset outright from where-ever, and put it on a Smart Plan, you're paying the same amount (and getting the same benefits) as the folk who took the subsidy.
So by signing a fixed term contract you're effective getting a discounted service (to the value of the subsidy) over the folk who want an open term contract. You both get the same service bundle, but if you elect to keep paying for 24mths then the hardware is cheaper than you'll get it thru most other channels.
Kilack:
Sorry but I think you are still missing it...we are talking about phones sold on a 24 month contract, that is where they make their money.
That is why vodafone UK and loads of carriers all over the world give the phone away for _free_ or dirt cheap cause they make so much $$ on the locked in contract.
Just like printers are almost given away these days and they make the $$ on the ink.
its an old business principle, don't think for one second vodafone nz aren't making a killing here both on the sale of the phone and on the plan after. That is fine of course they are a business but it's disturbing how so many kiwis are so keen to get walked over and think big companies are actually looking after them and giving things out as cheaply as they can without hurting their profits. Time for compulsory business courses in high schools here I think.
