wendonside:

Well yes I am actually. I don't quite understand what people are complaining about...

If you go to the $80/month plans the Galaxy is $599 and the iPhone is $699.

At the end of the day, as Linuxluver says, it's just business. Take it or leave it I guess. Or am I just missing the point completely?

The price without contract for VF's top of the line iP4 is $1300. The price without contract for VF's top of the line i9000 is $1000.

That's $300 more for the iP4. Even if VF could be arsed selling the 16GB version of the Galaxy S, that would still be a $200 difference in RRP.

Based on your figures, (haven't checked)...
Phone RRP price less contract price = subsidy. iP4 subsidy = $600. Galaxy S subsidy = $400, $200 less subsidy than the iPhone over the same contract.

Right now then, we're being suckered by $200 top phone to top phone, and even if VF sold the 16GB i9000, the VF 'tax' would still be $100. If you're content with that, then that's your privilege. I think it's a rort and I will, as you suggest, take my business elsewhere.

To each his own...

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

I see some have been rather disingenuous by using the iphone 32GB for comparing against the Galaxy and fail to show the subsidised value for each. I have to wonder why.

The point I've been trying to make is that a subsidy is supposed to be an incentive to make the customer overlook being locked in for 24 months. And let's face it, 24 months is almost a lifetime when speaking in terms of technology.

For me, Vodafone missed the boat. They could have converted me from a $6 / month prepaid customer to a contract customer spending $50 / month had they given a similar subsidy on the Galaxy. Instead, my $$$ are now most probably going to go to a website based overseas to purchase this phone - we all end up losing when our $$$ go to offshore businesses. Local businesses have to actually want our business to get it!

I have 10 months left to run on a 2 year contract. The phone I got cheap ($519 / HTC Magic) in July '09, I sold in April, '10. That's *my* part of the "subsidy" as I got $99 less for it (via TradeMe) than I paid. So in the end, that's what the phone actually cost me: $99.

But I'm on this contract...and it's OK....but I don't use the minutes and the $40 / month contract ("Smart 1" now) would give me the same - effective - amount of data (3GB) that I'm getting with the Smart 3. So I'm a tiny bit sad about that....but not much.

Come July, I'll probably go month-by-month on a plan for a bit....and see what happens. If there is a good deal, I'll go for it. But I think I'm paying full price for phones from now on. It looks to be cheaper.....though it pays to remember if you time the market right, you can get back most of what you paid for your phone...and thereby create your own "subsidy". Just make sure you buy a good phone that is sought after. Others don't hold their value  as well.

As far as I know, you can change down a plan after 6 months. It used to be like that for the iPhone plans anyway, so might be worth looking into.

Vodafone is far from a local business. Apart from employing locals, it's by large still a global company. Their pricing policies and core values will be driven by a head office overseas. Sure the local responsiveness is something they look at. I mean they're not dumb and can see that they have half of the NZ market. The other half of the market is with Telecom (this is of course before 2Degrees came on the scene) who let's face are not any better at phone subsidies or termination rates.

If you're talking about supporting a local business, imo 2Degrees is the way to go. But even then you're looking at the company which has a plenty of international interest (overseas investors). However 2Degrees gives us something that some of the overseas markets have plenty of - competition. The competition is the only reason you see better deals on mobile subsidies and termination rates in other countries. Mobile carriers don't charge less for their phone termination rates and give better deals on the handsets out of kindness of their heart. They're competing with other carriers. But in NZ the termination rates are now getting regulated by government, because we've been getting ripped off for so long. Hopefully with more competition and the government intervention (which under normal circumstances I would be against) we'll see better rates and mobile subsidies. Simple economics really.

well I got so peeved about all this talk, I just went and purchased one, 16gb, walked into a shop on Aucklands north shore,( commonly found on pricespy/priceme)  $830 cash, They also gave me a wireless router for $40.00. I then bought a $150 2 degrees 10GB data pack and sim.

I (er, my passenger) rang 2degrees whilst on the road and they (spoke English even) and txt'd the settings to me
Great phone, amazing screen and frankly I feel like I've been "looked after" , by a single retailer, who I will go back to.

wha? that sounds so cheap $830, cheapest on pricespy $1000 for 16gb, also wireless router for $40 sounds good. Did you have to sleep with the shop assistant to get that deal?

Before recommending this to another person I checked out some of their customer feedback, not the best , but they were good to me.

Their website has dropped their price from $920 to $899 (I have been monitoring it) so $830 is indeed a good discount for cash.  The fact that VF have it for $999 may be driving the parallel imported price down.
