seriously: I've been searching for a while but have found no answer, is there any way to put apps onto the phone from my computer? I don't have a wireless network at home so I can only connect through the usb cable.

It would be easiest to pick up a cheap wireless access point, or if you have Windows 7 you can get a wifi adapter and create a virtual access point. There are apparently ways to do "reverse tethering" through the USB cable but they involve a lot of messing around, and it's very handy to have wifi access for the phone around the house anyway.

You can install APKs from the USB card but you can't download them (legitimately) for many market apps.

I have vista, I tried making an ad-hoc network but the phone can't see it, extremely lame. I don't want to have to spend ~60+ to get a WAP.

I think that game I downloaded from Kies isn't able to work on these phones? Difference between .app and .apk?

Pretty much any software from Kies isn't compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S. Sounds silly I know, but Kies is really just geared for Bada-powered phones, not Android-powered phones. Stick to the Android Market and you'll be fine.

You don't need Kies. Just mount the phone as a removeable drive, drag the apk onto your SD Card and install it using a file manager or app installer application. The key, as mentioned above, is that you must have "allow unknown sources" selected in Settings-Applications.

It doesn't support ad-hoc networks out of the box, though there are various hacks to do it. Or just install apps over 3G data, they are mostly pretty small.

Can't use 3g, either isn't in my area (or maybe the phone being from UK i haven't changed anything?). Can't get into the android market place.

I have allow 3rd party apps, I turned that on pretty much straight away.

I'm about to root my phone/change firmware etc to allow ad-hoc networks.

Can't seem to access the sd cards, connected as mass storage = see two removable disks, clicking them gives a 'please insert disk into removable disk' regardless of if USB debugging is on or not.

You may have said previously, excuse me if you have, but have you set up the APN so that your internet data (3G etc) will work? That may alleviate some of your problems if you haven't. There are threads in this forum with the correct settings that you need to apply.

Secondly, the two disks you see will be the internal SD and the removable SD won't it? Have you tried to access both of them? When I connect my phone (admittedly an HTC Hero) it provides options of charge only, HTC Synch, Mount disk or Tethering. I select mount the drive. Is the SGS the same?

When USB is connected and the connection is in mass storage mode you need to select "USB connected" from the notification dropdown and select "Mount" to connect the internal storage cards to the PC drives. This is made a lot clearer in 2.2.

Any one know 2degrees versions of this?

Ugh, can't edit post.

I found an updater within the phone, 2degrees sent through the info and it installed (was sent two things, only MMS installed other couldn't) unfortunately I can't find the menu path again. :(

Also, rooting was simple once I could access that cards, took less than a minute.

I bought a 50mb 2degrees data pack, I can go onto the internet now I loaded up a youtube video so the internet is working but when I tried setting my gmail account up with the app store it came up with unreliable internet / you may not have data plan enabled.

I read that people were having to hard reset their HTC Hero...the case here too?

I may finally ditch my Touch Pro2 and the Galaxy S looks the goods. How's everyone coping with resolving the GPS issue?

This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care.

Keep getting this message, when I have 3G enabled, while being on the uni network right now, currently in full bar reception yet I can't connect to the android market (says this when trying to sign into my gmail email account).

Any help?

It seems like most of the people with problems are trying to use it in places with sub-par signals, like indoors, handheld, on the bus or in cars with coated windscreens. It's definitely not that sensitive as it can only occasionally get a lock indoors here, where my dedicated GPS can, and people comparing it to other phone GPSes say it's not as good. But it does work fine for me in the car with a clear view of the sky which is good enough for me.
