Battery life for me is superb, best smartphone I've had to date in that regard.

Not sure what the basis of the complaints are at XDA, but my presumptive diagnosis would be that its a user problem.

M_I_C_H_A_E_L: Hi guys. I have another question (or two) about the Galaxy.

First off, If i bought one from a parallel importer, would it be safe to do an ota upgrade to 2.2? Would my phone brick or anything? Im guessing yes, but thought I would ask to make sure.

Secondly, If I bought one from a parallel importer, would the android market still realise im in New Zealand and not the country it came from? What I mean is when I put in my Visa Debit details to buy apps (I think thats how you pay apps? Using your credit/debit card) will it reconise it or not?

No worries with the Market, it'll see your location just fine.

There is no OTA updating in the Galaxy S, but you can use a program called ODIN, its very easy to do. Paul OBrian at Modaco has some ROMs that come with inbuilt Root and cyanogen custom recovery inbuilt, take a look there and at XDA for instructions.

Mine lasts approx 1.5-2 days, so it's fine for battery life

That is with playing say, 30 minutes PSX4Droid at work, syncing 3 email accounts every hour, using gtalk and latitude with mates, playing the odd video, updating Trademe/Geekzone when I'm bored

I still think battery manufacturers are holding the electronics world to ransom, they need to introduce new technology instead of rebranding all the time :( it's in a really sad state

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I would think that inventing a long-life, small, cool-running battery would give you google-esque amounts of cash instantly!!

Just a to clarify regarding the SGS (from an Android newbie) If I was to get the device from clove.co.uk now, then when Android 2.2 is released, would I need to wait for the Samsung version of the software to come out before I could load it on the phone?

How hard is it to load the new version of Android? Is it a simple matter of downloading the update to the phone and updating or do you do it with the help of a PC.

Sorry if these questions are stupid, just want to make sure before moving to it.

You can wait for the new Samsung version round the first week of September, apparently it's an easy upgrade through the Samsung Kies PC software, where you shouldn't lose any data or settings...I won't lose any anyway, I've got it all syncing through my Gmail account and have my pictures stored on the external SD card

If you wanted to take a risk and use the test version, it's not too hard to do at all, just requires use of Odin(firmware flashing software), a couple of new files, turning on a few settings and hoping nothing goes wrong(it hasn't yet for me). All through USB to PC cable.

If it was supported by Vodafone, ie they sold it, then there would possibly be a FTA update over the 3g network, but I don't know if Vodafone will bring this in anytime soon

Yeah I want to know this aswell. I cant remeber what device (Desire i think) but people who got it imported had troubles with the OTA update because it had a different rom or something???

@jaymz - any answers to your question will be speculative as there is no froyo ota update to comment on. I imagine that you will have to download an update if the phone is not carried by vodafone. You might have to download an update specific to your rom, and hopefully that will be available... maybe others can comment.

I'm guessing that the phone from Clove.co.uk will be an unlocked phone (straight from Samsung UK) That would mean that the updates that I get would have to come from Samsung (rather than using a modified version of Android)

A second question though. Am I right in thinking that the Android OS is seperate to the firmware for the phone? I am pretty sure that is the case, but some comments read here and else where seem to muddy the waters on this.

IE. Google releases Android 2.2, this should be able to be loaded onto any Android phone, right? (Samsung, HTC, would modify this OS to work with their phones and add their own widgets into it).
With that assumption I would need to wait for Samsung to release Android 2.2 for the Galaxy S in order to upgrade without downloading a modfied OS for the phone?

Firmware, is just firmware. Comes from the manufacturers for the specific phone only.

Correct me if I am wrong through.

I got the 8gig ya, can buy SD cards cheap here so thought just phone all good.

I had to ring my CC bank and find out a purchase number as proof for mine as I used a different shipping address but then I just emailed it back next day and they shipped it. Fingers crossed get it by Friday.

I'm hopeful to get it by Friday too, it was shipped Monday (UK time?).

Question about the shipping, which NZ courier does this mail get passed onto? Will it be their same practice of leaving a collection card if no one is home?

from what i read the manufacturers of the phone have to release their own version of the firmware, which is why nexus got froyo before everyone else. i read this is because they all have different hardware. however there are also people hacking the froyo onto devices (eg. Galaxy S) that don't have an official release yet.

It's usually CourierPost, who left it on my doorstep last time even though it had "Signature required international delivery" on the stamp. I really should have claimed it "lost" and had them stress over it, but instead I got a family member to get it off my doorstep before it got stolen
