Its just a flash for the /system partition so leaves existing modem, kernel and bootloader intact.

I saw that and was tempted, but there were a couple of things that put me off:

(1) Not including the kernel in the flash. The big reason for wanting 2.3.4 is for the battery usage fix, and the kernel is key to this.

(2) Flashing to any other ROM (stock ROMs in particular) after using VillainROM might require a wipe of your user data, otherwise you might get a boot loop. No ROM should be futzing around with your data to the point where it causes major issues with a stock ROM.

I think I'll stick to stock for now. Hell, I might even look at making my own ROM, assuming I get the time to work on it.

Wiped cache and dalvik and installed1.5 but Google maps force closes...

SamFirmware have contacts inside Samsung, and are able to get hold of firmware builds that aren't supposed to be for public use. The new 2.3.4 firmware that's out (XXKG1) is most likely a release candidate of some sort, to be given out to a limited audience for testing, and will be very close to the final official release.

thanks. can you tell me if using titanium backup to backup apps onto the inbuilt "SD card" portion of space is going to work?

WARNING! The new ROM appears to wipe all of your data, so unless you've got a backup you'll need to start from scratch.

More annoyingly, you don't get a chance to set up WiFi before the phone setup process attempts to restore your settings from your Google account. It wants to do it over 3G. And the Kies backup I did before the update is refusing to restore some items.

So beware - you may have some... fun... installing this ROM.

I don't have Titanium Backup, so I can't say whether it will restore your apps. I assume it should. The SD card doesn't seem to be affected by the update, just the /data partition (used for apps, settings, etc).

Edit: For safety, you may want to find out where Titanium creates its backup files, and copy the backups off your phone before starting the update. That way if something does wipe the internal SD card, you have a backup to restore from.

ok this is the dumbest question i've got: in an iphone the app store "remembers" all the apps you've bought and you can get another copy for free ...

if i bought titanium backup (the only thing i bought) and it gets wiped out when i eventually install a new ROM that wipes everything ... will i get the program for free from the market?

Yes, you'll get all of your apps back. It'd be pretty crappy if you had to pay for all of those apps again!

The SamFirmware guides actually recommend that you do a factory restore.
After confirming you've got the correct firmware *#1234#
Dial *2767*3855#

MAKE SURE YOU'VE COPIED YOUR INT SD TO YOUR COMPUTER BECAUSE IT COMPLETELY WIPES IT ALL BUT A FEW FOLDERS

I've started doing this the last few times no matter what type of Rom I'm flashing.

If you remove your SIM card before you begin the flash, when the phone boots up you'll be first asked if you want to connect to Wifi. It's only because you've got the SIM in it default to mobile data as you've not yet completed the start up wizard to enter the Wifi password.

Titanium backup is always my preferred method of restoring. I've got the paid version and it's well worth the few dollars to have it automatically restore the apps you've backed up.

You are quite correct nzgeek. The Titanium Backup folder is on the INT SD. You want to copy this (and any other folders/files) onto your computer, then copy them back when you've flashed the new rom.

Yes. Your purchase is linked to your Google account so you'll always have access to any paid application, even if the application has been wiped from your phone.

Done it many many times :) When you go to the Market and select "My Apps", the list will include your default Google apps like Gmail, and any paid application. So even if you don't restore using Titanium Backup of the like, you'll be able to restore your paid for apps from the Market.

I haven't tried that. I used Odin. Easy, quick, painless. It would be good to know if Kernel Flasher works for SGSII. I've not tried it. Probably the answer is in Google somewhere :)

I know the CWM kernel flash works as I did it for KF4, after rooting, then flashing the stock XEU KF4 kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle

I might just use Odin to flash the whole rom, got titanium backup pro anyway :D

So per nzgeek's post the process is:
Flash 2.3.4 rom with Odin
CF-root kernel with Odin, presumably any kernel version?
Use CWM to flash the 2.3.4 kernel?

Is that correct?
