Plus GST alone this would bring the device to NZ$960. Telecom will sell it for NZ$999. Add the customs fee and the lack of local warranty makes it expensive compared to local price.

Speaking of Telecom, still nothing in terms of pricing or pre-order information on their website, with less than 5 days to launch. Is this part of the marketing strategy?

Brothers I seek you understanding and your support.

I'm currently suffering with an aging HTC Sensation (with a well-nigh fcuked screen) that I was forced to switch back to after a brief firtation with an Galaxy S2 - that ended badly when it was illegally purloined by the Missus. Truth is I didn't really enjoy Touch Wiz UI anyway but still a theft is a theft right?.

So I picked up a near new HTC One X on Trade Me a few weeks back for $450 before that too was pinched my my student daughter in Otago. (just what is it with the thieving chicks around here?!)

So I'm back to a clapped-out Sensation with a dodgie half-screen and have stared to look about me for the next candidate. I noticed the HTC One while reading up on reviews of the One X and thought: "Hello, now this looks kinda cool". Despite the often amusing virulence of clearly insecure S4 devotees I've only seen great reports to date from owners and reviewers. The same is true of the S4 so I'm a little torn.

I've got a natural inclination to root for the little guy (that's why I tend to resist the Sammys and Apples of this world) and have always appreciated the efforts that HTC (and Palm before them) have put into their tech offerings.

I'm determined that no overwhelming marketing campaign (read Sansung) nor any all-encompassing ecosystem (read Apple) is going to trap, sway or cloud my judgement. At the moment its a two horse race between an S4 and the HTC One and to my mind the HTC has its nose in front. I'll see who makes it to the line first in a week or so if I can stand this bloody Sensation.

Perhaps if NZTechfreak does bring all his A-toys along to that IRL meet then I might get to hold both in my hand at the same time and perhaps it will all become clear.

My only real challenge is going to be to hang on to the bloody thing once make a decision. I have a suspicion my oldest Son is also lining me up and is waiting to pounce!

Seriously, I have been using the HTC One by Telecom for the last couple of days, full time since making that short unboxing video. I usually put a test SIM in some devices and not use that much. This is the first Android device that works the way I want (with decent Exchange/Office 365 sync) and looks good. So much so that I have my SIM on this device and have left my Lumia 920 in the drawer for the last two days.

I am informed by Telecom the HTC One will be in stores 7th May and there will be no pre-orders.

Just go to Noel Leemings and say you have a friend who purchased the phone for $800, they'll give you a deal for $890 or $900... better than going to telecom. ONly thing is they might get the phone 1 day later than Telecom. But a day saves you 100 bucks.

I ordered from Exeltek as well, they've been quite good. Phone is being shipped this morning. I'm happy to pay a little extra for unbranded stock. I'm on Vodafone anyway and the Telecom OTA updates for the One X have been severely delayed. I'll be rooting it, but I'm happier to not be a slave to Telecom's update schedule in any way, shape, or form.

I import a lot with dhl and never i got charged costum and gst (i been very lucky) anyway even If i will be charged is a win for me to secure this hanset as im convinced will run out the retailes very quick. Also i will have 2 years warranty with HTC Australia (i plan to move in Australia in December) which sound good.
I will let you know if i been charged or not from custom.

I ordered one from Dick Smith last weekend. Saw the offer they have on Q-Card for 50 months interest free credit and couldn't resist - it also fitted the payment plan imposed by my better half after a few other indulgences that have stretched the credit card.

Cost was $999 which I'll pay off over the next year or so. Hopefully get 2 years out of this one as I did with my HTC Desire.

Switched from the Desire (which was rooted and running ICS 4.1) to a S3 expecting spectacular things but was disappointed with TouchWiz and rooted it almost immediately. I'm just not a fan of the Samsung experience and have found that their ecosystem is going in a similar direction as Apple - for instance the media apps that only work with Samsung AV products or printers.

I've been burned by HTC previously - I bought a Flyer tablet. Its running Honeycomb but HTC never provided an update to ICS (various ones do exist, but lack functionality for the pen etc). But it still goes well and I'm using it more than ever to read books and comics, and watch podcasts etc.

Hopefully HTC will provide more support to the One than they did to the Flyer. This is a last roll of the dice for them and they can't affort to lose customers by restricting their update cycle.
