I had troubles with the Nokia 8 as well but you can try with a 45 degree angle in top of the phone. Remember, it's all metal so you have to find its sweet spot...

Is the Nokia 5 worth the extra $50 over the Nokia 3? Slightly bigger screen, better processor, better camera?

Debating to get my mum one for Xmas or not, would be her first Smartphone. She would be a very basic user, so the extra screen space and processor isn't a big deal to her really. I think she would be happy with a "Good" camera though for taking pictures of the cat.

My dad has the 5 and I am pretty impressed with it for what it cost him. Faster than my iphone 6 on apps, very good screen quality too. The 5 also is all metal back, and the build quality is very good. The camera on the 5 is also supposed to be as good as the 6 according to reviews. The processor IMO is quite a big deal, asotherwise it will have a shorter life as it slows down with updates. .The 5 isn't exactly all that snappy compared to flagship android phones, but it is reasonable. I don't think I would want anything slower than the 5 on a new phone. IMO the extra $50 is well worth it, unless they want a smaller phone. I also don't think the 3 has a fingerprint reader like the 5, and that alone is worth the money. It is faster than my iphone one and means you rarely have to access the lock screen and swipe.

Oubadah: Where is the NFC antenna on this damned phone? (Nokia 6) twice I have made a fool of myself trying to use it on contactless payment devices. I’m sure I have the app (asb) and the phone configured correctly, and one time it was “sort of” detecting the phone. I thought it would be behind the glass bit that the camera and flash are embedded in, but apparently it’s not.

I think it's between camera and Nokia logo. Using android pay quite regularly with BNZ card.

Yeah. But I had troubles when was trying to position camera area against POS terminal. So now I just position the area below camera/flash against POS terminal.

December patch hasn't fixed the notification issues on the Nokia 6. Phone is still unusable, and no acknowledgement of the issue from Nokia on the month-old thread about it. https://community.phones.nokia.com/support/discussions/topics/7000012185/

I also note that I got that patch days ago on one of my units, but the other one refuses to find it. So that's the 1st December patch still not available on the 27th of December (and the phone it has arrived on got it on the 20th at the earliest).

Don't know why I still have these useless phones. The Nokia 6 2 is coming out now, so I guess this model will get even less attention now.

December update was just pure Android December Security update. Second Nov update was performance and bugfix update. I did not have any notification issues though noticed that after the second Nov update less mem usage and improved battery life.

What does that mean then, they broke doze on specific models of the Nokia 6? It's obviously not just me, but I'm willing to believe that you don't have the issue.

Anyway, I just requested the Oreo Beta on one of my units and it's downloading now. The phone is going to be hard pressed to get any more useless than it is now, and I have two of them, so why not? I was waiting for someone to confirm the notification issue on Oreo, but no one has so it looks like I'm the guinea pig.

I doubt doze is broken for specific models. TA-1021 and TA-1025 are almost identical. I think it can be aggressive mem management, killing apps. Have you tried to kill all running apps and test whether alarm works after phone is idle for a couple of hours?

No Dolby in Beta, also it has a Bluetooth issue draining battery, some ppl were reporting wifi losing connectivity after waking phone. I would not install it on my daily driver, though you have 2 handsets.

Got a Nokia 8 for daughter. Pretty happy and I'd personally use instead of Huawei.

Well the Oreo phone managed to notify for a reminder after being left idle 8 hrs (notification was 20 seconds late, but whatever).

Still broken:

Gmail notifications
Outlook notifications
Microsoft Authenticator notifications

I'll test some more things later, including the alarm in isolation (set an alarm for this morning and it went off, but that was 5 min after the reminder, so not a clean test).

The phone is still useless to me.

I see it now has a glance feature for notifications... which is rendered mostly useless by the fact that the bloody notifications don't come until you turn on the screen anyway.

For the record, I killed all running apps beforehand and I ensured that battery optimization was still disabled for all the apps mentioned (although I see a lot of system apps that seem like they should be excluded from doze to start with and I wonder if I should just go through and disable optimization for ever single thing).

Did you try disabling the background activity manager? Or whitelist those apps. It's under battery.

I think it's already disabled. This is how it's configured:

Left phone idle for approx 2 Hrs, then tried both mail apps. Gmail didn't notify, and Outlook notified 10 minutes late.

next tried leaving the phone for 4Hrs, gmail still didn't notify at all and Outlook was delayed 30 min this time.

Hangouts appears to be unaffected, always notifying instantly no matter how long the phone has been idle, and has been since the beginning (even on Nougat).

I think it is aa combination of crappy Android plus crappy apps. Not specific to Nokia. Huawei is not great either.
