hadenkose: Thanks for the heads up! I've got my bro in Aussie to buy the 7 Pro and he's now gonna try for the price match. If it all works, then it will end up being a great deal!

Awesome. Aussie Jbhifi and Officeworks both have the 128gb pro for AUD$1037, so Google should match that as well as giving the $300 credit. Google definitely do price matching, but it's a pain that they only do the refund method rather than altering the price up front.

This is awesome. I've instructed my father to march into JB Hifi today and buy me a P7 Pro so he can bring it over at Christmas.  $260 off!

Does anyone know if P7P VoLTE works on Skinny, or only Spark proper?

Agree with previous, would love to know whether it's only spark or if skinny works too. Personally am on skinny and would give my left nut for a fully working P7

Bought my wife a pixel 7 from Australia. She's on skinny.
Is the only way to check this to go to *#*#4636#*#* -> IMS Service Status
This message box comes up when she tries to do this

I'll get her to call me and take a screenshot to see if it kicks her out of 4g.

Scratch that, looks like its not supported on skinny.

Managed to get into the menu and this was shown

Says spark for the network but doesn't support volte.

And then also tried a call on 4g and it dropped immediately to hsdpa

How is everybody's experience with their Pixel 7? Been deciding between it and the S21 FE. Any notable downsides from an import phone?

Thanks for that.

I guess if Spark 3G is eventually switched off before Google pull their heads in, I will just have to switch from Skinny to Spark.

Just got an S21 FE from Noel Leeming for $689 by doing a price match. Worth it

Bit of an underwhelming Black Friday sale on the Google Store Australia. Everyone else gets a cash discount, whereas the Aussie Store gives you a $300 store credit for the 7 Pro and $250 for the 7. They also state that you need an Aussie google pay account to redeem the store credit (which also might arrive up to 4 weeks after the item you purchased has been dispatched)!

Certainly a bit underwhelming - useful if you were in Australia of course, as Google Store does do a price match (more of a price refund thing as you first buy it and then get the difference refunded after much waiting around on their chat line). That means you could get the $250 credit for the 7 as well as getting them to match the JBHIFI AUD$850 or Office Works AUD$837 price.

Obviously mostly useful if you had Google Store credit credit and an Australian friend :)

EDIT: Just checked, and someone on OzBargain has confirmed with Google Support that they will honour the black friday credit on top of refunding the price difference, so this would definitely be the best Australian deal at the moment.

Cheers for confirming this. Ended up picking up a P7 for the wife and P7P for myself and burnt the $550 credit on accessories etc. Google took a little prodding to get the price match refund value correct but eventually got there in the end.

Lucky their support chat is quick! Match JB @ $837 and $1187 respectively, so essentially free cases etc.

Not bad. Looks like some top options I can find so far are
~$700 s21 FE
~*$900 P7 from Australia *
~$1100 S22
~$1300 s23 Feb next year

I want the p7 but this thread seems pretty conclusive that for Vodafone the answer is no. Skinny seems questionable too

For clarity on Skinny VoLTE, see ShaneKNZ's reply from the Pixel VoLTE thread.

Not currently supported, at least a few months away.

Just so I can understand what it means I'm giving up, using a pixel phone on anything other than spark:

No 5g but 4g will work? Not really a problem given that 4g is more than fast enough to stream video and if I'm going to download anything big I'll be on wifi.

No VoLTE -but this just means I can't make a voice call and still keep 4g connectivity? Again no big deal, I barely call let alone call and try to surf the web at the same time.

But that's really about it? Or am I missing something

@SomePostman A Pixel 7 will work just fine on any network.  However, when the carriers shutdown their 3G networks (i.e. become 4G only) you need a handset to support VoLTE to be able to make and recieve calls to your normal number.

The date for Vodafone to shutoff their 3G is the 31st August, 2024 a little less than 2 years away.  I bet that date gets pushed out.

Even if it doesn't, by then one hopes that Google will have rolled out VoLTE to all carriers that support it in NZ.  If not you will have to either a) Buy a new handset or b) Migrate to Spark

I'm on Vodafone at the moment, I'm still getting a P7 Pro.  If it's still a major major problem in 2 years time I'll buy a new phone, or just move carrier! Or just use a SIP provider and forward my calls to it etc.

If this is the only phone you'll be able to afford in the next 5 years then it's worth worrying obsessively about, otherwise meh (IMHO, of course)

Oh yes and you won't get any working 5G.  When someone explains to me an actual use case for 5G instead of 4G that isn't marking w-hank I'll worry about it.

No VoLTE means the phone has to switch down to 3G to place and receive phone calls. Not really a big deal right now, but Vodafone is switching off 3G in 2024 and 2G by the end of 2025. When that happens Pixel phones won't be able to place or receive phone calls on Vodafone at all - you'd have to switch to Spark or 2degrees for your phone to continue working as a phone.

2degrees hasn't said if or when they'll switch off 3G from what I can tell but I assume they'll follow Spark and Vodafone sooner or later and turn it off too. They've already switched off their 2G network (back in 2018).

So in the medium to long term, VoLTE will be required for voice calls regardless of network. That will leave Spark as the only option for Pixel phones - assuming Google doesn't suddenly hire some competence or drop Spark from their network whitelist.
