IronH: Gsmarena have completed some testing between i9505 qualcom s600 quad vs i9500 exynos octa.

exynos octa is marginally faster, while s600 quad has much better battery life. Conclusion is s600 quad is the one to go for because the minimal extra performance exynos quad has isnt worth the rather significant loss of battery life.

phonearena also posted some benchmark comparisons - some benchmarks s600 quad is faster while in others the exynos is faster. Again the scores are pretty close. No battery comparison though.

I disagree. Unless you're going to heavily use 4g. The i9500 is quicker and has much better sound reproduction compared to the i9505

Edit: wait. What is the s600? The i9505?

Got evidence? both articles I linked to prove otherwise. GSMarena also show no noticeable difference in audio quality.

Regarding the audio output of both from the headphone jack:

Over a blinded ~45minute listening session between the two I struggled to discern any particularly noticeable difference using UE900 IEMs. That suggests very closely matched outputs, since over similar blinded listening sessions I have been able after a few tracks to clearly discern between the HTC One and i9505 and also between the Note 2 and iPhone 4. Worth mentioning that these sorts of comparitive tests are really only valid when blinded.

Having said that the i9505 does have a major, major, problem with IEMs that have input impedances less than 16ohm in the bass frequencies - it causes crackling that makes the i9505 utterly unlistenable. Unfortunately this issue will disproportionately effect the audiophile part of the market who cares the most, since most of the best IEMs are balanced armature IEMs which tend to have quite a lot of variance along the frequency spectrum and exhibit the crackling issue. More details with measurement data illustrating the problem here.

For most users that problem won't manifest, so for 'normal' listeners it isn't necessarily a relevant concern and in that case you come back to my original point that the differences in the quality of the sound are so tiny as to be irrelevant.

I'm inclined to think the poster above thinks the i9500 has better audio on the basis of it having a Wolfson DAC, but the presence of a (possibly) better DAC does nothing whatsoever to ensure better audio output as the implementation of said DAC at the hardware and software levels is at least as important as the DAC itself. There is at least one problem known with the software implementation in the i9500 already in that it upsamples all sound to 48Hz, which does a fair amount of damage to its fidelity (source for that is Supercurio). Unfortunately the Wolfson name has become a trendy thing for consumers who appreciate sound, but don't understand very much, to latch on to.

Even the old VF android 2.1 phone for $150 sounded great on a bluetooth headset......but the wired headset with it was like listening to music while someone was shaking a bag of small stones.

have you heard this crackling on your gear? which gear will and won't crackle? will it do it on a Senn HD600 (its impedance at 1kHz is 300Ohm but I have no idea what impedance is the bass frequencies)?

Yes, but only with IEMs (ranging in price from something like $50 up to $500). The HD600 will be fine, they aren't subject to the same variance in impedance over the frequency range as they are dynamic driver headphones, its really only BA IEMs that unmask the problem. If you're looking for proper headphone measurements Inner Fidelity and Goldenears do a lot including impedance from 0-20,000Hz, and unlike GSMArena have technically sound methodologies.
