Thanks for that. Read a few posts on their forum and while they listed some fairly complex process to make 850 'stick' (flashing one modem, making some band changes, flashing another modem, making more changes, and then flashing the modem you actually want) I just tried a different modem (KC1 in this case) and I was straight on to 850 without having to make any further settings tweaks!

I'll see how KC1 goes re battery life, etc but the fact I've now got 850 connectivity makes me pretty happy.

you were using the wrong modem for XT - despite doing the convoluted process to get 850 'tickable' in the service menus etc you will still find most modems refuse to come off 2100 for XT, which is annoying. ive played this game many times - i can only attribute it to the modem file you use: id say the signal strength tolerance in each modem.bin is different, (which tells the phone when its time to switch bands)

you should be good with UGKC1 which is what ive been using for a while now and it functions great. just got back from a trip to melbourne and can confirm the same modem works very well there, 3g data and all.

I think lots of people use BVJW2 on XT and are fine? you could also try disable 2100 in the service menu, this will tell you if 850 actually works on your phone (maybe you don't have good 850 reception where you live, or 850 is broken on your phone, maybe you got given an i9000 instead of i9000T by the shop you bought it from)

are you sure lots of people run JW2? ive tried it and despite doing the "modem dance" as its called, the phone will refuse to select 850mhz band (despite it being starred*, and also even if only 850 is selected, it will still stick to 2100 band) - ive been testing 850 modem performance on XT since dec last year, and have flashed dozens of different ones that claim on XDA to work in 850mhz zones in the states, and very few work well on XT. the ones that work the best are the ones that are released for the Bell network - hence UGJL2, UGKC1.

i dont think its to do with 850 reception or with 850 being broken - from my experience its everything to do with the setup of the modem.bin that you have flashed.

how would these people have even got JW2 if not by manually flashing it on using CWM or Odin?

Unrelated: Anyone else undervolt their Galaxy S? ; I just started undervolting mine and I'm wondering what voltages others are using for each cpu speed.

Seems like Android OS and Android System battery drain bug is back on my phone. Funny it was fine for the past couple of weeks and now all of a sudden my battery drain on idle is just terrible.

timely discussion however, i just did a bit of research and the successor to the UGKC1 modem is now UGKG3

its a md5 file that you need to flash using Odin

i did some preliminary testing using speedtest and GPS test, speeds are now averaging 2.5mbps down, 1mbps up, compared to 1.8mbps down and 700kbps up using UGKC1 - tested several times and averaged from the same place in my apartment

and in the same place, GPS used to get lock in about 20 sec to 5 satellites with 30m accuracy, with this new KG3 modem i locked to 9 satellites in about 10sec with 10meter accuracy

and you couldnt say "favorable atmospheric conditions" helped, cus it just snowed outside my apartment on Nelson St here in Auckland ;p

If you're running 2.3.4 then it's more likely to be something that's waking up your SGS constantly - download betterbatterystats (google it to find the XDA thread), set it to monitor wakelocks since charged, charge your phone, then unplug. Let it run for 6 hours or so, and then check to see what is waking it up.

Yes - when you move from one version of Android to another (i.e. Froyo to Gingerbread), you need to firstly flash new bootloaders; if you don't do this, you'll run into all sorts of issues down the track. You can flash the bootloaders by themselves via Odin, but it's VERY risky, so doing it via an update package like Resurrection is always the best option.

man i would seriously not trust those windows messages when they pop up - i dont know what triggers it to believe your media is screwy but it seems unreliable in my experience. ive inserted USB keys in the past and had that message come up as if my key was stuffed - but an unplug and a replug magically fixes it and the drive contents pop up normally

your phone is not a USB mass storage device, it is simply emulating that to Windows - if windows then tries to 'format' your phone to 'fix' some problem, i shudder to think what will happen.

im using my galaxy S on win7 64bit also, and have not had this pop up - however i always use the phone in "USB Debugging" mode, and always use the notification bar prompts to trigger the "connect device" process - how is your phone set up?

is this a new problem or has it always done it? also, have you tested connecting it to another machine, perhaps winXP or something, and see if the phone pops up in MyComputer as you would expect?

Hi, I thought that restarting my phone would reset the battery usage statistics but it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem. I am running the telecom 2.3.3

Hi,

I have a Samsung galaxy s GT-I9000T, I want to update to 2.3.3.
In Kies is says

Current firmware version : PDA:KA1/PHONE:JL1/CSC:JL1 (TNZ)
Latest firmware version : PDA:KA1/PHONE:JL1/CSC:JL1 (TNZ)

I assume it is a Telecom phone. Running Android 2.1 update 1 Eclair

PDA: I9000TDOKA1
Phone: I9000TDOJL1
CSC: I9000TTNZJL1

Can any help me.
