It's been two years with the HTC Desire and I am looking at getting a Samsung Galaxy S3.

I have previously used Mobicity without incurring any GST or Duty my research suggests that they use FedEx, which pretty much guarantees having to pony up for additional taxes and duty. However I remember them using PBT [?] with my Tablet and it just came to my work without any customs hold up.

Was wondering what people's recent experiences have been like if any. With any supplier.

If it's a 50/50 thing I think I might play it safe and pay an extra $50 to source it locally.

Just wanted to get some other input

Treat the $50 as an enhanced CGA warranty plan...

It is the exception rather than the norm to avoid paying GST. Sometimes you get lucky, most of the time you don't.

How much is the phone from overseas? They've been under $900 at a number of retailers lately.

einfo dot co dot nz has a basic SG3 Pebble blue with 16GB for $733.00 + ($10.00 pp as I remember)

At least with NZ you're covered by the consumer thjingy or whatever it's called.

Mind going from a HTC Desire to a SGSIII is an interesting step as it's a 1cm x 1.7cn size increase.

I'd advise you have a play with a friends SGS3 or one in a mobile phone shop, they're 'really' big.

Just my option as millions of people disagree with me.

Kiwi1971:  Unless you are personally recommending the one you mentioned.

No, no no, I recommend nothing. :-)

Thanks, I found a shop in Auckland with a bricks and mortar store that will do the 16GB Blue for $733.98 + $7 within island delivery so that is pretty much the benchmark. Unless you are personally recommending the one you mentioned.

So a $48 saving if I wasn't to get charged GST etc.  I will probably bite the bullet and go for one of those.

Sans GST, Duty, and Customs charge of $38 It's  $669 + 24 delivery. If I get charged all that it gets up to about $835 as GST is also charged on shipping.

I made that exact same jump myself on Friday, Bought myself an S3 to replace my Desire.

Have been loving it so far, Great phone to use all round.

I can certainly recommend it as a great phone to use and would favor it over the competition any day, Although I will admit it can be a little on the difficult side to use one handed at certain times but these are few and far between.

Definitely looking forward to that Jelly Bean update.

As for taxes I would definitely go for the locally sourcing option, Especially with the current prices they are available for, Even if you do go with a local parallel imported one.

Looks like a pretty good deal to me, I paid $735 at Expert Infotech (Einfo) on Friday last week myself, They where on Sale at $858 @ Dick Smith at the time which was tempting but not worth the extra $120 to me although $799 might have been more acceptable.

Is this for the 16GB?  I know I can get that for $740.98 delivered from the shop I mentioned in Auckland.
If it's the 32GB I am going to plump for that here in Wellington.

Is that one for $740.98 parallel imported? I would think it would be for that price. I have seen what the cost on these is for the big box retailers, and it is more than that. $799 for a Telecom/2Deg or Voda one from the warehouse gives you good warranty peace of mind.

I am not actually sure, they do have a shop in Auckland but just the one so chances are they parallel import.

I've ordered mine now from Einfotech and even with courier and 2% CC surcharge it came in at $760 for the 16GB Pebble blue.
I hadn't considered the parallel importing v local firmware issue but my Desire was PI and I had no real issues with it. But I did root it pretty much straight away and lose all the Chinese-centric apps.

That's a good price. Can't believe someone would spend a grand plus on an iPhone.....Embarassed
